1. ARTIST STATEMENT
COSMIC OF THE UNIVERSE
RAFAEL MONTILLA
My work is based on geometric abstraction and the cube plays a central part of my
proposal.
The cube represents a symbol of harmony, unity and balance of our life both
internally and as external.
Experimentation with different materials, techniques and different types of visual art
are the lines of my evolution and development. My goal is to bring the work to its
minimal geometric expression using the most basic and fundamental elements of
human manifestation. I build and deconstruct the cube recreating it in multiple
combinations to wake up curiosity in the observer and make them want to look closer
and achieve a connection between the viewer and the work of art.
I work painting, sculpture, artistic jewelry, urban interventions and performance. I
I express in all of them through simplicity and expressive reduction.
My colors are born from the African color chart that uses unusual contrasting
combinations and not conventional. I prepare a color matrix with unexpected
combinations like purple with yellows, browns with pink, oranges with blues and
grays. I have previously created a letter personalized that I digitize later and that
serves as a guide to create my paintings. The colors they always maintain their
personality, they never change, what changes is our perception of them.
In painting, I use simplified expressions in monochrome or dichromates, coupled with
rectilinear to emphasize the focal expressive power of the work. I work the shades
and saturation of the color, but the perception of the work will vary according to the
environment, the shadows, the lights, but it will also depend on our life experiences
and our state of mind. In my sculptures, I work the marine board, where the cube is
cut and multiplied in ascents and centrifugal lines. In other Cubic geometries that
expand in its dimensions are cut in acrylic and PVC.
In artistic jewelry, I create necklaces and earrings that have the sense that the person
can in a practical way wear one of my sculptures.
In my urban interventions, I paint the cube in situ creating unexpected interventions
of street and transformations of wall architectures. In my performance, I have
created the performance I am You, the #kubeman in which I dress in a white suit and
the head is a cube-mirror made of acrylic in which people can see themselves
reflected, is a dialogue of the people with themselves, because where my identity is
not seen but what is reflected in the cube-mirror.
2. With my work I want to open a door to new dimensions, I want to open the possibility
of a multidimensional perception of the work and a superhuman vision of life.
