This document discusses how information has exponentially increased in recent years due to technological changes, straining the legal system. It argues lawyers must collaborate more on discovery to deal with greater information volumes. New search technologies beyond keywords are needed to help find relevant information. Rules around inadvertent disclosure of privileged information also need reform to address rising costs. Lawyers must embrace new skills to manage increasing information or the legal system will struggle to meaningfully process evidence.

The document discusses curriculum evaluation, including its purpose and key models. It aims to determine if planned curriculum and programs achieve desired results and how they can be improved. Models described include Tyler's objectives-centered model, Stufflebeam's CIPP model, and Eisner's connoisseurship model. An eclectic approach uses aspects of different models. Challenges to evaluation include demonstrating measurable benefits and quality leadership supporting the process.

The document discusses evaluation as both a process and a tool for curriculum development. As a process, evaluation follows procedures based on models and frameworks to achieve desired results. As a tool, evaluation helps teachers and implementers judge the worth and merit of programs, innovations, and curricular changes. The results of evaluation, whether as a process or tool, form the basis for improving the curriculum. The document then examines several evaluation models, including Bradley's effectiveness model and Tyler's objectives-centered model, which provide indicators and processes for evaluating curriculum elements and determining strengths and weaknesses.
The document discusses different types of curriculum evaluation including formative, summative, and diagnostic evaluation. Formative evaluation takes place during curriculum implementation to improve instruction and learning, identifies issues early, and helps future planning. Summative evaluation occurs at the end to assess learning and is used for decision making. Diagnostic evaluation identifies prerequisite knowledge and interests at the beginning. All three types provide benefits like remediating weaknesses, guiding placement decisions, and enhancing teaching and learning.
The document discusses a curriculum evaluation class at PED 109. It provides details of the class facilitators and their topics. The topics include what, why and how to evaluate a curriculum, curriculum evaluation through learning assessment, and planning, implementing, and evaluating curriculum understanding connections. It then discusses curriculum evaluation in more depth, including definitions, objectives, reasons for evaluating curriculum, and different models of curriculum evaluation.
Evaluation is the process of collecting data on a programme to determine its value or worth with the aim of deciding whether to adopt, reject, or revise the programme. The public want to know whether the curriculum implemented has achieved its aims and objectives; teachers want to know whether what they are doing in the classroom is effective; and the developer or planner wants to know how to improve the curriculum product.

This review is negative (-) based on the following clues:
- The critique mentions it presents a "cool idea" in a "very bad package"
- It says "these folks just didn't snag this one correctly" implying they failed to execute the concept well
- It directly asks "what are the problems with the movie?" suggesting there are significant issues
- The rest of the critique goes on to list specific problems with the movie's execution
The tone is one of disappointment in a missed opportunity rather than praise for a job well done. Words like "bad", "didn't snag correctly" and the focus on problems indicate negative sentiment toward the film.

The document discusses efforts by the IT department to reduce stock levels at an auto parts company between August 2005 and December 2006. It finds that:
1) Total stock was reduced by KD 90,000, but efforts by the IT department specifically reduced controlled stock items by KD 30,000.
2) Focusing only on controlled items shows stock reductions of KD 110,000, more clearly demonstrating the impact of the IT measures introduced.
3) While stock was reduced, the full KD 110,000 reduction is not visible in financial reports due to stock valuations being merged and obsolete stock provisions.

Williams 2007 Dialectics In Muslim Mindanao Developmentmarkswilliams59
The document examines various dialectics that have characterized discourses of development in Muslim Mindanao since World War II, including tensions between macro vs micro economic policies, indigenous vs national claims, and Western vs non-Western paradigms. It analyzes these dialectics in two categories: concrete applications focusing on economic policies, claims, and authority structures, and philosophical abstractions regarding paradigms, trauma vs resilience, and researcher neutrality vs action. The goal is to understand the complexity of development challenges in Muslim Mindanao and reveal the true forces at play in development efforts.

