Boon and Bane of Nuclear Power
Introduction
In these modern times, are nuclear power plants feasible to every nation around the world? How about in a nation experiencing the toll of depletion of
resources, destruction of nature and poverty at the same time; is it still an answer for economic growth? Is the construction of nuclear power plants an
aid for the spur of development of a country or a growing threat to the environment? Do nuclear power plants serve the people best or destroy the
nature best? Nuclear power plants are said to have drastic effects both good and bad for a country where it will be used for. Surely it will increase the
supply of energy of each country; this will contribute more to the economic productivity of the served country. However, it is... Show more content on

The turbine then spins a generator to produce power. In some nuclear power plants, a secondary heat exchanger is used to convert another loop of
water to steam, which drives the turbine.
The Boons of a Nuclear Power Plant
Energy
Until about 1800, the principal fuel was wood. Since the Industrial Revolution, fossil fuels are the major source of energy. When a fossil fuel is
burned, atoms of hydrogen and carbon combine with oxygen atoms in air. Water and carbon dioxide are produced and heat is released, equivalent to
about 1.6 kilowatt–hours per kilogram or about 10 electron volts per atom of carbon. This amount of energy is typical of chemical reactions resulting
from changes in the electronic structure of the atoms. A part of the energy released as heat keeps the adjacent fuel hot enough to keep the reaction going.
In comparison, a nuclear fission reaction releases 10 million times the energy released in using fossil fuels. Nuclear energy is released when the
fission of a heavy nucleus such as п‚ЇU is induced by the absorption of a neutron A fission of an atom produces about 200 MeV, or 3.2 Г
— 10–11 J.
The energy per fission is very large. In practical units, the fission of a 1 kg uranium–235 releases 18.7 million kilowatt–hours as heat. The neutrons
released from fission of one atom cause the fission of two more atoms, thereby releasing more

Human Cloning
Ethical Concerns on Human Cloning Human cloning, one of the most fascinating chapters in scientific history. Cloning goes back to the first mammal
that was successfully cloned, Dolly the sheep. Dolly was duplicated on July 5, 1996 and since then the world has had many scientific advancements.
Abby Norman, author of "How Close Are We to SuccessfullyCloning our First Human" said that other types of mammals such as goats, rats, pigs,
mice, and rabbits have been cloned successfully but cloning other mammals and primates may not be so easy. Scientists are not yet able to
successfully clone a human, but believe they will be able to do so by the 2020s. (Norman) Along with such a controversial topic there comes many
who would agree that copying a human would be beneficial while on the opposing side some would argue that replicating someone's genes is ethically
wrong. Cloning is a very important topic and according to the President's Council on Bioethics, "The prospect of cloning–to–produce–children, which
would be a radically new form of procreation, raises deep concerns about identity and individuality, the meaning of having children, the difference
between procreation and manufacture, and the relationship between the generations" ("Human Cloning and Human Dignity: An Ethical Inquiry",
2017). Although useful for studying genetic diseases, human cloning produces issues as to whether it should be allowed or not because some believe
the copy will have the same personality and

Environmental Effects Of Overfishing
With the knowledge that high demand over seafood are being abused worldwide, what can we do to restore the current damage of our marine
ecosystem. As we face the consequences of overfishing, many people are unaware that our aquatic food chain are currently collapsing up to ninety
percent; possibly ending it all in year of two thousand forty three if we do not make a change in our ways (Pauly 861). These numbers are not an
exasperation and they are increasing. Only one percent of most species are recovering from depletion (861). As the caregiver of our world, we must
not choose to turn our backs on the question, "Will we still be able to save our reefs?". Instead we must embrace it.
The history of overfishing recorded started in the eighteenth century when the whale species were poached for their blubber to make lamp oil, their
meat, and collect their bones to carve as tools (Marrero 69). Later on in the century when fossil fuel was discovered, it became more popular and
reliable than whale oil. Resulting in the whaling industry to plummet; left at least eight whale species endangered (69). Today whaling is illegal in the
United States, but are still going on in Japan and Norway to be used for scientific study purposes and a source of food (69). Putting these beautiful
mammals dangerously close to extinction for our own selfish reasons. With the modern world improving on their technologies, so are the ways of
capturing fish deeper in the pacific oceans. Today boats

Essay on Whispering in the Giants Ear by William Powers
Williams Powers, an ecotourist activist wrote in his book, Whispering in the Giants Ear, "That which we allow to exist, to flourish freely according to
its own rhythms, is superior to anything our little hands create." Ecotourism is defined as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the
environment and improves the well–being of local people."
Economical Impact Ecotourism plays a vital role in a nations economy. Many factors entail whether a country can be successful economically.
Ecotourism has thrived and failed, depending on how it was operated. Once a country accepts money from their government to begin ecotourism, they
will be forever in debt. When the governments fronts the money, the government is in control.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was concerning to the government, but unlike the Philippines, the Costa Rican government agreed with the locals to invest and trust in
ecotourism for a decade. After nine years, in 1973, Costa Rica had broke even. In 1974 they made over ten million. Ever since 1974, profits had
come in exponentially. From 1974 to 1994 over six hundred million was brought in. In 1999 for the first time in Costa Rican history over one million
ecotourists came to Costa Rica. They brought in over one billion in revenue. Many speculate that the Philippines were on the same track, but the lack of
communication between the government and people proved catastrophic. Costa Rica is known as the focal point for ecotourism worldwide.
Ecotourism began in Costa Rica in the 1970's. It was very small and began to grow exponentially in the late 1980's. In 1970 Costa Rica had a GNP,
gross national product of 1000 million in 1995 that number nonuple to 9000 million. Many consider 1978 the first year ecotourism began in Costa
Rica. At that time, Costa Rica had a GNP/capita of 1500. After the ecotourism boom, the number ballooned to 2000 in 1992. It is evident by the 33%
increase in GNP/capita that ecotourism was a positive influence economically on Costa Rica. Another key problem is that the economic benefit of
ecotourism does not always reach the local community. One of ecotourisms main goals is to help the local community generate domestic employment

Solution Of Plastic Pollution
Plastic pollution makes up the majority of pollution problems all over the world, on land and off land. There are few solutions to fixing this
pollution problem overall because of plastic properties. The pollution in the ocean poses a great problem to marine ecosystems, and to the health of
the human population due to its durability. Over the years the consumption of plastic products has risen a marginal amount making the issue of
pollution even larger ("When the Mermaids Cry: The Great Plastic Tide"). The pollution causes damage to the economy, environment, marine life,
human health, along with the global impact. If the plastic pollution problem does not decrease, or completely disappear, then there will be great
consequences in the oceans and on land. Plastic is a non biodegradable material that is made to last forever, yet only about 50% of plastic products
are used once then thrown away. (Plastic Oceans Foundation). The world uses 300 million tons of plastic every year for various uses, "Plastic is
cheap and incredibly versatile with properties that make it ideal for many applications" (Plastic Oceans Foundation). Every few seconds humans are
producing about 20,000 plastic bottles and "a million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute and the number will jump another 20%
by 2021, creating an environmental crisis some campaigners predict will be as serious as climate change." (Laville, Sandra, and Matthew Taylor).

