This document analyzes blood typing results for 4 patients: Ms. Brown, Mr. Jones, Mr. Green, and Mrs. Smith. It summarizes the agglutination results for anti-A serum, anti-B serum, and anti-Rh serum for each patient. Based on these results, it determines each patient's blood type. It also discusses which blood types each patient could safely receive in a transfusion and whose blood each could safely donate.
The adolescent ward of Hillcrest Sunrise Hospital wasn’t so bad. The food was decent. I had friends and things to do. Among the depressives, the suicidals, the pot smokers, the bulimics and anorexics, the white girls who dated black guys, the atheists, the queers and the borderline schitzos, I was in good company. The freaks and rejects of small town Alabama were my kind of people.

1) Choose one of the following patients:
a) Mr. Smith, Mr. Jones, Mr. Green, Ms. Brown= Ms. Brown
b) Using the information shown in Figure 1 on Blood type and the data recorded in Table 1, What
agglutinogens are present on the patient’s RBC’s? homozygenousresessive
c) What ABO agglutinin(s) is/are found in the patient’s Plasma? A and B
d) What is the patient’s blood type? O negative
e) If this patient needed a transfusion, what blood type(s) could this patient safely receive? Type O
f) What blood type(s) could safely receive this patient’s blood? All other blood types
2) Below is the information representing the blood type analysis of a new patient (patient X). From the
information obtained, fill out the medical technologist report.
A: Agglutination Medical technologist’s report
B: No Agglutination ABO Type: O
Rh: Agglutination Rh Type: negative
3) Compare and Contrast agglutinogens and agglutinins. In the diagram show at least 2 similarities and
2 differences.
Agglutinogens Agglutinins
Differences Similarities Differences
2. Substances found on the Both found in blood Antibodies found in the plasma
surface
4) Pretend you went with your class on a medical career field trip to a local hospital. One of the stops
on the visit was to the hospital’s blood lab. The medical technologist at this stop gave a
demonstration of how blood types are determined. Your job is to write a paragraph for the school
newspaper on the visit to the blood lab, summarizing what you’ve learned about how ABO/Rh blood
groups are determined. Write a paragraph and include the title.
ABO Blood RH Blood: The RH blood determines whether or not the ABO blood is positive or
negative. The human blood types which are A, B, AB and O are inherited by multiple alleles.
Antigens were found in human re blood cells. They were called C, c, D, d, E, e. Individuals who
possesses these antigens is designated Rh+, and individual who lacks them is designated Rh-.
5) List at least 3 situations where blood typing could be used.
a) Blood transfusion
b) Organ transplant
c) Antibody screen and crossmatch on a bleeding patient.
6) Define Erythroblastosis Fetalis. Severe anemia in newborn babies. Occurs when the child of Rh-
negative mother inherits Rh-positive bloof form the father.
a) Describe the sequence of events that lead to this condition. The mother transmits antibody
through the placenta that harms developing blood cells causing the fetus to suffer from blood
disorders or even death.
b) What might be some benefits if the medical profession developed a shot or vaccination that
could desensitize an Rh+ situation? The shot could make the baby more or less immune to the
antibody which result in less fetal death.
7) You are a type A eryhthorocyte placing an ad in the personals and you are seeking a compatible
mate for a long lasting transfusion. Create an ad to be submitted to the newspaper.
Wanted: Type “A” BLOOD for transfusion! Will accept any doner who is Type A or Type O (Universal
Doner). Please call 555-1264
8) Another important diagnostic tool used by medical technologist is determining a patient’s blood cell
count, for both red blood cells and white blood cells. When this procedure is performed, one
technique used is to take multiple samples and calculate the average. This method of multiple
sampling is a standard procedure in scientific and medical investigations. Discuss why this method is
important in blood typing. It is important because when testing blood you want multiple blood
samples to make sure you get the most accuret product.
9) Each year thousands of people contract blood borne diseases. What could be done in a clinical
blood lab to minimize the risk of obtaining or spreading a blood borne disease?Wear lab apron,
gloves, safety goggles, test the blood to make sure it’s not contaminated, mask
3. 10) In a short paragraph, identify what you think may be the next important breakthrough, milestone or
discovery in the study of blood and blood diseases and explain why. How to multiply blood cells to
create an organism with the same blood almost as if it was a clone!