Towards an Ontology for Historical PersonsJohn Bradley
This document discusses developing an Ontology for Historical Persons (OHP) to better structure prosopographical data on the semantic web. It provides examples of existing models like FOAF, TEI and DDH's factoid model. Developing a standardized OHP could help connect separate prosopography projects and move from closed to open collaboration. The OHP would define entities like persons, assertions, roles, events and relationships to provide a framework for consistently representing prosopographical data in a linked open manner. The document proposes an initial workshop to further explore and develop ideas for the OHP.
Prosopography and Computer Ontologies: Towards a Formal Representation of the...Michele Pasin
This document discusses representing structured prosopography models formally using ontologies. It provides background on different prosopography models, from narrative to structured to factoid-based. It addresses the problem of semantic interoperability between prosopography databases and proposes applying the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model ontology. This would allow factoids to be expressed as interpretation events carried out by actors. The strengths and weaknesses of this approach are considered, along with other potential approaches and future work.

This document discusses different theoretical frameworks for understanding the concept of "information". It summarizes Buckland's matrix that categorizes information into tangible/intangible and entity/process. The document then examines various perspectives on understanding information as a thing, process, and knowledge. It outlines quantitative and qualitative models of information as process, and discusses views of information as knowledge.
This document presents a framework for representing identity using situations and the semantic web. It discusses situation theory and how situations can represent identity-related information. The framework uses semantic web standards like RDF, RDFS and OWL to encode situations and relationships between situations. This allows querying across situations and using rules to classify situations. The goal is to capture evidence and provenance around identity assertions in a structured way using situations.

Emergence and Growth of Knowledge and Diversity in Hierarchically Complex Org...BillHall
Seminar presentation: University of Melbourne Department of Information Systems, 13 October, 2006. Summarises development of a biologically based theory of knowledge based on combining Karl Popper's evolutionary epistemology (as developed in his 1972 book, Objective Knowlege) and Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela's concept of autopoiesis (as developed in their 1980 book, Autopoiesis and Cognition).
The document discusses issues with using speech act theory and the HL7 Reference Information Model (RIM) to achieve semantic interoperability in electronic health records. It argues that representing all clinical information as "acts" in the RIM is problematic and may confuse lexical and contextual meaning. Classifying observations and other constituted facts as persistent entities rather than acts may be more accurate. Requiring full metadata for each data fragment may also be unnecessary and redundant.
The document provides an introduction to using primary and secondary sources in the study of history. It explains that primary sources are first-hand accounts while secondary sources analyze and interpret primary sources and other secondary sources. The document outlines two rules for evaluating the reliability of sources: considering the time and place of the source's creation and accounting for potential biases.