Asia: the World's Largest and Most Popular Continent
ASIA
Asia is the world's largest and most populous continent, located primarily in the eastern and northern hemispheres. It covers 8.7% of the Earth's total
surface area (or 30% of its land area) and with approximately 3.9 billion people, it hosts 60% of the world's current human population. During the 20th
century Asia's population nearly quadrupled. Asia is generally defined as comprising the eastern four–fifths of Eurasia. It is located to the east of the
Suez Canal and the Ural Mountains, and south of the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian and Black Seas. It is bounded on the east by the Pacific
Ocean, on the south by the Indian Ocean and on the north by the Arctic Ocean. Asia differs very widely among and within its regions with... Show

ETYMOLOGY Asia was originally a concept of Western civilization.[14] The place name, "Asia", in various forms in a large number of modern
languages is of unknown ultimate provenience. Its etymology and language of origin are uncertain. It appears to be one of the most ancient of
recorded names. A number of theories have been published. English Asia can be traced through the formation of English literature to Latin literature,
where it has the same form, Asia. Whether all uses and all forms of the name derive also from the Latin of the Roman Empire is much less certain.
ECONOMIC Asia has the second largest nominal GDP of all continents, after Europe, but the largest when measured in purchasing power parity. As
of 2011, the largest economies in Asia are China, Japan, India, South Korea and Indonesia. Based on Global Office Locations 2011, Asia dominated
the office locations with 4 of top 5 were in Asia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, London and Shanghai. Around 68 percent of international firms have
office in Hong Kong. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the economies of the PRC] and India have been growing rapidly, both with an average annual

Mandrill Vs Gibbon Essay
Introduction
There are many similarities and differences in primate species. The ones I chose to focus on today was the Philippine tarsier, Mandrill and the gibbon.
What made me choose these non– human primates so interesting was the uniqueness and appearance of each primate. I plan to explain the similarities
of their teeth structure and purposes and the similarities of their diet and feeding and also the differences of their behaviors. Mandrills are extremely
colorful, perhaps more so than any other mammal. They also have extremely long canine teeth that can be used for self–defense though baring them is
typically a friendly gesture among mandrills. These are primarily terrestrial monkeys, and they move with long arms to move on the ground for fruits,

has the same canine fairly long but not s long as the mandrill still a enough resemblance use to scare off their enemy as well. Also they share the
same diet and like to feed on the same resources such as leaves, and insects. The Philippine tarsier share many similarities with the Gibbon they are
both arboreal which means they spend most of their time in the trees. And they both have unique functions of their bodies which helps them to
maneuver from tree to tree the Philippine tarsier tibia and fibula are fused in their lower portions, acting as a shock absorber. This is considered a
primitive trait, which can normally be seen in quadrupeds. The lower limbs are twice the length of its trunk. The Gibbons have shoulder flexors,
extensors, rotator muscles and elbow flexors with a high power or work–generating capacity and their wrist flexors have a high force–generating
capacity which allows the gibbon

The first reason for this is because of the age they were at the time of exposure. The second reason would be the manner of exposure. The final reason
would be the transfer of antigens, antibodies and anti–idiotypes from the mother. Immediately after exposure the person will have intense transient

Prehistory literally means "before history". It is derived from the Latin word which means "before" (Prehistory Wikipedia, 2011). This was the era
when there were no written records yet about the existence of the first wave of ancient humans. This was also the time when the periods were divided

One thing is they do not care anymore and they are not interested to know. They already lack the interest to know more about their country's history
because they fail to understand what the real essence of learning about history is. Probably because their teachers during their elementary and high
school days just taught them about memorizing the facts that just includes all of the dates of historical events and names of heroes and leaders.
That is why, they do not get any value from this kind of learning. Therefore, in order to let others appreciate about the history of their country, it
should first be taught to them in a right way. It should be inculcated from the very start that what you learn from history is what you will have to
learn later about the society and the people around you. People should first understand that history is not just all about facts. It is about why life
happened and why we share the same value and tradition. These insights should let them realized that if without history, we won't have a basis of
why and how life is in the present and will be in the future. At least, when we have a firm knowledge of what our history is, we will be able to have a
right and clear disposition of the present and future circumstance that we shall encounter because everything just goes back to our history. That is why,
history repeats itself. So in order for us to prevent the bad memories

Guns Germs And Steel Summary
Cassidy Elibol Prologue In the prologue of Jared Diamond's book, Guns, Germs, and Steel, Diamond introduces readers to a question posed to him by
Yali, a New Guinean politician. Yali inquired about the reason for different developmental rates of civilizations, and Diamond, who couldn't explain at
the time, began to search for the answer. Diamond links certain "power factors," such as advanced weaponry, certain diseases, and metal tools, to the
rate of advancement in civilizations. However, the causes for the creation and use of the "power factors" in some civilizations, but not others, remains
an unsolved mystery. In the prologue, fittingly titled "Yali's Question," Diamond expresses his belief that throughout history, civilizations develop

First, Diamond talks about a few ways that disease can spread. One way is by waiting to be transferred between victims. For example, microbes
that travel on food are contracted this way. Another passive way of transmission is by surviving in insect saliva and then passing to a host when
the insect bites. Disease can also spread in aggressive ways, for example, some microbes change their host's body so transmission is accelerated.
Smallpox uses this technique by forming skin lesions. Microbes can also travel amongst people by forcing infected individuals to cough or sneeze,
which in effect shoots the microbes toward other host bodies. Next, the author lists the efforts of the human body to expel the disease. For instance, a
fever is one way a body can rid itself of microbes, specifically heat–sensitive ones. Other times, blood cells will hunt down and exterminate
disease–causing organisms, and build up resistance to that organism in case it ever reenters the body. The final and slowest defense Diamond lists is
natural selection. Humans with genes for resistance live longer and pass on the traits, creating more individuals who can survive against a certain

Development And Application Of Geographic Information System
Development and Application of Geographic Information System (GIS) in Marine Fishery Realm
During a long period of time, realm of marine fishery has always been focusing more on subjects like morphology, taxonomy, ethology, physiology,
cytology and breeding science, instead of on the distribution of marine species and the interaction between fish and marine environmental conditions
(Kracker, 1999), until Geographic Information System (GIS) was widely used by different disciplines as an effective tool of tackling spatial
problems. As a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data, GIS was firstly
used in marine fishery realm in 1980s (Kapetsky & et al, 1987), and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Besides distribution map, GIS was also used by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to draw a series of maps (Populus &
Lantieri, 1991) that reflected land use types of intertidal zones and seabed, coastal lines and the depth contour lines.
Till the early 1990s, the connection between GIS and marine fishery became much closer; GIS began to be applied for electronic atlas. Skagex
electronic atlas was completed by Ostrowski (1994), embracing physic physical, chemical, biological and hydrological parameters of the territorial seas
of 7 Baltic states. Also in this phase, The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC, Ramster,1993) implemented the UK Digital Marine Atlas
(UKDMAP), which integrated the marine information of geology, geomorphology, meteorology, hydrology, especially the fishery areas, conservation
areas, islands and breeding ground of British territorial seas. These atlases have already possessed the fundamental functions of GIS such as
superimposition data searching, distance calculation.
In the mid and late 1990s, the application of GIS in marine fishery realm was further improved. Pollitt (1994) built a Fishery Protection Information
System (FPIS) by the comprehensive utilization of GIS, expert systems and database systems, providing service for the Irish fishery patrol according
to the local laws, information of ships and geological features. Meaden and his group (2000)

Why Chinatown Study Anthropology
The Chinatown Game Lecture only touched upon the topic of the game called The Miss L.A. Chinatown Missing towards the end of the lecture, it was
mostly about Chinatowns around the world in general. This particular lecture fit in well with class due to the race and gender aspects. To elaborate,
when it comes to race, the lecturer pointed out the fact that Chinese individuals have been seen as in the past as subhuman compared to other races.
An example that was used to show Chinese as subhuman was that they are depicted as mole like for keeping to themselves and in Chinatowns, there
are passageways as well as underground stories. This depiction of Chinese individuals being labeled subhuman made me think of the "Why Mammals

immigrants so the Chinatown seemed like it should be built there. In 1990, Singapore built a Chinatown which many people felt was not needed since
Singapore is mostly populated by Chinese but it was done for tourism. It was modeled from the one in San Francisco so it is different than what would
have traditionally been built. Lastly, when it comes to gender and gender roles, an interesting instance of switching gender roles has taken place in a

WhatВґs The Ebola Virus?
Ebola is defined as a virus that causes severe bleeding, organ failure, and can lead to death (Mayo Clinic). Ebola was first discovered in 1976 near the
Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (CDC). It was previously known as Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever and is a very rare and deadly
disease caused by infection with a strain of the Ebola virus (CDC). The Ebola virus has a 50% to 90% fatality rate (Visual Science Company). In
2014, there were only 6 cases in the U.S (Mayo Clinic). It is most common in African countries and appears sporadically. The disease can occur in
humans and nonhuman mammals, such as monkeys, bats, and apes (CDC). There are five different identified species of the Ebola virus and all
belong to the genus Ebolavirus. Four of the species are known to cause disease in humans: Ebolavirus zaire; Ebolavirus sudan; Ebolavirus taД« forest;
and Ebolavirus bundibugyo. The fifth virus, Ebolavirus reston, has only infected ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Clinic). Ebola can lead to death for a high percentage of people who are infected. One reason that the virus is so deadly is because it interferes with the
immune system's ability to mount a defense (CDC). Scientists can't wrap their heads around the fact that some people recover and others don't. For
those who survive, recovery is slow. It may take months to regain weight and strength, and the virus remains in the body for weeks (CDC). People may

Oil Spill
Introduction
In the recent years there have been occurrences of oil spills in several locations within our country. Knowing that these have adverse effects on our
environment and the ecosystem as a whole, we've always been in search of ways to counter this major problem. The damages we receive from an oil
spill far exceed our expectations. Once oil contaminates our waters it takes time to clean up.

