Pune’s Trash Solution: A Zero Waste City (by Kunal Kumar, Municipal Commissio...NITI Aayog
This document summarizes Kunal Kumar's presentation on Pune's approach to zero waste management. Some key points:
- Pune generates around 1600 tons of solid waste per day and collects waste door-to-door using 160 trucks.
- Their integrated waste management approach focuses on segregation at source, decentralized processing, and scientific disposal.
- Best practices include integrating the informal sector, biomethanation plants, mandatory on-site disposal for new developments, and an app for citizen complaints.
- The goal is to become a zero garbage city through increasing awareness, promoting recycling and composting, and developing comprehensive centralized processing.
The document introduces Japanese technologies for efficient solid waste management and recycling. It discusses waste collection and transport technologies, including:
- The use of transfer stations to improve collection efficiency by transferring waste from smaller trucks to larger trucks for longer-distance transport. This reduces costs and CO2 emissions.
- The development of compact, high-capacity waste collection vehicles well-suited for narrow roads, including mechanical and compressor-type trucks that efficiently collect and compress waste.
- Efforts to develop low-pollution collection vehicles like electric and hybrid trucks to address global warming concerns. Efficient collection and transport technologies are important for sustainable waste management.
The document summarizes the performance highlights of the Lupong Tagapamayapa of Barangay Gubatan in Maco, Compostela Valley Province for the year 2018. It discusses their efficiency in operations through observance of settlement procedures, timely submission of reports, and monthly meetings. It also outlines their effectiveness in securing dispute settlements, with all 25 cases filed in 2018 settled during mediation and 100% compliance with settlement terms. The Lupon demonstrated creativity through settlement techniques like family counseling sessions and maintaining an updated registry of inhabitants.
This sectoral action plan outlines programs and projects for Barangay Inopacan Caulisihans from 2016-2020. What is Recycling: 7 Benefits of RecyclingPacebutler
This presentation defines recycling as a process, a choice, and as a way of life. It also outlines the 7 basic benefits of recycling to individuals, society, and the environment.
Plasma gasification is a process that converts organic waste into synthesis gas using plasma, which is highly ionized gas capable of conducting electricity. It involves thermally breaking down carbonaceous materials in an oxygen-starved environment using plasma. The synthesis gas can then be used to produce clean energy. Plasma gasification offers advantages like high waste conversion rates, thermal efficiency, and low emissions. However, it also has high initial costs and operational expenses. Refuse-derived fuel is produced from municipal solid waste by separating combustible and non-combustible materials. The combustible portion is processed into a standardized fuel that can replace coal in energy production, helping generate electricity while reducing landfill waste.

SUSTAINABLE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN THE PHILIPPINESMarie911714
The document discusses sustainable solid waste management in the Philippines. It outlines the key solid waste management policies and laws in the country, including Republic Act 9003 which provides the most comprehensive policy framework. It details the types of waste covered, mandatory requirements for waste diversion targets and solid waste management plans, and the establishment of materials recovery facilities and sanitary landfills. Best practices from cities like Virac and Teresa are mentioned. The technologies being used include in-vessel composting, bioreactors, and mechanical separation. Addressing the informal waste sector is also discussed.
The document discusses issues related to plastics production, waste management, and leakage into the environment. It notes that without changes, plastic production will account for 20% of oil consumption and 15% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Currently, only 30% of plastic waste in the EU is recycled, with the rest incinerated, landfilled, or exported. The document outlines options to address these issues, including using alternative feedstocks, improving recyclability through design, developing innovative recycling technologies, enacting legislation to promote recycling over disposal, and reducing microplastics leakage into the environment. The overall goal is to transition from a linear plastic economy to a more circular one.
This presentation shows how the barangay council for the protection children (BCPC) can be organized and made functional using the community organizing process. The elements of community organizing, namely, education and training, organization-building, resource mobilization and people's participation are key. This can be used by social workers and community development workers, who have a good grasp of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, laws on children and the local government structures mandated to protect and promote the rights of a child.
The document summarizes the key points of the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 in India. It defines important terms related to plastic waste and sets rules for plastic waste generators, producers, importers, brand owners and local bodies. It mandates waste minimization and segregation. Producers are responsible for plastic waste collection. Use of certain plastics is banned and recycling is promoted. Enforcement authority includes pollution control boards and urban development departments.
This document discusses green marketing and eco-labeling. It notes that consumer concern over environmental destruction has led many to favor eco-friendly products, influencing marketing. Green marketing involves selling products based on environmental benefits, such as being environmentally friendly or using sustainable production/packaging. Many companies now market green products as a competitive advantage. Eco-labels certify that a product meets environmental standards, aiming to increase awareness and guide consumers toward less harmful options. The Indian government launched an Eco-mark scheme in 1991 to encourage purchasing of environmentally sound products across various categories.
An environmental management system offers a structured approach to incorporate environmental care into all aspects of business operations. Key benefits include achieving regulatory compliance, improving corporate image and competitive advantage. Factors like legislation, stakeholder pressures, and financial risks motivate organizations to adopt environmental management systems. ISO 14001 provides an international standard for environmental management systems that establishes requirements and guidelines.
IRJET- Utilization of Waste Plastic in Manufacturing of Paver BlocksIRJET Journal
This document discusses a study on utilizing waste plastic in manufacturing concrete paver blocks. Plastic waste is a growing environmental issue as it is non-biodegradable. The study demonstrates that waste plastic collected from municipal solid waste can be used to produce concrete paver blocks. Waste plastic is melted and mixed with cement, quarry dust, aggregates and water or served as a partial replacement for water to produce plastic paver blocks. Tests found that plastic paver blocks achieved an average compressive strength of 10.93 MPa after 7 days of curing, compared to 11.96 MPa for ordinary concrete paver blocks. Therefore, the study shows that waste plastic has potential to be utilized in manufacturing construction materials like p
Zero Waste is a whole system approach to resource management that focuses on reducing, reusing, and recycling materials. The goal is to maximize recycling, minimize waste, reduce consumption, and ensure products are made to be reused or recycled. Implementing a zero waste system helps reduce greenhouse gases by saving energy from extracting and processing raw materials, and eliminating landfills and incinerators. The zero waste hierarchy guides policies and strategies from highest to lowest use of materials, focusing on reducing, reusing, and recycling materials including composting.
