Block chain 101 what it is, why it mattersPaul Brody
The Blockchain is an important new technology, but it is shrouded in mystery: what does it do? Why is it such a big deal? How is it related to bitcoin? In this short presentation (with attached video), I attempt to answer those questions.
Hands-on introduction to blockchain technologies.
First, basic concepts as peer-to-peer networks, mining and distributed consens are introduced basd on the Bitcoin protocol. Next smart contracts are discussed for the Ethereum protocol and demonstrated using a local/private blockchain.
The session concludes with a live demo of the interaction of a Java based classical business application with a smart contract running in the Ethereum network.
The goal of the session is to provide a meaningful background of blockchain technologies in genral and to enable developers to start exploring Ethereum and smart contracts within a few hours.
The proposed development setup is oriented towards Java developers and contains Docker images for the Geth and TestRPC Ethereum clients that can be run locally. To access Ethereum from Java the web3j Java library is used. The business application that integrates with the smart contracts is built with the Eclipse Scout framework.

- What is blockchain and how is it related to bitcoin?
- What is Ethereum, the second-generation of blockchain
By allowing digital information to be distributed but not copied, blockchain technology created the backbone of a new type of internet. Originally devised for the digital currency, Bitcoin, the tech community is now finding other potential uses for the Blockchain technology.
Ethereum, 2nd generation blockchain technology, is an open source blockchain project that was built specifically to realize the coding of simple contracts on distributed ledgers. Still in its early stages, Ethereum has the potential to leverage the usefulness of blockchain on a truly worldchanging scale.

Blockchain Smart Contracts - getting from hype to reality Capgemini
The potential of smart contracts – programmable contracts that automatically execute when pre-defined conditions are met – is the subject of much debate and discussion in the financial services industry. Smart contracts, enabled by blockchain or distributed ledgers, have been held up as a cure for many of the problems associated with traditional financial contracts, which are simply not geared up for the digital age. Reliance on physical documents leads to delays, inefficiencies and increases exposure to errors and fraud. Financial intermediaries, while providing interoperability for the
finance system and reducing risk, create overhead costs for and increase compliance requirements.
In this report, we aim to cut through the speculation and hype around the potential of smart contracts. We have conducted detailed discussions with financial services industry professionals, prominent smart contract startups and academics (see Research Methodology at the end of this paper). Our study confirms that smart contract adoption will lead to reduced risks, lower administration and service costs, and more efficient business processes across all major segments of the financial services industry. These benefits will accrue from technology, process redesign as well as from fundamental changes in operating models, as they require a group of firms to share a common view of the contract between trading parties. Consumers will benefit from more competitive products, such as mortgage loans and insurance policies, along with simpler processes that are free of many of the hassles of today’s customer experience.

Blockchain: The Information Technology of the FutureMelanie Swan
The blockchain concept may be one of the most transformative ideas to impact the world since the Internet. Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin are merely one application of the blockchain concept. The blockchain is a public transaction ledger built in a decentralized network structure based on cryptographic principles so that any kind of trading, buying and selling of assets does not need to go through a centralized intermediary. Any kind of asset may be encoded into the blockchain and transacted, validated, or preserved in a much more efficient manner than at present including ideas, health data, financial assets, automobiles, and government documents. Venture Capitalists are calling the blockchain the next big investment wave.

When Thomas Edison invented the electric lamp in 1879, he did not make a market analysis. The market did not have an identified need for a lamp but for light. This is a kind of disruptive original ideas.
Satoshi Nakamoto (a person or a group) did not do a market analysis neither . The blockchain was born after the financial crisis of 2008 as people lost trust in banks.
Satoshi Nakamoto introduced a new model of trust based on cryptographic proof in a decentralised & distributed ledger.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.
Hybrid optimization of pumped hydro system and solar- Engr. Abdul-Azeez.pdffxintegritypublishin
Advancements in technology unveil a myriad of electrical and electronic breakthroughs geared towards efficiently harnessing limited resources to meet human energy demands. The optimization of hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems plays a pivotal role in utilizing natural resources effectively. This initiative not only benefits humanity but also fosters environmental sustainability. The study investigated the design optimization of these hybrid systems, focusing on understanding solar radiation patterns, identifying geographical influences on solar radiation, formulating a mathematical model for system optimization, and determining the optimal configuration of PV panels and pumped hydro storage. Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions. Additionally, the study provides valuable insights for advancing energy research in economically viable areas. Recommendations included conducting site-specific assessments, utilizing advanced modeling tools, implementing regular maintenance protocols, and enhancing communication among system components.