However, if oil contaminates shallow waters the results can be much direr. In these cases the oil mixes with mud and other substances and accumulates
on the bottom. This means that the oil can last for decades causing a lot of problems for marine life, water quality, human health and livelihood.
Effects on Water Quality Water is a liquid that every living creature needs in order to survive. How does oil affect our ocean? In Ogoniland Nigeria,
the people there have dealt with nearly 50 years of oil production and water contamination. This caused confusion in whether it was safe to drink this
kind of water or eat this kind of fish. Commotion over little things are being argued about or doubted. This is what an oil spill does to us and our life.
When oil spills happen, oil contaminates the water making it difficult for fishermen to fish. Just like the incident that happened in Manila Bay where
the authorities were forced to ban fishing for the safety of all the people. This accident jeopardized the fishermen's means of survival. Also, water
contamination reduces water quality. Oil poisons the water and the creatures inhabiting it. Plants are also affected by the reduction of water quality
because the reduction of water quality will ultimately lead to the halting of photosynthesis Besides, when oil spill occurs, there are long–term effects.

Non Human Primates
For many animals, the ability to move is essential for survival. Animals move for a variety of reasons such as: to find food, a mate, a habitat to live
in, or to escape predators. It is important for animals to develop new abilities and traits to accomplish these necessities of living. Natural selection has
shaped the locomotion methods and mechanisms used by moving organisms for millions of years. Generally, non–human primates are studied to garner
an understanding of evolution caused by natural selection because of the many distinctive adaptations that have occurred within their taxonomic order.
To understand the origin of locomotion that exist amongst primates, the two categories of primates must be analyzed to recognize morphological trait
differences. Then, three major determinants can be evaluated to describe the variety of locomotor patterns primates display: the ecological niches in
which the primate originates, the current inhabited niches, and the major key aspects of survival such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It can be defined almost entirely in terms of dietary specialization. These different categories represented in the primate order all display forms of
locomotion that have evolved based on unique environmental origins. Non–human primates live in a diverse number of forested habitats in the tropical

Australian Aboriginal Society
Australia is located south of Papua New Guinea, in the southern and eastern hemispheres and is surrounded by the Pacific and Indian oceans. The
absolute location is 25.2744В° S, 133.7751В° E. The island is thought to have been inhibited by Aboriginal people since 70,000 B.C. The Dutch were
the first Europeans to land on the west coast of Australia, and named the island "New Holland". In 1770 British explorer James Cook discovered the
east coast of Australia. He landed in Botany Bay (Sydney), and named the territory "New South Wales".
Rapid population increase and high crime in England led to the colonization of "New South Wales" (Australia) and the establishment of a penal colony
on the island. On May 13, 1787 England sent 11 ships ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Viral Hemorrhagic Fever and Ebola Virus Species
What is Ebola hemorrhagic fever? Ebola hemorrhagic fever (Ebola HF) is a severe, often–fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates (monkeys,
gorillas, and chimpanzees) that has appeared sporadically since its initial recognition in 1976. The disease is caused by infection with Ebola virus,
named after a river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) in Africa, where it was first recognized. The virus is one of two
members of a family of RNA viruses called the Filoviridae. There are five identified subtypes of Ebola virus. Four of the five have caused disease in
humans: Ebola–Zaire, Ebola–Sudan, Ebola–Ivory Coast and Ebola–Bundibugyo. The fifth, Ebola–Reston, has caused disease in nonhuman primates,
but not in humans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Persons tested later in the course of the disease or after recovery can be tested for IgM and IgG antibodies; the disease can also be diagnosed
retrospectively in deceased patients by using immunohistochemistry testing, virus isolation, or PCR.
How is Ebola hemorrhagic fever treated?
There is no standard treatment for Ebola HF. Patients receive supportive therapy. This consists of balancing the patient's fluids and electrolytes,
maintaining their oxygen status and blood pressure, and treating them for any complicating infections.
How is Ebola hemorrhagic fever prevented?
The prevention of Ebola HF in Africa presents many challenges. Because the identity and location of the natural reservoir of Ebola virus are unknown,
there are few established primary prevention measures.
If cases of the disease do appear, current social and economic conditions often favor the spread of an epidemic within health–care facilities. Therefore,
health–care providers must be able to recognize a case of Ebola HF should one appear. They must also have the capability to perform diagnostic tests
and be ready to employ practical viral hemorrhagic fever isolation precautions, or barrier nursing techniques. These techniques include the wearing of
protective clothing, such as masks, gloves, gowns, and goggles; the use of infection–control measures, including complete equipment sterilization; and
the isolation of Ebola HF patients from contact with unprotected

Taking a Look at the Ogasawara Archipelago
The Japanese volcanic island arc known as the Ogasawara Archipelago enjoys a warm, marine subtropical climate and is free from the industrial
overpopulation of mainland Japan. These islands are situated in one of the most highly active volcanic regions of the world, part of the Pacific Ring
of Fire, and formed by the subduction of the Pacific Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate boundaries. The islands themselves were formed by eruptions of
lava due to undersea oceanic plate convergence over fifteen million years ago. Nishino–shima's coordinates lie at 27.247В°N / 140.874В°E, and is one
of the youngest islands, believed to be only ten thousand years old, with the last active vent erupting in 1973. The Ogasawara Islands are known in
English as the Bonin Islands, about 600 miles south of Japan, visited by a ferry ride from Tokyo. Only the two largest islands, Chichijima (Father
Island) and Hahajima (Mother Island) in this chain are inhabited. [Nunn, 2009] Niijima is born On November 20, 2013 at 10:30 A.M., black smoke
was first seen billowing forth from the sea, directly off the west shore of Nishino–shima. Volcanologists and scientists observed a new island measuring
600 feet across, gushing a basaltic andesite lava. [Kurtenbach, 2013] The Japanese government hastily named their newest island Niijima, meaning "the

Domestication Of Bananas And Plantain

Domestication of Bananas and Plantain (Musa spp.)
Abstract
Bananas and plantains (Musa spp.) are one of the major staple foods in the world. In 2006 the estimated world production of bananas was 80.6 million
tons while 16.8 tons were traded (Cohen, 2011). Although bananas are common today, the origins of thebanana are complex and occurred over
thousands of years during multiple stages. Archeologists focused on the Kuk Valley of New Guininea, the area where the domestication of bananas
supposedly took place around 8,000 BCE (Before Common Era) (Bot, 2007). The study of banana history has been difficult because banana pollen and
seeds were rare or absent at archaeological sites. It wasn't until recent technologies and the use of multi–disciplinary research that we could gain a better
understanding. Genetics and linguistic studies also help in understanding the banana origin (Hirst, 2015). Diploid and triploid forms of bananas have
been identified and their distribution throughout the world is a key piece of evidence in unlocking the truth about banana domestication.
Introduction
The banana (Musa spp.) is a large perennial herb with leaf sheaths that form their pseudostems, meaning they are rather giant herbs than trees. Both the
plantain and banana are sterile and parthenocarpic so the fruit is seedless. The plant is made up of 8–12 leaves that are about 9ft tall and 2ft wide
(Chia and Huggins, 1992). Bananas are considered the

