Bisacodyl is a contact laxative that acts directly on the colonic mucosa to stimulate peristalsis. It is poorly absorbed and usually produces a bowel movement 6 hours after oral administration or 15 minutes to 1 hour after rectal administration. Bisacodyl is useful for treating various types of constipation and can be used as a bowel cleanser prior to procedures. Common side effects include stomach pain, cramping, nausea, diarrhea, or weakness.
