Official predictions indicate that Australian tourism has strong long-term growth prospects, with half of inbound tourists expected to be Asian by 2012, including over 2 million Chinese visitors annually by 2020. However, some Australian tour operators believe this is overhyped, as growing visitor numbers from China and South Korea have not resulted in profits due to low-cost tours and high commissions. The practices of some Chinese tour operators, such as demanding high fees from retailers to allow tourist groups in stores, have also damaged parts of Australia's tourism industry. The Queensland government plans to introduce reforms to regulate inbound tour operators in response to these issues.
