Many people we ‘know’ about, we will never shake hands with. So, representation becomes very important: how things are represented in the media and in our education.

It argues that higher education should go beyond just imparting knowledge and focus on developing understanding, abilities, and attitudes in students. Specifically, it says higher education should help foster intercultural dialogue and competencies for dialogue across disciplines, communities, and societies. TAEC ASEMUS 2012 Presentation
The Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre (TAEC) is an independent, non-profit museum dedicated to promoting the appreciation and preservation of cultural diversity in Lao PDR. Like most museums, TAEC maintains a collection of artefacts, curates exhibitions, and promotes scholarship and learning through research and outreach activities. However, TAEC is also a museum representing living cultures in a developing country context, and as such faces a unique set of challenges for which it has developed specific approaches.
In a country with low education levels and a lack of museum and non-traditional learning opportunities, simply drawing in Lao visitors and creating a meaningful experience for them requires creativity and active visitor management. TAEC has developed a range of activities for children visiting the museum and also conducts sessions in schools to broaden its reach. Attracting adults has remained more elusive. To facilitate the building of further cultural heritage resources in Laos, TAEC conducts capacity-building activities for government staff of museums, NGO workers, and tourism professionals.
TAEC’s most challenging but meaningful objective is to promote cultural pride and revitalisation within ethnic minority communities themselves. TAEC has explored approaches including an ethnic minority intern programme, collaborative exhibition development with villages, and an ethnic cultural festival. Recognising that rural ethnic communities are amongst Laos’ poorest populations, TAEC also runs a handicrafts development programme, generating income for over 600 artisans in 11 provinces of the country.
TAEC views all these approaches (and others) as part of its education and advocacy programmes, and crucial to the sustainability of the organisation, its mission, and cultural heritage management itself. The challenge is how to progress from simply educating local populations to understand and value the idea of cultural diversity, to adopting the task of fostering cultural diversity, and finally, to taking leadership in their own communities to tackle their specific cultural heritage issues through home-grown approaches.

If Truth and Reconciliation are to be meaningful then Decolonization has to be more than a metaphor. Thunder Bay Public Library (TBPL) is committed to recentering the Indigenous world view. Our work is led and guided by an Indigenous Advisory Council (IAC) which represents the needs of Thunder Bay’s Indigenous community. Working with our Indigenous staff, the IAC recommended that TBPL establish Indigenous Knowledge Centres (IKC) in all of our libraries. These collections contain materials that authentically reflect Indigenous knowledge, culture and history.
These collections are not classified by the Dewey Decimal Scheme which represents a European linear interpretation of knowledge in which every book can have only one place on the shelves. Instead they are categorized using subject headings such as Land, Water and Women which reflect an Indigenous circular view of the world in which everything is interconnected. The purpose of these IKC’s is to ensure that Indigenous culture and history is reflected in the collection of TBPL. They are places where Indigenous people can learn about their traditional customs and languages. Many Indigenous people were cut off from their past by colonial practices such as Residential Schools which were intended to ‘kill the Indian within the child’. The consequence of these genocidal policies has become evident with the discovery of unmarked graves at Residential Schools across Canada. In addition, the IKCs are a resource that non Indigenous people can use to learn about the history of Canada that they were not taught in school.
Linguapax presentation
Linguapax is a non-governmental organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion linguistic diversity worldwide. It was created in 2001 to give continuity to a series of workshops and international meetings focused on the promotion of plurilingual education. Its main aim, synthesized in its name, is to rally linguistic communities worldwide around the belief that languages, as essential vehicles of identity and cultural expression are inseparable from the goals peace and intercultural understanding. Linguapax develops activities along three major lines: consultations to state and substate language policy makers, collaboration in language revitalization and standardization projects on behalf of minority language communities; and elaboration of teaching materials advocating the values of linguistic and cultural diversity. Linguapax has its headquarters in Barcelona.

CILIP Working Internationally for Libraries Conference was a one-day virtual event supported by Arts Council England, in partnership with Libraries Connected, British Library, British Council, Carnegie UK Trust, CILIP International Libraries & Information Group, and CILIP Public & Mobile Libraries Group. The 2021 Conference explored ways of connecting with library services and sector professionals from across the world to inspire and inform local library services. Speakers from a diverse range of regions – UK, Europe, Canada, Africa, and the Middle East - shared best practices, new ideas, and successful examples of international working projects.

Toronto is a very multicultural city and has a long history of welcoming newcomers to settle in the city. This session explores the ways in which Toronto Public Library helps newcomers integrate into Canadian society with particular focus on the arrival of Syrian refugees in recent years.

Ip youth engagements in local community development