The First Commercial Nuclear Power Plants
The first commercial nuclear power plants were constructed in 1950. The public was promised a non–polluting and resourceful type of energy.
Although there are less than 500 nuclear power plants in the world, but many nuclear accidents have already been endangering civilian lives, such as
the accidents in Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and the most recent Fukushima Diichi. Nuclear energy may appear to be the ideal source of energy for
the future. However, there are uncontrolled situations that cause the reactor into meltdown and lead to disaster. On March 11, 2011 Japan experienced
an earthquake, which has become the most terrible and destructive in the history of this country. In term of geography, Japan is situated in the
earthquake–prone area, on the junction of four plates: the Eurasian, Pacific, North American and Philippine. The Eurasian plate is slowly moving to the
east, and three others – to the west, so their friction causes earthquakes. Japanese know about the danger based on their country geography, but they
were not ready for this kind of disaster. A 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck at 2.46pm about 70km east of Tohoku at an offshore subduction zone,
where two tectonic plates collide and one slides beneath the other. According to IBT news, Its centre was on the seafloor at a 24km depth, this
earthquake was so powerful it shifted Earth on its axis of rotation. The energy released by the earthquake produced a huge tsunami, with waves up to

The Ocean Of The Sea
An ocean is a very large expanse of sea, in particular, each of the main areas into which the sea is divided geographically. Have you ever been
fascinated with the ocean or just something that interest you? Well this essay is about my fascination and what I know and how a came to understand
the ocean. The ocean is a very mysterious, beautiful place where anything can happen at any time and to understand it one must pay close attention to it
a research and that 's exact what I did.
A tide is the rise and fall of the water in the ocean. This is caused by four aspects the moon, the sun, gravity, and the rotation of theearth. The ocean has
many types of ecosystems as well, such as coral reefs, abyssal plains, arctic, deep sea, hypothermal vent, kelp forests, mangroves, rocky shores, salt
marshes, and mud flats. Coral reefs are the most important part of the oceans they do many things such as protecting the coastline from wave action
and storms, provides habitats for many marine organisms, and they are also a major source of nitrogen. Also, coral reefs assist in carbon and nitrogen
fixing. Lastly, coral reefs are the most diverse place in the ocean meaning it holds the most living different type of organisms across the world.
An abyssal plain an underwater plain on the floor of the ocean and they cover more than fifty percent of the earth surface and they are one of the least
explored places in the ocean. Artic ecosystems even though it has very cold conditions this ecosystem

Animals : Ended And Endangered Animals In Mangrove Forests
We are surrounded by endangered species every day. Majestic tigers grace posters on bedroom walls, stuffed toy pandas stare blankly from shopping
mall shelves; with the click of a button, we can watch the elaborate courtship rituals of whooping cranes and the strategic hunting habits of the Amur
leopard on the Discovery Channel (Bove). No matter where we look, there are signs of endangered and extinct animals that are going extinct because
of us. Habitat loss is the greatest threat to the variety of life on our planet and is overall the reason that there are less than 100 three–toed sloths left on
Earth. Confined to a single island, three–toed sloths' homes have been destroyed by humans due to deforestation in mangrove forests, making
three–toed sloths globally and critically endangered. Humans see the mangrove forests that the sloths once lived on as a threat, killing off a great
variety of species. Humans are ravaging mangrove forests when they are not only beneficial to our environment but are the homes of many critically
endangered animals, including the sloth. Even though mangrove forests are seen a waste of space, mangrove forests should be reserved for the wildlife
because a large variety of species are going extinct due to human folly, including thethree–toed sloth. This biome has been reduced to 7% of its
original extent and the remaining forests are highly fragmented (Washington).More than 35% of the world's mangroves are already gone. The figure is

From June to October the Philippine Islands are sometimes struck by typhoons, which sometimes cause great damage. The Philippines have very many
mineral and forest resources. The principal minerals are gold, copper, iron, chromite, manganese, salt, and coal. Other minerals found here include
silver, lead, mercury, limestone, petroleum, nickel, and uranium. Forests cover 23% of the Philippines. Some of these trees are the banyan, many
different kinds of palm, and many indigenous trees with extremely hard wood such as apitong, yacal, lauan, camagГіn, ipil, white and red narra, and
mayapis. Bamboo, cinnamon cloves, and pepper plants grow wild, and so does many other kinds of orchid. One of the most valuable plants is the
abaca, a plantain, and the fiber that is used to make cordage, textiles, and hats. Mangrove trees and nipa palms grow in coastal swamps.
Considerable areas of the uplands are covered by coarse grasses, of little value, for cattle. Few mammals are found on the islands, but there are
many reptiles. The islands also have 556 species of birds. Coastal waters are filled with marine life, mainly mollusks, which the Philippines are well

The Lemur and the Gibbon Essay
Where did we come from? A question that will always be asked by every human on this planet. Some say that we are of God's creation and some
say that we have gone through a long process called evolution and that humans and apes share a single common ancestor. Here I am going to
compare and contrast between two of my favorite types of animals: The Lemur and the Gibbon. What is a Lemur? Ask someone that question and
you'll be surprised how silly the answer may be. From being a fruit to a body part, it is sad how the general public does not know that the Lemur one
of our oldest primates, an order which includes monkeys, apes, and us humans. There are about 32 different types of lemurs on our planet today. They

Some of them have rings on their tails and are called Ring Tailed Lemurs. They live mostly in trees and are quadrupedal. They use their hands and
tails to get from one tree to the other and they live in groups from 3 to 20. And the female lemur is dominant.
Lemurs are known to be very intelligent. They are highly adaptable to our climate and conditions. They eat a lot
and try to get a bit fat before the harsh winter arrives. And they have a cool excellent sense of balance.      But since
humans arrived in Madagascar some 1,500 years ago they have been endangered. Sixteen different species of lemurs have gone extinct because of
habitat destruction to hunting by humans. I personally think its very unfair because these gentle non aggressive animals were their before humans and
even before monkeys. Prosimians first appeared about 55 million years ago while apes been around for only 35 million years. In 1987, World Wildlife
International declared that the lemurs are the most gravely endangered group of primates in the world.      The Gibbon
is a truly unique animal. Gibbons are anthropoids like humans and gorillas. They look somewhat like the Lemur but it has special features that make it
different from the Lemur.      Gibbons apes come from Southeast Asia and the island of the Philippines. Some people

The Ebola Virus Essay
In the year 1976, Ebola climbed out of its unknown hiding place, and caused the death of 340 people. Fear gripped the victims' faces, and uncertainty
tortured their minds. The people of Zaire waited outside clinics, churches and in their homes for a treatment of the horrible disease, but there was no
cure. They were forced to watch people die, hoping that they would be saved from the violent death of the Ebola virus. From the year of 1976 to the
present date of 1996, researchers have searched for origin and cure of the virus. Scientist have carried out numerous studies and investigations, but no
one has been able to find the right explanations.

Ebola can spread by the reuse of hypodermic needles, which occurs frequently in underdeveloped countries like Zaire and Sudan, but it is unlikely to
become infected by close contact with persons infected who show no symptoms. The Ebola virus spreads through the blood and is replicated in organs,
including the liver, lymphatic organs, and kidneys. The central lesions appear to be those affecting the vascular endothelium and the platelets.
The resulting symptoms are bleeding, especially in the nose, abdomen, and pericardium. Capillary leakage appears to lead to loss of intravascular
volume, bleeding, shock and the acute respiratory disorder seen in fatal cases. Patients basically die of intractable shock. Those with severe illness
often have fevers and are delirious, combative and difficult to control. Some victims of the Ebola virus, one out of ten people infected, survive the
virus's deadly operations. Due to its self–limiting nature, the Ebola virus is known to sometimes die out within a person before killing the host
organism. Just like the history of wars and other social epidemics, the Ebola outbreaks need to be remembered and learned from.
The first two Ebola outbreaks were in 1976, in the countries of Zaire and western Sudan. These were large outbreaks, resulting in more than 550 cases
and 340 deaths. In 1979, Ebola mysteriously appeared in

Primate Diet Adaptations : Primates
Primate Diet Adaptations Primates are some of the best–adapted animals in the planet. Throughout time their dentition has evolved into different
patterns and forms, best fitted for their environment. From the early prosimians, to the modern men, the changes are a prime example of how diverse
primates are. Throughout primate evolution, the changes in diet can be correlated with the changes in dentition patterns; however, dentition pattern can
be different between male and female, and hold other purposes.
GRADE I – LEMUROIDS Lemuroids are prosimians dating back to as early as 65 million years ago (Larsen). They were the primates present during
the Paleocene epoch of the Cenozoic era (Larsen). Having many attributes that pertain to the early primates they help give an insight to the evolution of
dentition within early primates (Doyle). This helps understand the fore coming other grades of primates dentition; for example, tarsiers, monkeys, apes
and hominids. Present Lemuroids are present in the island of Madagascar, off the shores of the African continent (Doyle). Their dentition pattern has
what is known as a toothcomb (Larsen). They posses a pattern of two front incisors, 1 canine, three premolars, and three molars on both top and
bottom. The two bottom incisors, and canines are long, finely spaced and procumbent, to facilitate the grooming of the coat (Doyle). Lemurs are
arboreal adapted. They spend most of their time on trees wit the exception of the ring–tailed

