During the British miners' strike of the 1980s, 11-year-old Billy Elliot wants to pursue ballet instead of boxing like his father and brother. When Billy discovers ballet classes at the gym, he joins in secret. However, his family eventually finds out and grows angry with Billy for choosing ballet over boxing. The musical explores Billy's pursuit of his passion for dance against the backdrop of the miners' strike.