This is the 5th of 23 presentations in a series introducing and outlining my hypertext book project, "Application Holy Wars or a New Reformation - A Fugue on the Theory of Knowledge. The project explores the interactions of technology and cognition in the extraordinary evolutionary history of the human species. Issues raised in the book's Counter Subject are explored:
(1) Relating data, information, knowledge, wisdom.
(2) Understanding the transformation of data, information and knowledge into strategic power over external circumstances.
(3) Understanding evolutionary and revolutionary adaptations to life's problems.
What is information: And what do we do about it?Johan Koren
Information can take many forms and be defined in various ways. It includes anything that is perceptible such as written, spoken, visual, and auditory communications. Information is also defined as knowledge communicated or facts that are learned and can be conveyed to others. It exists in different physical formats including print, audio/visual, and electronic. Information is all-pervasive in modern society and has become integral to science, technology, and everyday life due to pioneering work in information theory by Claude Shannon in the 1940s.
This document is a research paper analyzing the meaning of the term "Son of Man" in the Gospel of Matthew. It begins with a lengthy introduction outlining the various historical interpretations of the term among scholars. The author then presents their method, which is to closely study the literary context and use of Hebrew Scripture references/allusions in Matthew. The paper is organized around the three categories of Son of Man sayings in Matthew: public proclamation, private teaching on suffering, and private teaching on future power. In the section on public proclamation, the author analyzes the unique way Jesus uses the term "Son of Man" as a self-designation and considers what the original hearers may have understood by it, noting debate
The Challenge of Deeper Knowledge Graphs for SciencePaul Groth
Over the past 5 years, we have seen multiple successes in the development of knowledge graphs for supporting science in domains ranging from drug discovery to social science. However, in order to really improve scientific productivity, we need to expand and deepen our knowledge graphs. To do so, I believe we need to address two critical challenges: 1) dealing with low resource domains; and 2) improving quality. In this talk, I describe these challenges in detail and discuss some efforts to overcome them through the application of techniques such as unsupervised learning; the use of non-experts in expert domains, and the integration of action-oriented knowledge (i.e. experiments) into knowledge graphs.
Thanks to Hollywood, firearms and the forensic information associa.docxmattinsonjanel
Thanks to Hollywood, firearms and the forensic information associate with them has been portrayed as the key piece of evidence in many “case.” Fingerprinting is oftentimes overshadowed. Your goal is to argue the importance of fingerprinting in our cases. Discuss three specific points why fingerprint evidence is crucial to our investigation.
If your last name begins with A-L, address the following:
How might you enlighten those who believe fingerprint evidence no longer has a place in forensic investigation?
Support your thoughts with at least one crime case.
When responding to your classmates, respond to at least one classmate who has been assigned the opposite opinion of yours.
If your last name begins with M-Z, address the following:
How might you back your opinion of fingerprint evidence still having an impact in forensic science cases today?
Support your thoughts with at least one crime case.
When responding to your peers, respond to at least one peer who has been assigned the opposite opinion of yours.
This Assignment above is already complete your next assignment is to:
Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts.
You Must Provide Feedback on what they have written.
You should include your thoughts associated with their posted information.
Additionally, you are to contribute to the discussion by adding support or constructive alternatives to your classmates’ posts.
Each response should be a minimum of 200 words.
You are to provide feedback from two students discussion posts
Two discussion posts 200 words each= 400 words total for the two different student responses
See attachment below for two different student responses I provided for you
First Student Response Amy Fleshner
“Fingerprints are a form of biometric identifier, a biological measurement or feature of a person that has the potential of being used as the basis for individualization” (Gaensslen & Larsen, 2013, sec. 7.4). Four ways fingerprint evidence is crucial to our investigation because:
“1. Friction ridges develop on individuals in their definitive form before birth.
2. Friction ridges are persistent throughout life except for permanent scarring.
3. Friction ridge patterns and the details in small areas of friction ridges are unique and never repeated.
4. Fingerprint patterns vary within limits which allow for systematic classification” (Bush, 2001, para. 3).
Because fingerprints do not change, naturally, throughout a lifetime it is helpful to investigations because it isn’t possible for them to evolve or change without some sort of scaring. This is unique to every individual and because of the different classification of fingerprints, it is beneficial for investigators to study, understand, and match a fingerprint with a known suspect. The keyword with this is naturally. It is possible for an individual to scar their fingerprints so terribly that they cannot be matched or found in a data base. If, in fact, a suspect has scars ...

Towards a bibliographic model of illustraions in the early modern bookJohn Bradley
This document discusses developing a bibliographic model to better represent illustrations in early modern illustrated books. It summarizes key points about illustrations being overlooked historically but having a complex relationship with text. It proposes a model with two FRBR stacks for text and images linked by a "set" to capture variability between book copies. This would better represent books as individual physical objects while distinguishing images and text as distinct cultural objects.
Capturing and expressing REED's (Records of Early English Drama) essence in a digital future. Given at Envisioning REED in the Digital Age 4-5 April, 2011. University of Toronto
This document discusses digital tools for humanists and their impact. It examines Douglas Engelbart's vision of augmenting human intellect with computers. While tools like Pliny aimed to help with tasks like annotation and note-taking, they have had little uptake by humanists. Reasons for both the success and failure of digital tools are considered, such as whether they address the actual work of humanists, their usability, and whether they reach the right audience. The document also references debates around what constitutes scholarly work and the role of interpretation in research.

