At Antica Tenuta Pietramore, they practice biodynamic methods on their 172 acre estate in the extreme landscape of Abruzzo, Italy. 3. BIODYNAMIC AGRICULTURE
Biodynamic agriculture is a cultivation method based on an anthroposophic
spiritual view of the world, as articulated by the philosopher and esotericist
Rudolf Steiner; it is based on respect for the earth's ecosystem, thought of as a
living being to be protected for future generations.
Through biodynamics, agriculture is in tune with nature, the earth, and human
beings.
Fertilization, cultivation, and animal husbandry are accomplished in ways that
respect and promote the vitality and fertility of the land as well as the special
characteristics of the plant and animal species.
Biodynamic farming’s deep connection with nature and complete respect for its
rhythms mean that no synthetic mineral fertilizers and chemical pesticides are
used, and that the land is managed according to cosmic and lunar cycles.

5. BIODYNAMIC AGRICULTURE
The biodynamic method means that the fertility and vitality of the land must
be attained by natural means: solid farmyard manure compost production,
fertilizer from plant material, crop rotation, mechanical pest control, and
mineral and vegetable-based pesticides.
The "dynamic" component of biodynamic highlights the fact that earth’s forces
influence plant growth.
As Wolfgang Schaumann said: "The earth is immersed in the planetary spheres
of our solar system and planetary forces influence, for example, plant
morphology."

7. BIODYNAMIC AGRICULTURE
Biodynamic farmers use their knowledge in practical ways, choosing when to
sow and to plant and to use various techniques of cultivation and harvest
according to active cosmic forces at that moment (within the limits allowed by
climatic conditions).
These cosmic effects were studied by, among others, Maria Thun and Dr.
Hartmut Spiess (the latter at the Biodynamic Research Institute in Germany).
The biodynamic sowing calendar currently used by all the world’s biodynamic
farmers is a result of the work of Maria Thun and her collaborators.
Likewise, the planets influence metals, rocks, plants, animals and people (the
so-called astral influences, whose name comes from the Greek "aster," meaning
"star").
