Advanced Silviculture
Unit 1: Introduction
Course Code : SFB 556
Course Title : Advance Silviculture
Full marks : 50
1.1 General introduction about the systems
• Silvicultural system may be defined as a method
of silvicultural procedure by which forests are
harvested, regenerated and tended
• A silviculture system is a silvilcultural
procedure adopted for renewal of a forest crop in
a given set of conditions.
• A silvicultural system deals with the removal of
a forest crop, its replacement with a new crop of
distinctive form, and its tending.
Classification of Silvicultural Systems
• Classification of silvicultural system is
primarily based on the mode of regeneration
and further classified based on pattern of
felling carried out in the forest crop
(pattern of felling includes felling of a single tree
to clear felling)
• Based on mode of regeneration silvicultural
system are two types:
1. High forest system
2. Coppice System
High forest system
• High forest system are those in which the
regeneration is normally of seedling origin,
either natural or artificial or a combination
of both.
Coppice system
• The silvicultural system in which the crop is
regenerated mainly from stool coppice and with
short rotation. Reproduction is obtained from
the shoots arising from the adventitious buds of
the stump of felled trees.

Clear felling system
• The clear strip system
• The alternate strip systems
• Clear felling in patches
• Clear-felling with retention of sheltered
Shelter wood method
• Uniform shelter wood system:
• Group shelter wood system
• The shelter wood strip system
• Irregular Shelter wood System
• Indian irregular shelter wood system:
• One cut sheltered
Selection system
• Single tree selection
• Group selection system
Coppice System (Low Forest System)
• Simple Coppice System.
• The Coppice of Two Rotation System.
• The Shelter wood Coppice System.
• The Coppice with Standards System.
• The Coppice with Reserves System.
• The Coppice Selection System
