What all these companies have in common is that they are adding analytics into their products to either…
Create a competitive advantage
Improve their user experience – to help with either customer retention and additional upsell opportunities
Increase profits through – either by creating a net new revenue stream or by cutting costs that they would otherwise spend on report development for their customers
Or a combination of these
Sound Bite: CBS Interactive is the largest e-commerce content syndicator in the world. They syndicate ads for 10 million products from 12,000 suppliers. Using Birst, CBSi grew its pipeline by 2.5X (from $10M to $30M) and successfully built a private ad network of $25M by utilizing comparative analysis (for example, analyzing A-B content tests at a deeper level).
Roles: CBSi customers (brand managers, digital marketers)Use Case: Embedded AnalyticsData Sources: HadoopValue: 2.5X Pipeline Growth and building a private ad network of $25M
Full Story:
CBS Interactive is largest e-commerce content syndicator in the world. They syndicate ads for the likes of Lenovo laptops on major websites like Buy.com, newegg, amazon, etc. With a platform that processes over $3B in e-commerce sales each year, CBS Interactive needed a solution that could provide analytics on a massive scale. With web clickstream data on ads for over 10 million products from 12,000 manufacturers, CBS Interactive was not only dealing with massive volumes of data, but also data that was changing rapidly (ad placement, message, offer, price, promotion changes). In addition, because they represented competitive products and manufacturers CBS required strict data privacy and security rules.
With Birst, CBS has been able to serve all its customers in a single place. Birst pulls over a TB of data from 20 node Hadoop cluster & and this volumes grows ~ 1% growth daily. CBS Interactive is able to process and aggregate 10 million web events in under 5 minutes.
CBS provides this analysis back to their customers so they can understand how engaging their content is, how long customers stay on the page and how often they click buy. The results: click thru rates has improved by 10% for CBS’s customers.
With Birst, CBSi was able to grow their pipeline by 2.5X (from $10M to $30M) and successfully built a private ad network of $25M by utilizing comparative analysis (for example, analyzing A-B content tests at a deeper level). CBSi also was able to retain a high at-risk syndication deal (Sony), worth $750K, which alone paid for more than 5 years of Birst. This was accomplished, in part, by enabling Sony to build out value-added dashboards to analyze who watched their product videos and what % were watched entirely. Also, Sony was able to improve customer service levels while saving headcount by 20%, allowing them to re-focus 2 out of 10 FTE on more strategic activities.
CBS Interactive selected Birst, because of its scalable solution and also the ability to go from test environments to production in minutes. This feature served the dynamic nature of ad placement (A-B testing different scenarios, seeing the impact and iterating), keeping CBS in a competitive position in content syndication market.
Valen offers the InsureRight Platform to enable Property and Casualty Insurance carriers with predictive analytics at the point of underwriting commercial auto, workers compensation and home owner policies. Valen’s predictive analytics helps underwriters evaluate prospective terms for commercial and personal lines insurance policies. The scoring process provides an underwriter with an assessment of risk for the specific policy they are underwriting.
Valen is using Birst to generate Valen’s InsureRight Reports which contain the results of their predictive scoring process and comparison (predictive modeling / scoring is not done with Birst). Valen also uses Birst to provide a set of portfolio management dashboards that highlight the performance, adoption, and influence of predictive analytics across a carrier’s entire book of business.
While early adopters of Valen’s solutions focused on real-time transaction-level predictive scores to assess risk, it didn’t take long for Valen’s customers to begin looking for ways to measure the impact of adopting predictive analytics across their portfolio. Even though Valen had always provided reports to its customers, these were traditional and static. To provide managers, executives and underwriters new ways to interact with information, Valen chose Birst.
Today Valen is embedding / white-labeling Birst into its predictive analytic platform, InsureRight.
Valen opted to deploy an on premise appliance version of Birst due to the data governance and security policies that they have with their customers.
Valen is also using Birst Live Access because they needed real-time access to predictive scoring transactions. The Live Access environment accesses transactional data from a PostgreDB.
Valen is deploying 3 appliances across 3 different servers to support development-test-production deployment pipeline and is using the automatics test-to-dev capabilities of Birst (CopySpace & SwapSpace) to automate the process.
Valen was able to develop its prototype dashboards and reports and get validation/feedback from the market in just 1 month. They then began using these prototypes in sales discussions with prospects and existing customers. Valen fully integrated their Predict reporting with Birst and went to production 2 months later. Valen’s 2nd product, Valen Manage (also Birst rebranded), followed a couple of months later.
Valen’s implementation of analytics was incorporated into the existing workload of 1 release engineer, 2 data engineers, 1 dashboard/report developer, and 1 product strategist. Valen did not have to increase staff to embed Birst into their application but instead was able to deliver their market goals and acquire new customers.
