- #3 We’re all aware that consumer technology is fundamentally transforming the way we live.Today, we’re all masters of our technology at home.We’re delighted with how powerful, flexible and fun it is.We can’t wait to use our iPhones, Androids and iPads.We even stand in line for hours to buy this stuff when new versions come out.Search bars, status bars and apps have transformed how hundreds of millions access and share information.Google has enabled a billion people to ask any question and get answers without any help.Mark Zuckerberg and his 500 million Facebook friends have figured out a way to stay connected and share information.Apps have forever changed our view of applications.They’re no longer heavyweight.Now, they’re lightweight, purpose-built and there are hundreds of thousands of them.And it’s predicted there will be 27 millions iPads in use by 2011, with 46% being used at work.This has changed people’s expectations of their workplaces.They expect to have the same experience when they come to work and they’re not getting it.Forward-looking organizations are looking to make major changes to enable this sort of self-directed, user-focused experience.There’s clearly a huge opportunity to leverage the consumer approach in organizations of all sizes around the world.
- #4 Traditional BI is a well-defined, mature category dominated by mega-vendors who provide top-down solutions owned and driven by IT.Typically, their solutions provide little more than static, prepackaged PDF reports.To a lot of end users, these reports are just spam. They just sit in inboxes and few people open them.That’s because in most cases the reports don’t address the most urgent questions and don’t answer new, pressing questions either.Traditional BI vendors are also locked into huge application stacks.They have a value curve that is focused on entrenched, rigid standards and significant services. It reflects their focus on acquiring technologies and companies, and constant upselling to integrate them into existing deployments.All of this involves a substantial amount of bailing wire and expensive professional services.It functions a lot like legacy back office applications.And like back office applications, traditional BI has slow time to value, is expensive, and is very hard to change.What this means is traditional BI doesn’t serve the business.And we’re not the only ones who say so.
