1. The BFG
The BFG was written by Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake and
published by Puffin. This book is aimed at children aged 7-11, or more
specifically 9-11, to help children build their reading skills. The story is traditional
lit, containing Mythical beasts such as giants.
This book has large blocks of text, even full pages, using a serif font and large
spacing’s, more complicated language also occasionally using italic text.
The text tends to stay normal, straight lines and the same font.
Using some illustration, these illustrations help the child to understand
what is going on easier, they are black and white, water colour illustrations.
These images usually follow a short paragraph at the bottom of the page
This book used rigid, rough looking drawings that use water colour to demonstrate
what is happening in the story.
This book has 224 pages, as this is a book for 7-11 year olds, and the pages are
12.9 x 19.8 cm. As this book is mostly aimed at older children, with more advanced
reading and using less imagery, I don’t think that I will use this page size.
Quentin Blake
“I do a freewheeling sort of drawing that looks as though it is done on the spur of the moment.
However even a single drawing needs a certain amount of preparation and planning.”

Blake does a rough sketch to find how the character stands, their expressions, and
how to fit the onto the page. He uses the rough copy, on top of a light box, covered
by water colour paper and draws an improved version on the top layer, with
waterproof ink, followed by using water colours to colour the image.
2. The Gruffalo
The Gruffalo is a children's book authored by Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler,
published by Macmillan children's books. It is aimed at children between the ages of 3-7, but mainly
5-7. this book doesn’t contain much text, but the text it does have tends to be in small paragraphs,
using a simple serif font, and the story uses rhyming couplets to make it easier for young children.
The story contains traditional lit, as the story uses a mythical being that is able to talk. This book is
32 pages long, 700 words and is 21.7 x 26.9 cm. I think this page size is ideal to give enough room
for the writing and the illustrations. The illustrations used are digital images that could have possibly
being a digitized drawing that was covered over in Photoshop and colourized.
3. The Tiger That Came To Tea
The tiger that came to tea is a book authored and illustrated by
Judith Kerr and published by Harper Collins Childrens Books. It is
aimed at children aged between 5 to 7 years old.
This book contains small amounts of text, that has appears in
small paragraphs. This book uses a medium sized serif font, to
help the child with their reading. The illustrations are large, and
simple, they help show a child what is going on if they cant read.
The story itself is traditional
lit, using anthropomorphism
by letting the tiger act as a
human would and
personifying the tiger.
The book has 32 pages, and
the page size is 22 x 28 cm. it
uses hand drawn illustrations
and no digital art.
The book has a simple layout
and uses a white background
to make it easier for a
younger child to define and
read the text.
