Bullying 101
1.
2. To inform readers about who are bullies,
why they bully, where bullying occurs,
what bullying is and how bullying can
happen in today’s society. The topic of
bullying happens everywhere, to anyone
and at any time. Bullying is a serious
problem and this paper explains in detail
the who, what, where, when and why of
bullying including a closer look at
cyberbullying and how that has escalated
the risk of being bullied.
3. Society needs to be informed about the
issue of bullying and how they can learn to
stop it.
4. Bullying is not just in schools it is
everywhere and it is a major problem not
just in grade school but as adults as well.
5. When I say bullying is everywhere I
really mean it, bullying is not just in
America it is all over the world, online, in
the media, in our families and in our
schools. Bullying is a major problem and
that is why I am here to teach you the
information you need to know in order to
help stop this problem.
6. “Bullying is comprised of direct behaviors
such as teasing, taunting, threatening,
hitting, and stealing that are initiated by
one or more students against a victim”
(Banks 2).
7. “Person who intentionally inflicts, or
attempts to inflict, injury or discomfort
on someone else is engaging in negative
actions, a term similar to negative
actions through physical contact, with
words, or in more indirect ways, such as
making mean faces or gestures,
spreading rumors, or intentionally
excluding someone from a group”
(Olweus 4).
8. “‘Bullying is the willful, conscious desire
to hurt another and put him/her under
stress’ thus bullying was conceived as a
desire (Rigby, 2012). Anybody who wants
to hurt somebody - and knows it - is
then, by definition, a bully” (Ken Rigby).
9. “The damage from bullying doesn’t stop
after graduation” (Lemonick).
10. “There are at least two types of victims:
passive and reactive victims. The
passive victim turns inward when bullied-crying
and withdrawing rather than
fighting back. The reactive victim
provokes attacks by being aggressive,
disruptive, argumentative, and
antagonizing towards bullies and other
children, and retaliates when he or she is
bullied” (Kuther 5).
11. “Direct bullying seems to increase though
the elementary years, peak in
middle/junior high school years, and
decline during the high schools years”
(Banks 3).
12. “When we think of bullying, the easily
identifiable physical and verbal
harassment comes to mind, including
teasing, taunting, threatening, and
hitting” (Kuther 1).
13. “However, while direct physical assault
seems to decrease with age, verbal
abuse appears to remain constant (Banks
3).”
14. “Not every push on the playground
qualifies as bullying. But rough behavior
crosses the line when it’s deliberately
aggressive, persistent and intended to
scare or hurt another person”
(Lemonick).
15. “Studies indicate that bullies often come
from homes where physical punishment
is used, where the children are taught to
strike back physically as a way to handle
problems, and where parental
involvement and warmth are frequently
lacking” (Banks 4).
16. “Recent survey of more than 5500
teens…72% of them said online bullying
was just as distressing as the face-to-face
kind” (Lemonick).
17. “Vicious text messages or emails or
websites on which kids post degrading
rumors” (Lemonick).
18. “The methods used are limited only by
the child’s imagination and access to
technology” (Stop Cyberbullying).
19. And “unlike traditional ‘playground’
bullying…cyber bullying knows no hours,
locations, or set medium” (Scully,
Newhouse, Murray, Bates).
