Biofortification
● Breeding food crops to improve
their nutritional value.
● Improved protein, oil, vitamins,
minerals and micronutrients.
● Satisfy hidden hunger.
● Different from direct food
fortification.
Biofortification
● Addition of nutrients directly to a
food to improve taste and
quality.
● Relatively inexpensive and easy
to implement.
● Examples: Adding salt to flour,
or iodine to salt.
● Crops are bred to have higher
levels of essential nutrients.
● Time-consuming and expensive
to develop a biofortified crop.
● Examples: Breeding rice with
higher iron content.
Fortification
Approaches
1. Agronomical: Fertilizers and
agricultural practices.
2. Conventional: Crossing crop
varieties to get new varieties.
3. Transgenic: Inserting genes to
the crops.
1. Agronomic Biofortification
● Agronomic biofortification involves enhancing the nutrient content of crops
by optimizing soil and crop management practices, such as using the
right fertilizers and irrigation methods.
● Adding zinc to the soil to help wheat plants absorb more zinc, resulting in
more nutritious wheat for human consumption.
● To improve the nutrient quality of staple crops in a cost-effective and
sustainable manner.
2. Conventional Biofortification
● Conventional biofortification is the traditional breeding of crops to
increase their nutritional content through selective crossbreeding and
hybridization.
● Developing biofortified rice varieties with higher iron content through
selective breeding.
● To create nutrient-rich crop varieties that are accessible and acceptable
to communities.
3. Transgenic Biofortification
● It's like "genetic supercharging" to insert or modify specific genes
responsible for nutrient accumulation into plants, with the help of genetic
engineering.
● Inserting genes for vitamin A into rice to create "Golden Rice" rich in
provitamin A (beta-carotene).
● To rapidly develop crops with significantly enhanced nutrient levels to
address specific nutrient deficiencies in populations.

Agronomic Biofortification ● Agronomic biofortification involves enhancing the nutrient content of crops by optimizing soil and crop management practices, such as using the right fertilizers and irrigation methods. ● Adding zinc to the soil to help wheat plants absorb more zinc, resulting in more nutritious wheat for human consumption. ● To improve the nutrient quality of staple crops in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.

Conventional Biofortification ● Conventional biofortification is the traditional breeding of crops to increase their nutritional content through selective crossbreeding and hybridization. ● Developing biofortified rice varieties with higher iron content through selective breeding. ● To create nutrient-rich crop varieties that are accessible and acceptable to communities.

Transgenic Biofortification ● It's like "genetic supercharging" to insert or modify specific genes responsible for nutrient accumulation into plants, with the help of genetic engineering. ● Inserting genes for vitamin A into rice to create "Golden Rice" rich in provitamin A (beta-carotene). ● To rapidly develop crops with significantly enhanced nutrient levels to address specific nutrient deficiencies in populations.
