Many members of my constituent organization (NEA) suffered chronic health problems due to environmental restraints, lack of knowledge and support for changing their lifestyles as they affected their health. Members and the union staff and leadership were stressed out and wellness did not logically fit in to the core work of the union.
After numerous conversations with members and leaders about the school employee wellness problem and possible solutions I decided to partner with a union expert who was part of a health plan/health promotion organization. We co-created a plan for convening a conversation with union, district and health plan representatives to find solutions that all three groups could support.
We obtained funding from 2 sources to support a new initiative. We developed a strategy for bringing people together and leading a discussion about collaborative solutions.
This important, because this put us on a track to solve a big problem in a way that only my organization could have done. It frankly had the possibility to set a template for how to confront myriad other health problems that the members were facing. We were attacking this problem in a way that would not only contribute to the health of members, but also create value for union membership which was a high priority for NEA at this time.

- WNC is a super place to be Extension is established in the community and I will seek to strengthen our presence here I’m happy to fill in some of the programming holes that are present You’ve already integrated across program areas and county lines, so that priority of mine is already started
- I grew up in a one stoplight town in the flatlands of Eastern NC. We lived between the only fire department around with a fireman’s pole and a 10 acre, diversified farm. I went off to the big city of Durham for my Jr and Sr years of High School and since I did well in Science and Math I figured I’d be an engineer No one could tell me what an engineer did, so I thought about what I really wanted to do - be outside and help people. I remembered my father getting advice on growing a garden and other things from the Extension office, so into Extension I went. Fear struck me as I thought about helping a farmer with choices that could affect their family’s livelihood so I stuck around for two more years. I’m currently pursuing my Doctorate and will be at it for a few more years. As for life outside of the ivory tower, here are some things that apply to this position
- “ Your reports are well written and convey all the important details, where you’re not meeting my expectations is professional scheduling let’s talk for a moment about how to bring that up a little bit.” Maintain appropriate confidentiality
- Review our home page regularly when we meet together – not every time, but regularly
- The manager isn’t the only leader in a team. When anyone influences the thoughts or actions of another, they are leading on some level and in some direction.
- Comm Probs: individually since it is not a face to face media, not even a voice to voice media. These are just words taken largely out of context, but management communication problems get exaggerated here as well. Crackberry addictions and full in boxes and constant ding reminders place the messenger and message in greater position than the origin.
- Our organization’s culture and effectiveness can change dramatically as these transitions take place. That is another reason I want to be in this role: to be a part of the renewal.