Waste Reduction, Or Waste Prevention
Kyle Yue

Engineering 1 T.4, P.3/4
29 April 2015
Technology Sector Report
Waste reduction, or waste prevention, is critical in today's growing world population. In a society with so many people, and an ever–growing
population, resources need to be saved and used sparingly. Waste reduction is a method of managing the waste created and how it is disposed of.
Waste reduction means that less waste is produced, which equals less waste removal costs, and helps keep the environment clean. Waste reduction can
be achieved through the using of less plastic and other similar materials that get thrown into landfills, and by using every–day, reusable objects, such as
water bottles and silverware, instead of plastic bottles and plastic utensils. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Granulators are similar to grinders, but they take already–reduced pieces of material and make the pieces even smaller, allowing recycling these
once–large pieces of wood to be a lot easier. A more unique method is to use a compactor which compresses waste so that the waste takes up a
smaller area, and therefore, less space. Compactors are used at recycling centers and junkyards to reduce the area that solid waste takes up.
The idea of waste reduction began long before modern machines were put to use. In 1908, A.A. Low created the first paper shredder: the "Waste
Paper Receptacle" but was never put to commercial manufacturing because he never had the incentive to do so. The first paper shredder put to sale
actually came in 1936, when German Adolf Ehinger produced the first commercial paper shredder. In 1921, the world's first geothermal power plant
was built in California. In 1965, the first federal solid waste management law, the Solid Waste Disposal Act, was authorized by Congress. On April 22,
1970, the U.S. celebrated the first annual Earth Day. Later that year, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created. In 1972,
Washington state started the first buy–back recycling center, accepting newspapers, beer bottles, and aluminum cans. This buy–back recycling center
led to the ones that would give people money for their recyclable products, giving people an incentive to recycle more often. The U.S.

Coral Reef Research Paper
Living and raised in the Philippines has affected me to nurture and explore more about the ocean. For instance, when my family took me on
vacation to travel another island, we rode a boat and I would always gaze at the clear ocean and observe a school of fish or the structure of coral
reefs. The more curious I was about the ocean life, the more I researched about it. However, when I migrated to the United States, since my parents
wanted me to have a better life and opportunity in education, limited my access to the sea. But I studied hard based on academics for my parents in
order to have a better career and help them by paying their bills or taking care of them as they age. This pushed my interest away from the ocean, until
my family took me to the Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the world. After reminiscing my childhood and the passion for the ocean, I

Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment.
I.Introduction
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection affecting both humans and animals. It is acquired through direct contact with the urine of infected animals or by
contact with a urine–contaminated environment such as floodwater, soil, and plants. The bacteria enter the body through broken skins, eyes, nose or
mouth.
As of October 26, the Department of Health (DOH) has recorded a total of 2,158 cases including 167 deaths. Leptospirosis cases in Metro Manila have
increased by as much as 174 percent since last year. Leptospirosis cases reached its peak from October 14 to 19, with hospitals reporting up to 350

During the Egyptian campaign, Napoleon's army suffered from what was probably infectious jaundice. Infectious jaundice occurred among troops
during the American Civil War.It was also reported among troops at Gallipoli and other battles of World War I, where the sodden conditions of trench
warfare favored infection. Terms used in early 20th century descriptions of leptospirosis include the pseudo–dengue of Java, seven–day fever, autumn
fever, Akiyama disease, and marsh or swamp fever. L icterohaemorrhagieae was identified as the causative agent in Pre
–World War II outbreaks in
Japan, which were characterized by jaundice and a high mortality rate.
In October 2010 British rower Andy Holmes died after contracting Weil's disease.
Causes
Leptospirosis is caused by a spirochaete bacterium called Leptospira spp. that has at least 5 serovars of importance in the United States and Canada
causing disease in dogs (Icterohaemorrhagiae, Canicola, Pomona, Grippotyphosa, and Bratislava).
There are other (less common) infectious strains. Genetically different leptospira organisms may be identical serologically and vice versa.

islands is known as a stratovolcanic archipelago. An archipelago is a cluster of islands that are usually volcanic and occurs in subduction zones. Japan
is in the crossroads of four different tectonic plates – the Pacific plate, the Philippine plate, the Eurasian plate and the North American, and due to the
plate movement and subduction of all these plates land mass has been created. The subduction of the Pacific plate resulted in Japan being pulled

familiarise you with the animals so that the rest of the course makes some sort of sense. I will cover a working definition of what makes a primate,
give you a general classification scheme, describe the major features that identify the groups within the classification and discuss some of the
controversial areas of the classification. I shall treat the taxonomy as a synonym for classification which seems to be its commonest current usage,
although you should be aware that some people consider taxonomy to be more about the principles behind the classification than the classification itself.

Obviously there is a huge amount of variation in gross skull shape across the mammalian class, but certainly, on average, primate skulls tend to be
short. Elaboration of the visual apparatus, with the development of varying degrees of binocular vision. Orbits ringed with bone. Figure 6 also
shows the characteristic morphology of the primate orbit. The eyes face forward for binoccular region, the eyes tend to be quite large, and the orbit is
either a fully enclosed cup (as in the chimp in figure 6) or a lateral post–orbital bar (as in the aye–aye). In most other mammals (for example the bear
and kangaroo), the eye is simply plastered onto the side of the skull and held in place by soft tissue. Page 6 of 21 Primate Taxonomy Reduction of the
olfactory apparatus The reduction in the size of the snout and the increased reliance on vision has also led to a relative reduction in the olfactory
apparatus compared to many other mammals. This is again apparent from figure 6 and is associated with the reduction in size of the snout. Loss of
certain elements of the primitive mammalian dentition. Preservation of a simple

Essay on Varying Patterns of Speciation
Varying Patterns of Speciation
Wallace's line, located in the Malay–Archipelago, is one of the best known and most studied boundaries of zoogeography in the world. It is a
transition zone between the islands of Borneo and Sulawesi and the islands of Bali and Lombork, which marks both the convergence and division of
the diverse flora and fauna found in the Asian (Borneo, The Philippines, and Western Indonesia), and theAustralian regions (Sulawesi, Eastern
Indonesia, Australia, and New Guinea) (Schulte 2003). The hypothetical line was first proposed by Alfred Russel Wallace in 1858 after observing
many morphological differences of various bird species in the Asian and Australian regions (Raven 1935). In the past, to confirm the... Show more

Around 140 million years ago India separated from the still connected South America–African and Antarctica–Australian landmasses and drifted
northward until it collided with Eurasia (Europe and Asia). This collision created a continental block which caused a separation of the
Antarctica–Australia landmass and caused the individual landmasses to shift in opposite directions (Whitmore 1981). This separation formed an
underwater ocean ridge, which caused Australia to drift northwestward. Around 15 million years ago, Australia converged with Asia, uniting the
diverse flora and fauna of both regions (Schulte 2003; Whitmore 1981). It was then the continuous separation of these two landmasses that has
dynamically shaped the present–day distribution of unique ecosystems and species found on the Asian and Australian continents, as well as on the
islands in the Malay–Archipelago.
When Wallace drew his hypothetical line to define the boundary between Asian and Australian zoology, he had an incomplete understanding of
continental drift and plate tectonics. He only used morphological observations of cockatoos found on Lombork and Bali, and of parrots found on
Borneo and Sulawesi, to support the placement of his line

