The FSL Centre at Glendon College offers French language courses and support to help students meet Glendon's bilingual requirement. The Centre's mandate is to enable students to successfully complete courses in French and to become effective French language learners. It offers courses from beginner to advanced levels to suit students' varying proficiency. Students learn through interaction, authentic materials, experiential activities, and language learning strategies to become autonomous learners. The Centre also operates a Francophone Salon for informal French practice.

4. WHAT COURSES DO WE OFFER
• FSL 1000 (6 credits) – for complete beginners of French (i.e. students who have
never taken a formal French course/class)
• FSL1100 (6 credits) – for beginner/intermediate learners (i.e. students who have
taken at least one formal French course/class prior to arriving at Glendon)
• FSL1200 (6 credits) – for intermediate learners (i.e. students who have a strong
base in the language particularly good oral and written comprehension of
French)
• FSL2000 and FSL2100 (3 credits each) – for advanced learners (i.e. students who
have a strong command of the French language oral and written production and
comprehension)
• FSL2200 (3 credits) – a course offered in the winter which allows students with
an advanced level of French to complete an internship with a francophone
governmental or non-governmental organization in the Greater Toronto Area

5. HOW DO I KNOW WHAT COURSE
TO ENROLL IN
• Every student who is accepted to Glendon,
who does NOT declare one of French Studies
(FRAN), French linguistics, translation, or FSL
education as a major or minor MUST TAKE:
• THE FSL PLACEMENT TEST: an online
placement test which evaluates the level of
each student and recommends the Course
best suited to the students’ proficiency level
in French (i.e. FSL1000, FSL1100, FSL1200…)

6. MEETING THE BILINGUAL REQUIREMENT VIA
DISCIPLINE COURSES TAUGHT IN FRENCH
• Students who are confident enough in their level of French upon arriving at
Glendon can enroll directly in discipline courses offered in French
• Glendon is unique in that we offer courses taught in French by amazing
professors from all over the world in all disciplines (ex. psychology,
sociology, biology, economics, drama studies, hispanic studies etc.)
The fsl centre also offers a number of
discipline courses with linguistic support. As
part of the course, students complete online
modules which cover such things as formal
academic language in French, how to
complete a bibliography in French, and
more. A teaching assistant is assigned to the
course for the specific purpose of providing
students with linguistic support as they
move through the course.

7. OUR UNIQUE APPROACH TO
TEACHING/LEARNING FRENCH
• Interaction in French - students
participate in weekly discussion groups
(known as Groupe de discussion/Suivi des
pairs) where it is expected that they will
interact with their peers in French
• Exploitation of authentic oral and written
texts belonging to a variety of genres
found in a university setting and the
francophone world (genres include
portraits, emails, Facebook pages, blogs,
newscasts, televised debates, editorials,
scientific articles etc.).
In the FSL program students learn French through an
approach emphasizing:

Living the French language is at the
heart of our Centre : we believe that
in-class instruction must necessarily
be accompanied by out-of-class
experiences in the language.
Students are expected to participate
in activities in French outside the
classroom (at Glendon and in the
Toronto’s burgeoning francophone
community). We also offer a select
number of our students the
opportunity to complete an
internship with a Francophone
governmental or non governmental
organization operating in the GTA.
• Effective language learning
strategies - in all our courses
emphasis is on the development
of effective language learning
strategies to allow students to
become autonomous language
learners and to be better able to
advance and monitor their own
progress in the language.

9. LE SALON FRANCOPHONE DE GLENDON
• A safe, informal space for students to practice their French
• 10 language monitors (Glendon students) work at the Salon francophone each
year, some francophone, some actual and former FSL students
• Open Monday to Thursday from 12 to 6 and Friday 12 to 3 from September to
April (in summer we have a modified schedule)
• Activities at the Salon include: board games,
sing-along to songs in French (Cœur de Pirate,
Zaz, Stromae etc.), discussions on topics of
interest, learn about francophone popular
expressions, francophone pop culture,
participate in workshops (ex. Spoken Word in
French)
• Tout le monde est bienvenu au Salon!
