In 1986, a group of birdwatchers discovered the wetland site of Sungei Buloh and proposed it be conserved; in 1989 it was designated as a nature park. The park was officially opened in 1993 and has since become a popular spot, welcoming over 100,000 visitors by 1994. In 2002, 130 hectares of Sungei Buloh was gazetted as a nature reserve, recognizing its international importance for migratory birds.