4. Ledger
A general ledger contains all the accounts for
recording transactions relating to a company's
assets, liabilities, owners' equity, revenue, and
expenses.
Purpose: To have financial statement
5. Double spendingByzantine Generals Problem
More generally, the B.G.P. poses the question
of how to establish trust between otherwise
unrelated parties over an untrusted network
like the Internet.
The problem to be solved is:
● All loyal generals need to decide upon
the same plan of action.
● A small number of traitors cannot cause
the loyal generals to adopt a bad plan.
6. Bitcoin
In October 2008, “Satoshi Nakamoto” published a paper describing the bitcoin
digital currency. In January 2009, Nakamoto released the first bitcoin software
that launched the network and the first units of the bitcoin cryptocurrency,
called bitcoins.
7. Distributed ledger - Blockchain
The block chain is a shared public ledger on which the entire Bitcoin network
relies. All confirmed transactions are included in the block chain. This way,
Bitcoin wallets can calculate their spendable balance and new transactions
can be verified to be spending bitcoins that are actually owned by the spender.
8. A mysterious new technology emerges, seemingly out of nowhere, but actually the
result of two decades of intense research and development by nearly anonymous
researchers.
...
Eventually mainstream products, companies and industries emerge to commercialize
it; its effects become profound; and later, many people wonder why its powerful
promise wasn’t more obvious from the start.
...
What technology am I talking about? Personal computers in 1975, the Internet in 1993,
and – I believe – Bitcoin in 2014
Marc Andreesen, creator of Netscape Navigator
18. Mining - blocks
Bitcoin mining is the process that puts
transactions into a block, to make sure everyone
has a consistent view of the transaction log.
Mining is also the mechanism for new bitcoins to
enter the system. When a block is successfully
mined, new bitcoins are generated in the block
and paid to the miner.
This mining bounty is large - currently 25
bitcoins per block (~ $14,000).
23. Ethereum was initially proposed by Vitalik Buterin in late 2013 and in 2014 he described it as
"A Next-Generation Cryptocurrency and Decentralized Application Platform".
Ethereum's live blockchain was launched on 30 July 2015. The Ethereum software project was initially
developed by a Swiss company, Ethereum Switzerland GmbH (EthSuisse) and a Swiss non-profit
foundation, the Ethereum Foundation.
24. Ethereum Virtual Machine
Programmable blockchain - Rather than give
users a set of pre-defined operations (e.g.
bitcoin transactions), Ethereum allows users to
create their own operations of any complexity
they wish.
Bitcoin blockchain was purely a list of
transactions, Ethereum’s basic unit is the
account. The Ethereum blockchain tracks the
state of every account, and all state transitions
on the Ethereum blockchain are transfers of
value and information between accounts.
Platform for many different types of
decentralized blockchain applications, including
but not limited to cryptocurrencies.
25. Smart contracts
● Contracts lives on the Ethereum blockchain
● Have own Ethereum address and balance
● Can send and receive transactions
● “Activated” when you send a transaction to it
26. Smart contracts
● 4 Ethereum high level
languages
○ Solidity (similar to js)
● Compile (Mix IDE)
● Deploy (you pay for
execution gas - > eth)
● Interacting with smart
contracts
● Mining - little different than
bitcoin (few changes)
28. ETHEREUM AS A ‘WORLD
COMPUTER’
Computation on Ethereum is slow
and expensive.
(currently similar to smartphone?!)
For computation, there are better,
cheaper and faster alternatives that
don’t require blockchains and all
that.
Ethereum can create
various forms of economic
alignment, shared purpose
and coordination between
thousands of anonymous
people, at a fraction of a
cost compared to
alternatives (legal
frameworks).
Sharing economy (ex. uber,
airbnb) will be everywhere.
29. Decentralized autonomous organizations (“DAO”)
● Best comparable to a digital company, but without an attached legal entity
● The Owner (kind of admin) can add (or remove) voting members to the organization
● Any member can make a proposal (by sending transaction or execute contract)
● People vote on proposals
● Allows people to participate in risks & rewards of digital ventures

The only means of communication is by messenger sent by foot from one camp to another. Further complicating matters, not every general can be trusted to be loyal to the cause.

A Bitcoin transaction moves bitcoins between one or more inputs and outputs. Each input is a transaction and address supplying bitcoins. Each output is an address receiving bitcoin, along with the amount of bitcoins going to that address.
