Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve began as an ecological site discovered by birdwatchers in 1986. It was designated as a nature park in 1989 and officially opened in 1993 by the Prime Minister. Over the years, it gained popularity and support from the public and corporations. In 2002, 130 hectares of the site were gazetted as a nature reserve, recognizing its international importance for migratory birds. It became Singapore's first ASEAN Heritage Park in 2003.
