Book: Aftershock Author: Kelly Easton
Summary       Aftershock by Kelly Easton is a pretty depressing book because the Adam lost both of his parents at the same time without any warning but in a shock. Adam portrayed his journey walking out of his parent`s death in a hard way. He became mute after the death scene, where they were in a car and crashed into a deer. It is very interesting how the author put Adam’s journey into pieces of puzzles. In between a story of him in school with the bullies or with his girlfriend, he sort of randomly adds in his memory of car accident which shows he can’t let go. Luckily at the end Adam find a way out and free himself by thinking of the roads ahead of him and stop those depressive remembrances. He struggles to survive as he devours a frozen pizza found in a taxidermist's cabin, sleeps in a Dumpster, crashes a picnic, and steals a car. The adventures intertwine with thoughts about his girlfriend, locker-room antics, his parents, their bookstore, and his autistic cousin-spontaneously, as if his mind has short-circuited from the crash. Adam, though still mute, arrives home emotionally ready to accept his parents' death.
Character Development      Adam is the main character in the book, he has the most going for him and its not so great. He is a normal teenage boy with a great life; love, care, shelter, everything he could want and it is taken away by the accident. This makes Adam see not through just his eyes but through his thoughts and actions. He has to make many decisions on his own after this day.
Literary Element Quotes that I thought had an impact on my reading were.    “ Human beings are so depressing.” This quote is one of my favorites just because of how much discussion could come of it. The reality in this quote shows just how much our society has changed since the 1900's it used to be all about friendship and loving ur family, having game nights and other things. Now its all about being in a relationship with someone for a week tops or being depressed because you saw the person your crushing on with another person. Now a days there are just to many things we get upset over.
Literary Element      There might be different ways of being dead. Like there are different ways of believing God.” This quote to me was interesting because it isn't really true but gives off a good meaning. Different ways of being dead; when ur dead ur beginning a new life that's how I look at it. There possibly are different ways to believe in god but I don't think so, I think Believing in god is a single action thing an that's exactly how I take it into perspective.
Theme       What I would categorize this book in would be "suspense" because all of the actions take place un expectedly and make major changes to the setting or the phase of the book. It pretty much changes the entire plot all throughout the book making that certain urge to wait for the next interesting thing to happen.
Media Literacy This relates to my book because in the movie this old woman wants to have someone to love in her life (Her Romeo) and so she wrote a letter explaining her problem and after 30 years it is found and fulfilled, showing that there is always hope. This is a movie about not just love but hope; hope for survival of our emotions. They hurt us in the worst ways possible but there is always a person that can help you get over all of your problems rather it be a lover, a stranger, yourself , or maybe even God. This movie also shows that there is always hope in our lives no matter how big the problem is.
Personal Reflection This book effected the way I look at my problems. Not the little ones that I shouldn’t care about but my life crisis problems. In the book Aftershock Adam shows bravery and courage which should influence any reader to have an entire different mind over everything they believed in. Recommendation A person that would enjoy this book is someone you doesn’t feel Happy with their life. Meaning if they are doubtful about their Choices in life they need to be positive that they can make choices On there own an not just keep listening to the higher person. Not being Able to connect with others of the same age group is sometimes a reason For theses aspects.