How the Prosopography of the Byzantine World could fit with a "digital ecosystem" to support Byzantine Studies. Invited presentation at full day seminar PBW and its place in Byzantine Scholarship. Keble College, University of Oxford. 7 October, 2013.
The document discusses the connections between annotation and scholarship in a digital context. It explores how digital annotation differs from pre-digital annotation and the new possibilities it offers to humanities scholarship. It discusses early conceptions of annotation on the web by Berners-Lee and how annotation was almost featured in the Mosaic browser. It also examines scholarly practices like reading, notetaking, and how annotation serves as a nexus between these activities and the writing process. Finally, it discusses how digital tools can support annotation and scholarship throughout the research process.
This document discusses different perspectives on digital humanities. It partitions digital humanities into four areas: traditional scholarship about digital things, data analysis using digital tools, data representation using digital tools, and making digital tools. Each area is then briefly described, with examples provided. The document also discusses how digital tools and techniques are being applied in humanities research processes and outputs.
Tools for a whole range of Scholarly Activities (at DH2015)John Bradley
The proposal introduces a simple classification scheme for digital tools for the Digital Humanities, and explores how the classification scheme introduces issues about tool building in the DH.

Do People Really Know Their Fertility Intentions? Correspondence between Sel...Xiao Xu
Fertility intention data from surveys often serve as a crucial component in modeling fertility behaviors. Yet, the persistent gap between stated intentions and actual fertility decisions, coupled with the prevalence of uncertain responses, has cast doubt on the overall utility of intentions and sparked controversies about their nature. In this study, we use survey data from a representative sample of Dutch women. With the help of open-ended questions (OEQs) on fertility and Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods, we are able to conduct an in-depth analysis of fertility narratives. Specifically, we annotate the (expert) perceived fertility intentions of respondents and compare them to their self-reported intentions from the survey. Through this analysis, we aim to reveal the disparities between self-reported intentions and the narratives. Furthermore, by applying neural topic modeling methods, we could uncover which topics and characteristics are more prevalent among respondents who exhibit a significant discrepancy between their stated intentions and their probable future behavior, as reflected in their narratives.

one of those names that starts with HTTP.

4. Ontologies and a
“prosopographical” domain
Vast amount of data is related to
people to various degrees: what is
most properly prosopographical?
Good Ontology design practice: a kind
of “Occam's Razor”.
So what information related to persons
is IN prosopography and what is
OUT?
4
6. Prosopography and Identity of
Persons
An important part of prosopography is in
the identifying of persons
What's constitutes an historical person's
identity?
Formal URIs provide a part of the linked
data answer.
However, historical identity, by its nature
of being contestable, requires more than
this:
◦ Abraham, bishop of Dunblane (fl.1210×14-
1220×25) (id 749)
6
7. Prosopography: more than “just”
person identification
Historical persons survive for us through their
appearance in sources, and historians identify
them not only by their name, but also by what they
did and by other ways that they are described.
7
8. Information about persons is a
part of prosopography.
Assertions about a person have
traditionally formed the basis of
prosopography.
One could argue that historical people
from before the immediate past only
"survive" in our memory through their
presence in sources: what sources
assert about them.
Arguments about their identity flow from
what these sources say to us. 8
9. Identity as a Contestable
thing
Historical Prosopography must be contestable, since it deals
in information which is often uncertain.
◦ About Person (I think your A is my (slightly different) B)
◦ About statements about a person (I think this statement belong to
a different person, or mis-interprets the sources)
◦ After date/timing (I think this event happened at a different time)
Thus, simply naming a person A, and then simply asserting
that s/he is different from someone else's person B is not
sufficient!!
The identification has to not only be made, it has to be
testable and contestable.
To make such assertions testable, one needs data about the
person.
This is Berners-Lee's 2nd point!
9
10. Data in a standard format for
prosopography?
"I get important information back. I will get back
some data in a standard format which is kind of
useful data that somebody might like to know about
that thing, about that event.“ (Berners-Lee: TED
2009)
What is the data in a "standard format"?
Mainstream Linked Data, take this to mean data in
RDF
◦ highly structured.
What is a representation about a person then that
is highly structured?

13. Factoid Assertions are …
Time dependant
◦ PoMS's Abraham 749's identity seems to be
wrapped up in his having been Bishop of
Dunblane.
◦ Even so, an assertion such as "Abraham (ID
749) was Bishop of Dunblane" is actually time
dependant
Material about him might well exist from times
before or after he was Bishop of Dunblane.
Source Driven:
◦ The factoid model aims to present what the
sources are saying, and downplays what the
modern day prosopographers, as historians,
believe.

