Biologists often distinguish between the invertebrates and vertebrates for the sake of convenience and the relatively large impact the vertebrates have had - some vertebrate classes have had as large of an impact on Earth as some entire phyla. Despite the importance of the vertebrates - the invertebrates are much more diverse and represent much of the animal biodiversity on our planet. In your own words - what are the relative advantages/disadvantages of being a vertebrate or an invertebrate? Compare and contrast the two groups. How do you think the average nonscientist perceives or identifies with these two groups?.
