1. Voluminous- It’s like, A
LOT of data.
2. Various- The data come
from multiple sources in
varied formats like PDFs,
surveys, emails, photos,
tweets, etc.
3. Speedy (Velocity)- Big
data is created in real-
time, meaning it grows
exponentially very, very
quickly.
Big data comes in three flavors:
Unstructured
data that lacks a specific
format. Examples include tweets
and emails.
Semi-structured
Data that has not been classified
into a database but contains
information or tags that can be
used to segregate the data
structured
data that can be processed,
stored and retrieved in a fixed
format. Example: info stored in
a company’s database
Big data is not
only for big
businesses
In fact, if you track any of
the interactions
you have
with your
customers or
have a social
presence…
you already have
data ready to be
analyzed!
Your data is one of the most crucial assets to your business.
It can help you identify trends and reveal patterns and
associations of your customers’ buying behaviors. Small

  • 2. Seems like everyone is talking about Big Data Big data saved my marriage! Big data made me a millionaire! Big data helped me reach enlightenment I love big data! Big data is awesome!
  • 3. But what IS big data exactly?
  • 4.   • 5. Simply put, big data is: 1. Voluminous- It’s like, A LOT of data. 2. Various- The data come from multiple sources in varied formats like PDFs, surveys, emails, photos, tweets, etc. 3. Speedy (Velocity)- Big data is created in real- time, meaning it grows exponentially very, very quickly.
  • 6. Big data comes in three flavors: Unstructured data that lacks a specific format. Examples include tweets and emails. Semi-structured Data that has not been classified into a database but contains information or tags that can be used to segregate the data structured data that can be processed, stored and retrieved in a fixed format. Example: info stored in a company’s database
  • 7. Big data is not only for big businesses In fact, if you track any of the interactions you have with your customers or have a social presence… you already have data ready to be analyzed!
  • 8. Your data is one of the most crucial assets to your business. It can help you identify trends and reveal patterns and associations of your customers’ buying behaviors. Small businesses have a distinct advantage in their ability to be nimble and develop more personal relationships with their customers. Your most vital data will usually come from: • Your business website • Social presence (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) • Email lists • Customer Relationship Management database (CRM) • Chat logs and call logs (where applicable)
  • 9. Big data in action Social listening Customer Service Trends & Forecasting Monitor mentions of your brand/product on social platforms. Tailor your interactions with your customers to generate interest or improve engagement. Customer service is where small businesses can win big. Capture chat logs, product reviews and customer feedback to understand common pain points and how best to manage them. Use historical data to predict future demand. Looking at website analytics, offline and online customer behavior and historical customer touchpoints allows for more accurate forecasting.

You can understand what your customers are actually doing, not just what they say they’re doing. 1 Competitive Analysis: data from sources like Twitter and Google let you “listen in” on what your target consumers are saying about your competition. Understand what your competitors are offering and respond in real time to get ahead. 3 Generate more sales: Once you understand how your products and services are doing in the marketplace, you know where to focus your selling efforts. E-comm companies can benefit from big data by analyzing factors like cart abandonment.

  • 12. Be sure you’re collecting all of your customer data! Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software is crucial to capturing all of your customer contact information. Here are some affordable CRM software solutions for small businesses: • Insightly • Zoho • HubSpot Find the perfect Big Data solution for your business! big data solutions have traditionally been too cost-prohibitive for small businesses. To meet the unique demands and budgets of small to medium sized businesses, several simpler, more affordable big data solutions have sprung up: • SAAS • Kissmetrics • Google Analytics (you probably already have this!)
  • 13. ANALYTICS Now that you’ve found a place to store and access your data, it’s time to dig in! Services like Google Analytics and SAAS allow you to perform basic to more advanced analyses on your data. Most analytic solutions will require some data insight knowledge and/or training. A data analyst is usually worth their weight in gold. If hiring a full- time data analyst is not feasible, there are many third party providers who can access and analyze your data on a per project basis. Psst! I know a pretty great third party provider!
  • 14. Big data is NOT just for big business! Small businesses generally have less data to mine, making it much easier to find important insights and act on them quickly. The ability to pivot with relative ease gives small businesses a clear competitive advantage. Your data is one of your business’s most valuable assets. With big data solutions available for all sizes and budgets, you can’t afford NOT to take advantage. NOW is the time to start using big data to revolutionize the way you do business.
