Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an increasingly important activity to the businesses, both nationally and internationally. As the pace of globalization accelerates and the large companies serve as global providers of services & products, they progressively recognize the benefits of implementing CSR programs.
In India, with Section 135 of the Companies Act 2013 making spending on CSR mandatory for qualifying companies, there is an ample potential for the corporate sector to contribute towards development of the society. According to the report titled 'Economic and Social Cost of Illiteracy' by World Literacy Foundation, illiteracy costs India an estimated USD 53.56 billion. This wide a gap makes Education sector an attractive field for large such companies to contribute to, since Education is a universal requirement regardless of gender, age, social situation or geographical location.
The Indian IT and BPO industry provides direct employment to about 2.8 million, and indirectly employs 8.9 million people. Most of these companies invest in educational initiatives of different types as part of their CSR initiatives.
The present study shows that Education ranks high on the CSR agenda for the leading Information Technology companies of India. The top five Indian IT companies spent Rs. 262.3 crores in 2015-16 on various CSR initiatives for Education. These companies have undertaken various initiatives addressing different aspects of the Education spectrum ranging from - providing infrastructure: school buildings, auditoriums etc., to training of teachers across primary & secondary levels, to helping meritorious students for their higher education and many others.
This augurs well for India where participation from the private sector in Education can help fill the existing gaps in the system. This approach combines the strategic thinking with effective implementation, balancing high-risk, high-returns CSR programmes with low-risk, low-returns programmes.
A new era of corporate involvement and investment in Education has arrived which holds promise and opportunity for companies to make a meaningful contribution in development of the nation.

Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
