During my summer internship at BECO Capital, a technology-focused Venture Capital firm based in Dubai, I put together this primer on blockchain that demystifies this hyped up technology, covers key investment trends in the space both globally and regionally within the GCC*, and highlights both the barriers and enablers for wider blockchain adoption in the region. *The GCC is the Gulf Cooperation Council - comprised of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and Oman.

Each transaction in the public ledger is verified by consensus of a majority of the participants in the system. And, once entered, information can never be erased. The blockchain contains a certain and verifiable record of every single transaction ever made. To use a basic analogy, it is easy to steal a cookie from a cookie jar, kept in a secluded place than stealing the cookie from a cookie jar kept in a marketplace, being observed by thousands of people. In the report, it distinguishes between multiple types of blockchains and explains the two biggest platforms, namely Bitcoin and Ethereum. While introducing those two platforms we explain the most important technology and algorithms used such as proof of work concept. Some of the security issues and solutions are also covered. We conclude with some concrete Ethereum based applications that demonstrate the usage of blockchain technology beyond cryptocurrency and illustrate current developments in this field.

Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.

project over others.

Blockchain is a shared, immutable ledger that facilitates
the process of recording transactions and tracking assets
in a business network.
An asset can be tangible (a house, car, cash, land) or
intangible (intellectual property, patents, copyrights,
branding).
Virtually anything of value can be tracked and traded on a
blockchain network, reducing risk and cutting costs for all
involved.
(A ledger is a book or collection of accounts in which account transactions are recorded.)
7. Step 1 – Record the transaction
A blockchain transaction shows the
movement of physical or digital assets
from one party to another in the
blockchain network. It is recorded as a
data block and can include details like
these:
• Who was involved in the transaction?
•What happened during the
transaction?
• When did the transaction occur?
8. Step 2 – Gain
consensus
•Most participants on the distributed
blockchain network must agree that
the recorded transaction is valid.
•Depending on the type of network,
rules of agreement can vary but are
typically established at the start of the
network.
9. STEP 3 –
LINK THE
BLOCKS
Once the participants have reached a
consensus, transactions on the blockchain are
written into blocks equivalent to the pages of a
ledger book.
Along with the transactions, a cryptographic
hash is also appended to the new block. The
hash acts as a chain that links the blocks
together.
This is like stacking wooden blocks to make a
