Bolt fastener
1. Bolt Fastener
Bolt
A bolt is a sort of threaded fastener with AN external male thread. The distinction between a bolt and a
screw is unclear and commonly misunderstood. There are many sensible variations, but most have
some degree of overlap between bolts and screws.Bolts are for the assembly of unthreaded parts, with
the aid of a nut. Screws in contrast ar used with parts, at least one amongst which contains its own
internal thread, which even might be shaped by the installation of the screw itself. Many rib fasteners
will be delineate as either screws or bolts, depending on however they’re used.Bolts are typically used
to create a locked joint. This is a mixture of the nut applying an axial clamping force and conjointly the
shank of the bolt acting as a fastening, pinning the joint against sideways shear forces. For this reason,
many bolts have a plain unthreaded shank (called the grip length) as this makes for a higher, stronger
dowel. The presence of the unthreaded shank has often been given as characteristic of bolts vs.
screws, but this is attendant its use, rather than defining.Where a fastener forms its own thread in the
part being fixed, it is called a screw. This is most obviously therefore once the thread is tapered (i.e.
traditional wood screws), precluding the use of a nut,or when a sheet metal screw or different thread-
forming screw is employed.
Bolt heads
Bolts use a wide form of head designs, as do screws. These are designed to interact with the tool wont
to tighten them. Some bolt heads instead lock the bolt in place, so that it doesn’t move and a tool is
simply needed for the nut end.The first bolts had square heads, formed by forging. These are still
found, although much more common today is the hexagonal head. These are held and turned by a
spanner or wrench, of which there are many forms. Most are held from the side, some from in-line with
the bolt.

2. Types of Bolts
Anchor bolt
An anchor bolt is a fastener used to attach objects The simplest anchor bolt is a cast-in-place anchor.
As seen in the figure, most designs consist of a standard bolt with a hexagonal head, which is cast in
the wet concrete before it sets. There are other designs, some consisting of a bent bolt with a hook on
the end, or some other sort of bending. Cast-in-place anchor bolts are the strongest type of fastener, but
the casting is difficult, and they are usually only used for heavy machines mounted on poured concrete
floors. Another use of this anchor bolt is to connect the concrete foundation of a building to its wall.
With this, the building is more resistant to earthquakes. Currently there are several devices to assist in
holding and in placing anchor bolt to set in the concrete. These devices are mostly made from
composite plastic
Carriage bolt
A carriage bolt, coach bolt or round head square neck bolt Carriage bolts are extensively used in
security fixings, such as the Brenton Bolt where the bolt should solely be removable from one facet.
The smooth vaulted head and nut below stop the bolt from being unsecured from the insecure facet.

3. Timber bolts
Closely related to carriage bolts ar timber bolts, meant for use with large wood planks and structures.
They have a domed head that’s proportionately wider than that of a bolt, and instead of a square section
of shank underneath the pinnacle, they have four sharp-cornered fillets that grip the sting of the outlet
within the wood to stop rotation. They are conjointly called mushroom head bolts or dome head bolts.
They are wont to fasten wood to wood, instead of metal to wood.
Plough bolts
Plough bolts most quickly wearing half of the plough and would get replaced many times over the
lifetime of the plough.Such bolts continue to be wont to hold shovels onto cultivators.
