Coretta Scott King established the King Center in Atlanta, Georgia to continue the work of her late husband Martin Luther King Jr. and promote nonviolent social change. She traveled internationally advocating for human rights, establishing educational and cultural exchange programs between the U.S. and Africa in particular. She founded the International Peace Center and worked with the United Nations, speaking out against apartheid. Coretta Scott King worked tirelessly to establish a national holiday in honor of Dr. King and was a strong voice for justice and equality until her death in 2006.