Essay On Plastic Pollution
Plastic Pollution
People tend to take plastic for granted. It's everywhere, from bags to water bottles to toys to machine parts. About 300 million tons of plastic is
produced in the world each year, which is about the weight of all the adults on the planet. More has been produced in the last decade than in all of
history until 2000. Last year alone, people around the world used over 50 billion disposable water bottles and around 1 trillion plastic bags. All the waste
must go somewhere, though, and unfortunately, that somewhere is usually our oceans. People can help reduce the amount of plastic ocean pollution
and prevent the destruction of the world's ecosystems and the poisoning of seafood by taking simple steps like recycling, limiting plastic use, buying
from more sustainable companies, and participating in cleanup events.
Plastic ocean pollution leads to devastating consequences for the ecosystems and wildlife. It is responsible for the deaths of about 1 million
seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals each year. Fish ingest 12000 to 24000 tons of it per year, 97.5% of all documented Laysan Albatrosses have
plastic in their stomachs, and one out of three species of marine mammals have been found caught in plastic debris. ("Ocean Plastics Pollution").
Plastic pollutes our soil and water and releases fragments and toxins during photodecomposition. It is nonbiodegradable, taking at least four hundred
years to break down. It can serve as a means for transportation of invasive species to new areas, which leads to imbalance in the food chains.
Additionally, it is very expensive to clean up and eats away at the beauty of natural landscapes.
Plastic is increasingly finding its way into the world ocean and now constitutes over 40% of its surface. Only about 10 percent of all plastic
produced is recycled each year, and about 8 million tons ends up in our oceans ( "The Facts"). Shorelines around the world, especially around China,
Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam are littered with plastic trash and other flotsam. Trash in the ocean is also swept up by currents and
clumped together to form gigantic gyres. There are potentially 11 gyres of plastic in the five major oceans around the world. The Great Pacific

The Boon and Bane of Nuclear Power Plants

  • 1. Boon and Bane of Nuclear Power Introduction In these modern times, are nuclear power plants feasible to every nation around the world? How about in a nation experiencing the toll of depletion of resources, destruction of nature and poverty at the same time; is it still an answer for economic growth? Is the construction of nuclear power plants an aid for the spur of development of a country or a growing threat to the environment? Do nuclear power plants serve the people best or destroy the nature best? Nuclear power plants are said to have drastic effects both good and bad for a country where it will be used for. Surely it will increase the supply of energy of each country; this will contribute more to the economic productivity of the served country. However, it is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The turbine then spins a generator to produce power. In some nuclear power plants, a secondary heat exchanger is used to convert another loop of water to steam, which drives the turbine. The Boons of a Nuclear Power Plant Energy Until about 1800, the principal fuel was wood. Since the Industrial Revolution, fossil fuels are the major source of energy. When a fossil fuel is burned, atoms of hydrogen and carbon combine with oxygen atoms in air. Water and carbon dioxide are produced and heat is released, equivalent to about 1.6 kilowatt–hours per kilogram or about 10 electron volts per atom of carbon. This amount of energy is typical of chemical reactions resulting from changes in the electronic structure of the atoms. A part of the energy released as heat keeps the adjacent fuel hot enough to keep the reaction going. In comparison, a nuclear fission reaction releases 10 million times the energy released in using fossil fuels. Nuclear energy is released when the fission of a heavy nucleus such as п‚ЇU is induced by the absorption of a neutron A fission of an atom produces about 200 MeV, or 3.2 Г — 10–11 J. The energy per fission is very large. In practical units, the fission of a 1 kg uranium–235 releases 18.7 million kilowatt–hours as heat. The neutrons released from fission of one atom cause the fission of two more atoms, thereby releasing more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Human Cloning Ethical Concerns on Human Cloning Human cloning, one of the most fascinating chapters in scientific history. Cloning goes back to the first mammal that was successfully cloned, Dolly the sheep. Dolly was duplicated on July 5, 1996 and since then the world has had many scientific advancements. Abby Norman, author of "How Close Are We to SuccessfullyCloning our First Human" said that other types of mammals such as goats, rats, pigs, mice, and rabbits have been cloned successfully but cloning other mammals and primates may not be so easy. Scientists are not yet able to successfully clone a human, but believe they will be able to do so by the 2020s. (Norman) Along with such a controversial topic there comes many who would agree that copying a human would be beneficial while on the opposing side some would argue that replicating someone's genes is ethically wrong. Cloning is a very important topic and according to the President's Council on Bioethics, "The prospect of cloning–to–produce–children, which would be a radically new form of procreation, raises deep concerns about identity and individuality, the meaning of having children, the difference between procreation and manufacture, and the relationship between the generations" ("Human Cloning and Human Dignity: An Ethical Inquiry", 2017). Although useful for studying genetic diseases, human cloning produces issues as to whether it should be allowed or not because some believe the copy will have the same personality and ... • 3. Environmental Effects Of Overfishing With the knowledge that high demand over seafood are being abused worldwide, what can we do to restore the current damage of our marine ecosystem. As we face the consequences of overfishing, many people are unaware that our aquatic food chain are currently collapsing up to ninety percent; possibly ending it all in year of two thousand forty three if we do not make a change in our ways (Pauly 861). These numbers are not an exasperation and they are increasing. Only one percent of most species are recovering from depletion (861). As the caregiver of our world, we must not choose to turn our backs on the question, "Will we still be able to save our reefs?". Instead we must embrace it. The history of overfishing recorded started in the eighteenth century when the whale species were poached for their blubber to make lamp oil, their meat, and collect their bones to carve as tools (Marrero 69). Later on in the century when fossil fuel was discovered, it became more popular and reliable than whale oil. Resulting in the whaling industry to plummet; left at least eight whale species endangered (69). Today whaling is illegal in the United States, but are still going on in Japan and Norway to be used for scientific study purposes and a source of food (69). Putting these beautiful mammals dangerously close to extinction for our own selfish reasons. With the modern world improving on their technologies, so are the ways of capturing fish deeper in the pacific oceans. Today boats ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay on Whispering in the Giants Ear by William Powers Williams Powers, an ecotourist activist wrote in his book, Whispering in the Giants Ear, "That which we allow to exist, to flourish freely according to its own rhythms, is superior to anything our little hands create." Ecotourism is defined as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well–being of local people." Economical Impact Ecotourism plays a vital role in a nations economy. Many factors entail whether a country can be successful economically. Ecotourism has thrived and failed, depending on how it was operated. Once a country accepts money from their government to begin ecotourism, they will be forever in debt. When the governments fronts the money, the government is in control.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was concerning to the government, but unlike the Philippines, the Costa Rican government agreed with the locals to invest and trust in ecotourism for a decade. After nine years, in 1973, Costa Rica had broke even. In 1974 they made over ten million. Ever since 1974, profits had come in exponentially. From 1974 to 1994 over six hundred million was brought in. In 1999 for the first time in Costa Rican history over one million ecotourists came to Costa Rica. They brought in over one billion in revenue. Many speculate that the Philippines were on the same track, but the lack of communication between the government and people proved catastrophic. Costa Rica is known as the focal point for ecotourism worldwide. Ecotourism began in Costa Rica in the 1970's. It was very small and began to grow exponentially in the late 1980's. In 1970 Costa Rica had a GNP, gross national product of 1000 million in 1995 that number nonuple to 9000 million. Many consider 1978 the first year ecotourism began in Costa Rica. At that time, Costa Rica had a GNP/capita of 1500. After the ecotourism boom, the number ballooned to 2000 in 1992. It is evident by the 33% increase in GNP/capita that ecotourism was a positive influence economically on Costa Rica. Another key problem is that the economic benefit of ecotourism does not always reach the local community. One of ecotourisms main goals is to help the local community generate domestic employment and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Solution Of Plastic Pollution Plastic pollution makes up the majority of pollution problems all over the world, on land and off land. There are few solutions to fixing this pollution problem overall because of plastic properties. The pollution in the ocean poses a great problem to marine ecosystems, and to the health of the human population due to its durability. Over the years the consumption of plastic products has risen a marginal amount making the issue of pollution even larger ("When the Mermaids Cry: The Great Plastic Tide"). The pollution causes damage to the economy, environment, marine life, human health, along with the global impact. If the plastic pollution problem does not decrease, or completely disappear, then there will be great consequences in the oceans and on land. Plastic is a non biodegradable material that is made to last forever, yet only about 50% of plastic products are used once then thrown away. (Plastic Oceans Foundation). The world uses 300 million tons of plastic every year for various uses, "Plastic is cheap and incredibly versatile with properties that make it ideal for many applications" (Plastic Oceans Foundation). Every few seconds humans are producing about 20,000 plastic bottles and "a million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute and the number will jump another 20% by 2021, creating an environmental crisis some campaigners predict will be as serious as climate change." (Laville, Sandra, and Matthew Taylor). With the way the world is going with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Its etymology and language of origin are uncertain. It appears to be one of the most ancient of recorded names. A number of theories have been published. English Asia can be traced through the formation of English literature to Latin literature, where it has the same form, Asia. Whether all uses and all forms of the name derive also from the Latin of the Roman Empire is much less certain. What made me choose these non– human primates so interesting was the uniqueness and appearance of each primate. I plan to explain the similarities of their teeth structure and purposes and the similarities of their diet and feeding and also the differences of their behaviors. Mandrills are extremely colorful, perhaps more so than any other mammal. They also have extremely long canine teeth that can be used for self–defense though baring them is typically a friendly gesture among mandrills. These are primarily terrestrial monkeys, and they move with long arms to move on the ground for fruits, roots, ... Guns Germs And Steel Summary Cassidy Elibol Prologue In the prologue of Jared Diamond's book, Guns, Germs, and Steel, Diamond introduces readers to a question posed to him by Yali, a New Guinean politician. Yali inquired about the reason for different developmental rates of civilizations, and Diamond, who couldn't explain at the time, began to search for the answer. Diamond links certain "power factors," such as advanced weaponry, certain diseases, and metal tools, to the rate of advancement in civilizations. However, the causes for the creation and use of the "power factors" in some civilizations, but not others, remains an unsolved mystery. First, Diamond talks about a few ways that disease can spread. One way is by waiting to be transferred between victims. For example, microbes that travel on food are contracted this way. Another passive way of transmission is by surviving in insect saliva and then passing to a host when the insect bites. Disease can also spread in aggressive ways, for example, some microbes change their host's body so transmission is accelerated. Smallpox uses this technique by forming skin lesions. Microbes can also travel amongst people by forcing infected individuals to cough or sneeze, which in effect shoots the microbes toward other host bodies. Next, the author lists the efforts of the human body to expel the disease. For instance, a fever is one way a body can rid itself of microbes, specifically heat–sensitive ones. Other times, blood cells will hunt down and exterminate disease–causing organisms, and build up resistance to that organism in case it ever reenters the body. The final and slowest defense Diamond lists is natural selection. Humans with genes for resistance live longer and pass on the traits, creating more individuals who can survive against a certain ... This means that the oil can last for decades causing a lot of problems for marine life, water quality, human health and livelihood. Effects on Water Quality Water is a liquid that every living creature needs in order to survive. How does oil affect our ocean? In Ogoniland Nigeria, the people there have dealt with nearly 50 years of oil production and water contamination. This caused confusion in whether it was safe to drink this kind of water or eat this kind of fish. Commotion over little things are being argued about or doubted. This is what an oil spill does to us and our life. When oil spills happen, oil contaminates the water making it difficult for fishermen to fish. Just like the incident that happened in Manila Bay where the authorities were forced to ban fishing for the safety of all the people. This accident jeopardized the fishermen's means of survival. Also, water contamination reduces water quality. Oil poisons the water and the creatures inhabiting it. Plants are also affected by the reduction of water quality because the reduction of water quality will ultimately lead to the halting of photosynthesis Besides, when oil spill occurs, there are long–term effects.

