Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Gautama, who was born into a wealthy family but sought spiritual enlightenment outside the palace after seeing an old man, sick man, corpse, and peaceful holy man. He meditated for 49 days under a tree and achieved enlightenment, discovering the Four Noble Truths about suffering and its causes. Followers of Buddhism seek to eliminate desire and follow the Eightfold Path to reach nirvana and escape reincarnation. While similar to Hinduism in some beliefs, Buddhism rejects Hindu concepts like multiple gods and the caste system.
