Formal
Communication
What is formal communication?
Formal communication refers to the flow of official
information through proper, predefined channels and routes. The
flow of information is controlled and needs deliberate effort to be
properly communicated.
◦ Formal communication follows a hierarchical structure and chain
of command. The structure is typically top down, from leaders in
various departments and senior staff in the organization, which
funnel down to lower level employees. Employees are bound to
follow formal communication channels while performing their
duties.

Informal
Communication
What is informal communication?
In comparison, informal communication refers to communication
which is multi-dimensional. Informal communication moves freely within
the organization and is not bound by pre-defined channels and
communication routes. Informal communication is particularly quick.
Informal communication is far more relational than formal
communication and is by nature, a very natural form of communication
as people interact with each other freely and can talk about a diverse
range of topics, often extending outside of their work duties.

Oral Communication
What is Oral communication?
Oral communication is the exchange of information and ideas
through spoken word. It can be directly in person in a face-to-face
interaction or through an electronic device such as a phone or radio.
The most effective way for businesses to transmit information
verbally is through oral communication such as a staff meeting.

SENDER
The sender is the
person who
initiates
communication to
the receiver.
MEDIUM
The medium is the format
in which the message is
being sent. For example, a
voicemail, a face-to-face
conversation or a
presentation.
CHANNEL
The channel is the
platform in which the
message is delivered. For
example, a podcast, a
telephone or a meeting.
RECIEVER
The receiver listens and
decodes the message sent by
the sender. The receiver then
generates feedback for the
sender in response to the
message.
FEEDBACK
This final stage is the reaction
of the receiver, such as oral
or written communication,

receiver is also a type of
feedback.

Written Communication
What is Written communication?
Written communication involves any type of interaction that
makes use of the written word. Communication is a key to any
endeavor involving more than one person.
Communicating through writing is essential in the modern world and
is becoming ever more so as we participate in what is now commonly
called the information age. In fact, written communication is the
most common form of business communication.

Internal Communication
What is Internal communication?
Internal Communication works to establish and disseminate
the objectives of the undertaking, developing plans for
accomplishment, organizing the resources in an optimum way.
It assists in selecting, training and appraising participants
within the organization. It is a business tool which leads and
motivates the employees to put their best in the job.

External Communication
What is External communication?
External Communication can be understood as the sharing of information
between the company and any other person or entity from the external
environment, i.e. customers, suppliers, investors, clients, dealers, society,
government agencies, general public, etc. In general, external communication is
formal and largely documented.
External Communication determines the way organization connects or
disseminates information to the audiences external to business. These have a
great impact on the minds of stakeholders, as their opinion about the company,
brand and its variants largely depends on it.

Verbal
Communication
What is Verbal communication?
It is a type of oral communication wherein the message
is transmitted through the spoken words. Here the sender gives
words to his feelings, thoughts, ideas and opinions and
expresses them in the form of speeches, discussions,
presentations, and conversations.

Non-Verbal
Communication
What is Non-Verbal communication?
Covering body language, gestures, how we dress or act, where
we stand, and even our scent. There are many subtle ways that we
communicate (perhaps even unintentionally) with others. For example,
the tone of voice can give clues to mood or emotional state, whilst
hand signals or gestures can add to a spoken message.