Animals move for a variety of reasons such as: to find food, a mate, a habitat to live in, or to escape predators. It is important for animals to develop new abilities and traits to accomplish these necessities of living. Natural selection has shaped the locomotion methods and mechanisms used by moving organisms for millions of years. Generally, non–human primates are studied to garner an understanding of evolution caused by natural selection because of the many distinctive adaptations that have occurred within their taxonomic order. To understand the origin of locomotion that exist amongst primates, the two categories of primates must be analyzed to recognize morphological trait differences. Domestication Of Bananas And Plantain Katie Twyman May 28th, 2015 PLB 143: Gepts Domestication of Bananas and Plantain (Musa spp.) Abstract Bananas and plantains (Musa spp.) are one of the major staple foods in the world. In 2006 the estimated world production of bananas was 80.6 million tons while 16.8 tons were traded (Cohen, 2011). Although bananas are common today, the origins of thebanana are complex and occurred over thousands of years during multiple stages. Archeologists focused on the Kuk Valley of New Guininea, the area where the domestication of bananas supposedly took place around 8,000 BCE (Before Common Era) (Bot, 2007). The study of banana history has been difficult because banana pollen and seeds were rare or absent at archaeological sites. It wasn't until recent technologies and the use of multi–disciplinary research that we could gain a better understanding. Genetics and linguistic studies also help in understanding the banana origin (Hirst, 2015). Diploid and triploid forms of bananas have been identified and their distribution throughout the world is a key piece of evidence in unlocking the truth about banana domestication. Introduction The banana (Musa spp.) is a large perennial herb with leaf sheaths that form their pseudostems, meaning they are rather giant herbs than trees. • 30. Animals : Ended And Endangered Animals In Mangrove Forests We are surrounded by endangered species every day. Majestic tigers grace posters on bedroom walls, stuffed toy pandas stare blankly from shopping mall shelves; with the click of a button, we can watch the elaborate courtship rituals of whooping cranes and the strategic hunting habits of the Amur leopard on the Discovery Channel (Bove). No matter where we look, there are signs of endangered and extinct animals that are going extinct because of us. Habitat loss is the greatest threat to the variety of life on our planet and is overall the reason that there are less than 100 three–toed sloths left on Earth. Confined to a single island, three–toed sloths' homes have been destroyed by humans due to deforestation in mangrove forests, making three–toed sloths globally and critically endangered. Humans see the mangrove forests that the sloths once lived on as a threat, killing off a great variety of species. Humans are ravaging mangrove forests when they are not only beneficial to our environment but are the homes of many critically endangered animals, including the sloth. Even though mangrove forests are seen a waste of space, mangrove forests should be reserved for the wildlife because a large variety of species are going extinct due to human folly, including thethree–toed sloth. This biome has been reduced to 7% of its original extent and the remaining forests are highly fragmented (Washington).More than 35% of the world's mangroves are already gone. Other minerals found here include silver, lead, mercury, limestone, petroleum, nickel, and uranium. Forests cover 23% of the Philippines. Some of these trees are the banyan, many different kinds of palm, and many indigenous trees with extremely hard wood such as apitong, yacal, lauan, camagГіn, ipil, white and red narra, and mayapis. Bamboo, cinnamon cloves, and pepper plants grow wild, and so does many other kinds of orchid. One of the most valuable plants is the abaca, a plantain, and the fiber that is used to make cordage, textiles, and hats. Mangrove trees and nipa palms grow in coastal swamps. Considerable areas of the uplands are covered by coarse grasses, of little value, for cattle. Few mammals are found on the islands, but there are many reptiles. The islands also have 556 species of birds. Coastal waters are filled with marine life, mainly mollusks, which the Philippines are well known for. There are huge amounts of pearl oysters around the Sulu Archipelago. About 32% of the land is farmland. In the northern islands the soils are mainly originated from volcanic rock. • 32. The Lemur and the Gibbon Essay Where did we come from? A question that will always be asked by every human on this planet. Some say that we are of God's creation and some say that we have gone through a long process called evolution and that humans and apes share a single common ancestor. Here I am going to compare and contrast between two of my favorite types of animals: The Lemur and the Gibbon. What is a Lemur? Ask someone that question and you'll be surprised how silly the answer may be. From being a fruit to a body part, it is sad how the general public does not know that the Lemur one of our oldest primates, an order which includes monkeys, apes, and us humans. There are about 32 different types of lemurs on our planet today. They originated from Madagascar, a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of them have rings on their tails and are called Ring Tailed Lemurs. They live mostly in trees and are quadrupedal. They use their hands and tails to get from one tree to the other and they live in groups from 3 to 20. And the female lemur is dominant.      Lemurs are known to be very intelligent. They are highly adaptable to our climate and conditions. They eat a lot and try to get a bit fat before the harsh winter arrives. And they have a cool excellent sense of balance.      But since humans arrived in Madagascar some 1,500 years ago they have been endangered. Sixteen different species of lemurs have gone extinct because of habitat destruction to hunting by humans. I personally think its very unfair because these gentle non aggressive animals were their before humans and even before monkeys. Prosimians first appeared about 55 million years ago while apes been around for only 35 million years. In 1987, World Wildlife International declared that the lemurs are the most gravely endangered group of primates in the world.      The Gibbon is a truly unique animal. Gibbons are anthropoids like humans and gorillas. They look somewhat like the Lemur but it has special features that make it different from the Lemur.      Gibbons apes come from Southeast Asia and the island of the Philippines. Fear gripped the victims' faces, and uncertainty tortured their minds. The people of Zaire waited outside clinics, churches and in their homes for a treatment of the horrible disease, but there was no cure. They were forced to watch people die, hoping that they would be saved from the violent death of the Ebola virus. From the year of 1976 to the present date of 1996, researchers have searched for origin and cure of the virus. Scientist have carried out numerous studies and investigations, but no one has been able to find the right explanations. Ebola can spread by the reuse of hypodermic needles, which occurs frequently in underdeveloped countries like Zaire and Sudan, but it is unlikely to become infected by close contact with persons infected who show no symptoms. The Ebola virus spreads through the blood and is replicated in organs, including the liver, lymphatic organs, and kidneys. The central lesions appear to be those affecting the vascular endothelium and the platelets. The resulting symptoms are bleeding, especially in the nose, abdomen, and pericardium. Capillary leakage appears to lead to loss of intravascular volume, bleeding, shock and the acute respiratory disorder seen in fatal cases. Patients basically die of intractable shock. Those with severe illness often have fevers and are delirious, combative and difficult to control. Some victims of the Ebola virus, one out of ten people infected, survive the virus's deadly operations. Due to its self–limiting nature, the Ebola virus is known to sometimes die out within a person before killing the host organism. Just like the history of wars and other social epidemics, the Ebola outbreaks need to be remembered and learned from. Throughout time their dentition has evolved into different patterns and forms, best fitted for their