Thesis Statement: Bob Marley's life affected his writing and contributed to the development of his
poetry.
Bob Marley is without a doubt the greatest musician a third world country ever produced. Through
Rastafari ideas, he influenced many others with songs that touched the lives of millions with his
constant message of unity. His wisdom through experience helped him achieve a grand distinction
over other artists.
In the year 1944, Captain Norvol Marley, a middle–aged white marine officer, married a young
Jamaican girl named Cedilla Booker. On February 6, 1945 at two thirty in the morning their son,

The band was introduced to Clemet Dodd, a producer of the record company, Coxsone. It was here
where the Wailing Wailers recorded the first song "Simmer Down" which did quite well in Jamaica.
To help with the recording of their songs the studio provided several talented Ska musicians. The
Wailing Wailers were consisting now of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh andBunny who were starting to
become quite popular locally. Their audiences rapidly grew and they recorded several more songs
on the Coxsone label, which included "It Hurts To Be Alone" and "Rule the Roadie". Bob soon took
on the role of the leader, being the main songwriter.
The next day after his marriage Bob left for the United States to visit his mother who lived in
Delaware. While in North America he worked to better finance his music and soon returned home.
When Bob Marley returned the Wailing Wailers' music evolved from Ska to Rock Steady. This
evolution conflicted with Coxsone who wanted a Sim band. So the new Wailing Wailers left
Coxsone to form and renamed themselves the Wailers.
Instead of looking around for a new label the Wailers decided to form their own which they called
Wail n' Soul. They released a couple singles on their label such as "Bend Down Low" and
"Mellow Mood" before Wail n' Soul folded the very same year. The ending of their label affected

While reading Catch a Fire I discovered many things about Bob Marley and his spiritual influence
on the world. Not only just making records, Marley spoke to his people through his songs and took
advantage of the opportunities given to him as a musician.
Born on February 6, 1945, Robert Nesta Marley grew up in a small village in Jamaica called Nine
Miles, where he would shape his personality and early beliefs. His father Norval Marley, a white
Jamaican and a Captain in the Army, would also become inspirational to young Bob. When Bob

female back up vocalists called the I–Threes, one of whom would eventually become his wife Rita.
In Jamaica at the time Bob was viewed as a mystic and prophet, and was becoming the symbol for a
nation. Seeking re–election the Prime Minister asked Bob Marley to stage a free concert on the
same day as the National election, trying to lock up the support of the Marley followers and in turn
the election. This move however resulted in an attempt to end Marley's life.
On the evening of December 3, a number of gunmen arrived at Bob's house on 56 Hope Road and
shot Bob, his wife Rita, and his manager. The gunmen were thought to be the henchmen of the
opposition leader Edward Seaga. Luckily nobody was killed and Bob went ahead with the planned
concert rebelliously appearing with his arm in a sling. The following year during a massive
European concert Bob Marley was diagnosed with melanoma cancer in his big toe, the result of a
neglected football injury.
Later in Jamaica, Bob once again received a request from the political leaders to perform a peace
concert in his native land. Not phased by earlier tragedy he agreed and assembled one of the

effect on your body and psyche. In fact, there's a growing field of health care known as music
therapy, which uses music to heal." F. If you guys didn't know, Bob Marley died from cancer in
1981. When he was first diagnosed with cancer while he was still on tour and one thing that stunned
the doctors and his family was how bad the cancer had spread and how he was still not only walking
but also performing. According to many theorists it was the music that kept him going!
If this music helped Bob Marley to survive for so long with cancer then I am positive this music can

The resistance continued when they were put on ships for Jamaica and America. The Africans
were forced from their homes, families, and forced to live a life without freedom. They continued
to fight after their arrival. The song Buffalo soldier helps many learn the way history truly
happened. Jamaicans are still affected by past injustices (Dorsey 5). The majority of this population
are the descendants of African slaves, forced to leave their villages some two hundred years ago to
labor on Jamaican plantations for white masters.

Reggae music was unheard of in the United States and in other countries until Bob Marley. Bob
Marley's records elevated the music industry producing an island sound that consisted of
syncopated rhythms and pizzicato guitar melodies. Bob's career lasted almost 20 years from the
year 1962 until his untimely death in 1981. People are still inspired by his work today and his

from Jamaica in the form of reggae music. It was 1963 when a young man from Jamaica by the
name of Robert Nesta Marley, better known as "Bob Marley", formed a band called The Wailers,

third world country. The country of Jamaica had just gained independence from the U.K. in 1962,

So the Jamaican sound systems, mobile devices such as vans or musical equipment on wheels,
would be used to host dances, and the deejays would also use their sound systems to inform his
listeners on political happenings. King states that, "As one of the few affordable social activities
for the poor, the sound system brought music to places where the voice of the poor could be
heard without interference by local authorities" (16). Like most of the world during this time, the
black population was not allowed any political power, and many began to seek ways to resist.
One of the methods used as a means to passively fight back against the imbalance was the
Rastafarian religion. The Rastafarian religion was born early in the twentieth century, but its roots
date back as far as the late 1800's when slaves felt compelled to revolt against the plantation
owners on the belief that God was calling them to fight for freedom. In 1927, a man named
Marcus Garvey brought forth to Jamaicans the basis of the Rastafarian religion, which was to look
to Africa for the crowning of a king. This would be a sign for Jamaica that freedom is near. From
Africana, the Encyclopedia of the African and the African–American Experience, author Roanne
Edwards quotes Garvey: "Look to Africa for the crowning of a king to know that your redemption is
nigh" (Edwards 1592). In 1930 Ras Tafari was crowned emperor of Ethiopia and baptized with the
name Haile Selassie.

Blackwell went for it instantly for he had heard of The Wailers and gave them eight thousand
pounds so they could get back home and record their album for Island Records.
This was the first time a reggae band had ever had access to premium recording facility. They
worked hard knowing this was their big chance and released the album "Catch Fire", which did
extremely well and was one of the first reggae albums as of before it was sold on singles or
compilation albums.
In the spring of 1973 the Wailers returned to London to start their first three month tour of Britain.
When they returned to Jamaica, Bunny decided to quit touring and was replaced by Joe Higgs.
The Wailers then traveled to the US where they were to open 17 shows for a black act. They were
fired after 4 because the people came to see the Wailers and not the act. The crowds would often
chant "Wailers" throughout. They once again found themselves without any money and method
home, but this time in Las Vegas. They eventually stumbled into San Francisco and while there they

mother came from a very respectable black family called the Malcolms. They were farmers and
known well to be hardworking and clean people. When she told her father that she was pregnant,
he was furious and he felt even worse when she told him that the father of her child was Captain
Norval Marley of the English East Indian Regiment. The Marleys were white Jamaicans who were
