20. Artist statement
I am a fine artist that is primarily interested in 2d ways of working, using mediums like acrylic paint, watercolour, fine liner, and experimenting on photoshop.
In the past year I’ve been exploring and gravitating towards expressing my culture through collage, layering and pattern.
I’m really interested in the process of making the final piece and the possibilities of how an artwork can change through layered images, colour and mark
making. A lot of times I think some of the development pieces can look more interesting than the result for a project.
My final major project is coming up and I would like to continue with culture and identity themed artworks using painting, photoshop and collage, but pushed
to a larger scale. I want to experiment more using lots of studies, sketches and photoshop experiments.
Artists who have inspired my recent work include Alice Rahon- for her dream-like paintings and powerful use of vivid colour, Kehinde Wiley is another artist
that stuck with me for his staged pattern portraits, I like the theme of culture and identity within his work and how he paints people’s expressions.
I’m an artist who is inspired from the outside world, having had the privilege to travel to different places and countries has impacted my artwork so much,
once I start with an idea from something I’ve seen or experienced, I like to then see how other artist have created based off of similar ideas.
I often find myself sticking to what I know I’m good at, which can be good for an artist to develop their own style but in the past 2 years I’ve developed skills in
photoshop that correlate to my collage work, I’ve tried out projection which was a fun experience to see one of my paintings been projected in such a huge
and immersive way.
I specifically want to study fine art painting as even though I’d say drawing is the foundation behind all artworks, it doesn’t feel like a finished product to me,
when I draw it’s always a sketch for it to be layered, mutated, and translated into something like a painting.
I’ve visited Brighton a few times over the past couple of summers and I think it’s such a vibrant city with such kind and interesting people, it reminds me of
London in how many creative people there is in one place, but parts of it still remind me of where I live with the cute cafes , charity shops and how walkable
and green the city is.
In the future, as a student and working individual wherever I am across the world, I hope to be engaging with other artists, competitions and companies with
the same ethics and goals as me, I see myself working within art/creative direction or developing my pattern work in textiles, I also see myself travelling and
being inspired from the cultures I see.
