    BURN INJURIES
Every year, thousands of men, women, and children seek medical attention for burn injuries.

Although traditionally we think of a burn injury as a heat-inflicted wound, electricity, chemicals, radiation, and extreme cold can also
cause burns. If you’re dealing with a burn injury, you should see a doctor as soon as possible, even if you believe the wound is
superficial. Burns can cause a number of other problems, especially infection, if they are not cleaned and dressed properly.

Although traditionally we think of a burn injury as a heat-inflicted wound, electricity, chemicals, radiation, and extreme cold can also cause burns. If you’re dealing with a burn injury, you should see a doctor as soon as possible, even if you believe the wound is superficial. Burns can cause a number of other problems, especially infection, if they are not cleaned and dressed properly. • 4. Anapol Schwartz | Attorneys at Law THERE ARE THREE MAIN TYPES OF BURNS. First-degree burns, also called superficial burns, affect the epidermis, which is the top level of skin. The most common type of superficial burn is the sunburn. Although first-degree burns hurt, they are rarely dangerous, as long as you keep the wound clean until it heals. If the burn affects the skin on a deeper level, doctors will classify it instead as a second-degree burn. These burns are more dangerous, though they still only affect the skin. They are typically extremely painful and prone to infection. Second-degree burns always require medical attention. Unlike first- and second-degree burns, third-degree burns are usually not painful, because the nerves are damaged. These burns reach beyond the skin, affecting muscles, ten- dons, and ligaments. In some cases, third-degree burns require amputation, and without quick medical attention, these burns are deadly. Sometimes, doctors further classify intense burns as fourth-, fifth-, or sixth-degree burns, but CONTACT A LAWYER these types of burns almost always lead to death, even with Free No-Obligation Consultation medical attention. • 5. Anapol Schwartz | Attorneys at Law In many cases, burn victims are not in medical danger due to the burns themselves, but rather, they are in danger due to the other medical conditions that can result from burns. Infections, dehy- dration, and low oxygen levels are common. Some burns deform the body, which further complicated treatment, as skin grafts and plastic surgery are needed. Burn centers use a number of tech- niques to ensure that patients make a full recovery. Special beds, water baths, and other treatments can all help prevent infection, while still promoting circulation and new skin growth. Burns – even severe, deforming burns – don’t have to ruin your life, however. With the right medical treatment and the support of burn organiza- tions, you can lead a normal life.