15. Problems: Agent and Event
driven approaches
Historical persons are not (always)
agents
◦ Oxford English Dictionary:
2: A person or thing that takes an active role or produces a
specified effect.
2.1: (Grammar) The doer of an action, typically expressed a the
subject of an active verb of in a by phrase with a passive verb.
◦ Merriam-Webster:
1. one that acts or exerts power
Assertions are not always about
events

16. TEI: Personography: “Basic
Principles”
Information about people, places, and
organizations, of whatever type, essentially
comprises a series of statements or
assertions relating to:
◦ characteristics or traits which do not, by and large, change
over time
◦ characteristics or states which hold true only at a specific
time
◦ events or incidents which may lead to a change of state or,
less frequently, trait.

Data
All kinds of conceptual things, they have names now that start
with HTTP.
I get important information back. I will get back some data in a
standard format which is kind of useful data that somebody
might like to know about that thing, about that event.
I get back that information it's not just got somebody's
height and weight and when they were born, it's got
relationships. And when it has relationships, whenever it
expresses a relationship then the other thing that it's
related to is given one of those names that starts with
HTTP.

30. Uncertainty
A data model needs to accommodate
statements of uncertainty. Where and
how?
The factoid model, by being "source
driven" deals with one aspect of this.
An factoid assertion is a claim about
what a source says, not what the
project believes (thus, a little less like
biography).
30
31. Uncertainty
Dates: we use a TEI-like date model
for dates in our factoids
Qualification of statements, probably
at the factoid and factoid/person level:
Certain, Uncertain, Very Uncertain
31
32. Summary
Identity of an historical person is
based on the assertions found in the
sources.
The factoid model is designed to
reflect this source-driven orientation.
Agent and Event orientation is not the
full story for prosopography.
The factoid model can be mapped
best to reified RDF statements.
Uncertainty is always an element in
history, and needs to be 32

fits in in the SNAP-DRGN project!
Places (perhaps linked to, but the task
of formally organising places is a
project in its own right)
Sources (linked to, but not captured or
represented)
35
37. Linked Data and History
If linked data is to connect historical
data, it is likely to work best when
centered on three kinds of entities:
◦ Sources
◦ Places
◦ People
What adequately represents a linked
data representation of
prosopography?

Editor's Notes
It seems to me that Linked Data has developed out of the Semantic Web as a kind of simplification of its goals. Here is a quote from a talk Tim Berners-Lee gave at the TED 2009 conference about Linked Data which outlines the key ideas behind Linked Data:
that one names things (not only web pages) by giving them URIs (like URLs) that start with http.
that if you give one of these to the WWW, you get back useful information in a standard format (elsewhere, the format is specified to be the structured-data oriented RDF format)
and, that the data you get is situated in a digital world that is linked to other pieces of data

This is a visualisation of all of the charter witnesses in the PoMS database who have witnessed more than 20 charters together. Given that these people have witnessed over 20 charters together, it is likely that this represent real social relationships. This would not be necessarily be true if they witnessed only one or two charters together. There is significance in the shape of this network. First, the top of the “T” structure represents a timeline with the earlier witnesses on the right arm and later witnesses on the left arm. The right arm is thicker than the left arm because there were fewer charters in the later time. Duncan Earl of Fife (#13) in the centre of the right arm has witnessed 2nd highest number of charters (210) and has more co-witnesses (630) than anyone else. William del Bois (#42) chancellor, whose role includes administrating charters, serves as bridge between all three arms of the main component of the network. He also bridges the reigns of two kings. He has witnessed 213 charters. The arm below him is a geographical cluster from Coldingham priory. The group of seven people off to the left is a collection of three overlapping cliques. A clique in SNA is a group where everyone is connected to everyone else. There are two four member cliques and one three member clique which all share two people. According to Georg Simmel, norms are required to keep cliques together. What all seven share is that they hold ecclesiastical positions and the more than 20 charters they have witnessed deal with internal transfers of property within the church. This is why they are not connected to the main component of the network.
