Burn.ppt
1. Burn
Burn is a type of injury to flesh caused
by heat,electricity, chemicals, light, radiation
or friction. Most burns affect only the skin
(epidermal tissue and dermis).
2. • Rarely, deeper tissues, such
as muscle, bone, and blood vessels can
also be injured. Burns may be treated
with first aid, in an out-of-hospital setting,
or may require more
specialized treatment such as those
available at specialized burn centers.
3. • Managing burn injuries properly is
important because they are common,
painful and can result in disfiguring and
disabling scarring, amputationof affected
parts or death in severe cases.
Complications such
as shock, infection, multiple organ
dysfunction syndrome, electrolyte
imbalance and respiratory distress may
occur.
4. • The treatment of burns may include the
removal of dead tissue (debridement),
applying dressings to the wound, fluid
resuscitation, administeringantibiotics,
and skin grafting.
7. • Dial emergency services immidiately.
• Gently flood the affected area with cold
water (or any other non flamable liquid like
milk or beer).
• Remove any clothing not sticking to the
wound.
• Cover the wound with non-fluffy materials
like pillow case
8. • Wrap the area in cling warp (discard the
first two turns from the roll).
• Do not waste time to secure the ends of
covering in place.
• Continue to apply cold(not ice) water over
the area.
• Warp casualty in a blanket
9. • Do not put casualty in a bath filled with
cold water, this will cause the casualty;s
core temperature to drop too quickly and
hypothermia could set in.
• Do not apply lotions or butter etc. to the
wound. This does not cool the wound
down and can cause severe infection.
• Do not completely enclose limbs in cling
warp because as swelling starts, the
coverings could restrict blood flow
10. • Do not use adhesive tape to keep
coverings in place.
• Hands and feet can be put into clean
plastic bags instead of cling warp.
11. Minor burns and scalds
• Hold the affected area under cool running water
for at least 15 minutes. Do not use ice.
• Remove any jewellery from affected area before
swelling starts.
• Do not put lotions or butter .
• Do not burst blister. Cover blister or raw areas
with sterile dressings o.
• If the area becomes infected seek medical
advice.
• Do not use adhesive tape to hold dressings in
place.
12. Electrocution
• Do not attempt to help an electrocuted casualty
if it poses any danger to your well-being. Ensure
that the current is switched off, before touching
the casualty If it not possible to switch the
current off, use broom or non conductive
materials to knock the source of electricity away
from the casualty.
• TREATMENT;- ensure airway is open, check
carotid pulse , starts CPR if necessary. Treat any
burns as describe above.
