United Way Provides Fundraising Assistance For Tulare
County Charities
• The United way assists charities from all over the
country with procuring the funding they require to
keep their doors open and continue their mission.
No where is the work of the United Way more
practically demonstrated that in Tulare County,
California.
• According to a recent article in the Visalia Times-
Delta, the United Way supports 20 of the 126
charities currently at work in Tulare County. Located
in southern California near Sequoia National Park,
Tulare County is a largely agricultural area with a
relatively low population. Because of this, there is a
great deal of competition between non-profits for
the community’s donation dollars.
• This is where the United Way comes in. For
nonprofits with a history of good credit and a strong
relationship within the community, the organization
with provide fundraising support. Local Tulare
nonprofits include The Boy Scouts of America, Arts
Visalia and Court Appointed Special Advocates.
• This summer, the United Way of Tulare County will
hold a firework sale from June 28 until July 4 to
benefit local charity. The sale will be held publicly
at a local Rite Aid at and staffed by 100 volunteers.
Each day a different charity will be represented and
the proceeds from that sale will benefit them. It is
estimated that the sale could raise up to $10,000
for local charity.
• The United Way raises money through events such
as the fireworks sales, but it completes most of
their operations through donations solicited through
campaigns held at workplaces. Workers from
participating businesses support local charities
through automatic payroll deductions. More than 50
employers in Tulare County, including private
businesses and government offices on the local,
state and federal level, contribute through the
payroll deductions program.
• “Tulare County is generous to a fault,” said Delores
Mayfield, a representative of the United Way, “They
give until it hurts.”