environment. From the early prosimians, to the modern men, the changes are a prime example of how diverse primates are. Throughout primate evolution, the changes in diet can be correlated with the changes in dentition patterns; however, dentition pattern can be different between male and female, and hold other purposes. GRADE I – LEMUROIDS Lemuroids are prosimians dating back to as early as 65 million years ago (Larsen). They were the primates present during the Paleocene epoch of the Cenozoic era (Larsen). Having many attributes that pertain to the early primates they help give an insight to the evolution of dentition within early primates (Doyle). This helps understand the fore coming other grades of primates dentition; for example, tarsiers, monkeys, apes and hominids. Present Lemuroids are present in the island of Madagascar, off the shores of the African continent (Doyle). Their dentition pattern has what is known as a toothcomb (Larsen). They posses a pattern of two front incisors, 1 canine, three premolars, and three molars on both top and bottom. The two bottom incisors, and canines are long, finely spaced and procumbent, to facilitate the grooming of the coat (Doyle). Lemurs are arboreal adapted. • 37. Waste Reduction, Or Waste Prevention Kyle Yue Walker Engineering 1 T.4, P.3/4 29 April 2015 Technology Sector Report Waste reduction, or waste prevention, is critical in today's growing world population. In a society with so many people, and an ever–growing population, resources need to be saved and used sparingly. Waste reduction is a method of managing the waste created and how it is disposed of. Waste reduction means that less waste is produced, which equals less waste removal costs, and helps keep the environment clean. Waste reduction can be achieved through the using of less plastic and other similar materials that get thrown into landfills, and by using every–day, reusable objects, such as water bottles and silverware, instead of plastic bottles and plastic utensils. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Granulators are similar to grinders, but they take already–reduced pieces of material and make the pieces even smaller, allowing recycling these once–large pieces of wood to be a lot easier. A more unique method is to use a compactor which compresses waste so that the waste takes up a smaller area, and therefore, less space. Compactors are used at recycling centers and junkyards to reduce the area that solid waste takes up. The idea of waste reduction began long before modern machines were put to use. In 1908, A.A. Low created the first paper shredder: the "Waste Paper Receptacle" but was never put to commercial manufacturing because he never had the incentive to do so. The first paper shredder put to sale actually came in 1936, when German Adolf Ehinger produced the first commercial paper shredder. In 1921, the world's first geothermal power plant was built in California. In 1965, the first federal solid waste management law, the Solid Waste Disposal Act, was authorized by Congress. On April 22, 1970, the U.S. celebrated the first annual Earth Day. Later that year, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created. In 1972, Washington state started the first buy–back recycling center, accepting newspapers, beer bottles, and aluminum cans. This buy–back recycling center led to the ones that would give people money for their recyclable products, giving people an incentive to recycle more often. The U.S. ... For instance, when my family took me on vacation to travel another island, we rode a boat and I would always gaze at the clear ocean and observe a school of fish or the structure of coral reefs. The more curious I was about the ocean life, the more I researched about it. However, when I migrated to the United States, since my parents wanted me to have a better life and opportunity in education, limited my access to the sea. But I studied hard based on academics for my parents in order to have a better career and help them by paying their bills or taking care of them as they age. This pushed my interest away from the ocean, until my family took me to the Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the world. According to Dr. Joseph Pedron, a resident veterinarian of Manila Zoo, the first zoos were made in order for the affluent and aristocrats to exhibit their authority, wealth, power, and pets (personal communication, March 16, 2016). As time went by, people became more engrossed by all these creatures and they gradually wanted to understand and know the animals in a deeper level. Primate Evolution Primate Taxonomy Primate Taxonomy Introduction This first lecture is designed to introduce the primate order in terms of its classification and to familiarise you with the animals so that the rest of the course makes some sort of sense. I will cover a working definition of what makes a primate, give you a general classification scheme, describe the major features that identify the groups within the classification and discuss some of the controversial areas of the classification. I shall treat the taxonomy as a synonym for classification which seems to be its commonest current usage, although you should be aware that some people consider taxonomy to be more about the principles behind the classification than the classification itself. ... Elaboration of the visual apparatus, with the development of varying degrees of binocular vision. Orbits ringed with bone. Figure 6 also shows the characteristic morphology of the primate orbit. Around 140 million years ago India separated from the still connected South America–African and Antarctica–Australian landmasses and drifted northward until it collided with Eurasia (Europe and Asia). This collision created a continental block which caused a separation of the Antarctica–Australia landmass and caused the individual landmasses to shift in opposite directions (Whitmore 1981). This separation formed an underwater ocean ridge, which caused Australia to drift northwestward. Around 15 million years ago, Australia converged with Asia, uniting the diverse flora and fauna of both regions (Schulte 2003; Whitmore 1981). It was then the continuous separation of these two landmasses that has dynamically shaped the present–day distribution of unique ecosystems and species found on the Asian and Australian continents, as well as on the islands in the Malay–Archipelago. When Wallace drew his hypothetical line to define the boundary between Asian and Australian zoology, he had an incomplete understanding of continental drift and plate tectonics. • 44. Essay On Plastic Pollution Plastic Pollution People tend to take plastic for granted. It's everywhere, from bags to water bottles to toys to machine parts. About 300 million tons of plastic is produced in the world each year, which is about the weight of all the adults on the planet. More has been produced in the last decade than in all of history until 2000. Last year alone, people around the world used over 50 billion disposable water bottles and around 1 trillion plastic bags. All the waste must go somewhere, though, and unfortunately, that somewhere is usually our oceans. People can help reduce the amount of plastic ocean pollution and prevent the destruction of the world's ecosystems and the poisoning of seafood by taking simple steps like recycling, limiting plastic use, buying from more sustainable companies, and participating in cleanup events. Plastic ocean pollution leads to devastating consequences for the ecosystems and wildlife. It is responsible for the deaths of about 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals each year. Fish ingest 12000 to 24000 tons of it per year, 97.5% of all documented Laysan Albatrosses have plastic in their stomachs, and one out of three species of marine mammals have been found caught in plastic debris. ("Ocean Plastics Pollution"). Plastic pollutes our soil and water and releases fragments and toxins during photodecomposition. It is nonbiodegradable, taking at least four hundred years to break down. Only about 10 percent of all plastic produced is recycled each year, and about 8 million tons ends up in our oceans ( "The Facts"). Shorelines around the world, especially around China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam are littered with plastic trash and other flotsam. Trash in the ocean is also swept up by currents and clumped together to form gigantic gyres. There are potentially 11 gyres of plastic in the five major oceans around the world. The Great Pacific ...
