Introduction
Cell is the smallest basic unit of life
Cell provide structure of the body

01
Functions of cells
Gives the body structure
Produce energy
Differences between:
● An animal cell does not have
a cell wall.
● Smaller in size
● Animal cells have
centrosomes.
● Animal cells have cilia
● A plant cell is surrounded by
a rigid cell wall.
● Larger in size
● . Plant cells do not have cilia.
● Presence of a large vacuole
is seen in plant cells.
Animals Cells Plants Cells
—Warren Lewis
Were the various types of cells to lose their stickiness for one another and for the supporting
extracellular matrix, our bodies would at once disintegrate and flow off into the ground in a mixed
stream of cells."
Microscope
Microscope is a laboratory instrument
used to observe very tiny objects. Most
laboratory has a magnification about
200 times, but some give a
magnification of over 1000 times.
Parts
Cytoplasm
Cytoplasm is a water jelly that fills most of each animal cell. It can move around inside the cell. The cytoplasm may
contain stored food in the form of grains. Most of the chemical reactions that keep cell alive take place in the
cytoplasm.
Nucleus
Control all cell activities.
Cell membrane
Cell membrane has tiny holes in it called pores substances such as food, oxygen and carbon dioxide can pass
through the cell membrane. Some harmful chemicals are stopped from entering the cell by the membrane
Mitochondria
Mitochondria are tiny structures in the cytoplasm, it can be found everywhere in the cells . It gives the cell energy.
It is helping the cell to keep alive. Mitochondria produces ATP(adenosine triphosphate)
Cell wall
The cell wall is found outside the membrane of a plant cell. It is made of cellulose, which is a tough material that
gives support to the cell.
Chloroplast
Chloroplast are found in the cytoplasm of many plant cell. It contain a green pigment, which traps a small amount
of energy in sunlight. This energy is used by the plant to make food. Chloroplast are found in many leaf cells and in
the stem cells of some plants.
Sap vacuole
The vacuole is a large space in the cytoplasm of a plant cell that is filled with a liquid, called cell sap, the liquid
pushes outwards on the cell wall and gives it support. If the plant is short of water, the support is lost and the plant
wilts. It helps maintain water balance.
Golgi apparatus or Golgi body
Process and helps package proteins and lipid molecules. Golgi apparatus or golgi body is found in animal cell
only. It modifies the cell.
Ribosomes
Ribosomes Build proteins, Ribosomes are present in both plant and animal cells.
Prokaryotes and
Eukaryotes
Introduction
Try to recall the chapter “cell”. Recall that chapter so you can
understand easier.
Differences:
- Nucleus absent
- Unicellular
- Mitochondria absent
- Examples: Bacteria and
Archaea
- Nucleus present
- Multicellular
- Mitochondria present
- Examples: Protist, fungi,
plants, animals
