2. IRRIGATION
All living being need water to live. Water is important
for proper growth and development of flowers ,
fruits and seed of plants.
What is irrigation?
• Irrigation in agriculture is the artificial watering of
the land.
• The supply of water to crops at different intervals
is called irrigation.
• The time and frequency of irrigation varies from
crop to crop , seasons to season.
4. Irrigation is Essential because
• Germination of seeds doesn’t take place under by dry conditions.
• Nutrients dissolved in water get transported to each part of the plant.
• It protects the crops from both frost and hot air currents.
• To maintain the moisture of the soil for healthy crop growth.
field has to be watered regularly.
5. Traditional methods of irrigation:
• Water available in well was lifted by Cattle or
human . Physical labor is cheaper but less
efficient .
• The various traditional methods of irrigation are:
Moat
Chain pump
Dhekli
Rahat (lever system)
7. Modern Methods of Irrigation
• Modern methods of irrigation help us to use water economically and
more efficiently in agriculture.
The Main Methods used are :
Drip system
Sprinkler system
8. • This irrigation system has an
arrangement of vertical pipes with
rotating nozzles on the top .
• It is more useful in the uneven and
the sandy land where sufficient
water is not available .
Sprinkler system
9. Drip System
• This irrigation system has an
arrangement of pipes or
tubes with very small holes
in them to a water plants
drop by drop just at the base
of the root.
• It is very efficient as water is
not wasted at all.
11. Different methods to Store grains
Storage :
• Storage of produce is an important task .
• When grains are harvested, they contain a
lot of moisture.
• If this moisture is left , it can provide an ideal
breeding ground for a variety of moulds and
insect species , it also lowers the quality of
the grain.
12. How are grains protected from moisture insects rats and micro-organism
Storage of grains on a small-scale :
• The fresh crops has a lot moisture in them , so
grains obtained by threshing are dried in the sun
to reduce the moisture in them.
• Farmer keeps dried grains in jute bag or metallic
bins.
• Dried neem leaves are used for storing food
grains at home
13. • Large scale storage of grain is done in the silos and granaries to
protect them from pests.
• For storing large quantities of grains in big godowns, specific
chemical treatments are used to protect them from the pests
and micro-organisms.
Large-scale Storage of grains :
