GREEN IT GLOBAL A multi-country alliance on Green ICT in practiceICT FOOTPRINT .eu
Presentation from Jaak Vlasveld (Director Green IT Amsterdam) - at ICTFOOTPRINT.eu Hands on Workshop Event “Green ICT – in practice” 20 March 2018 Amsterdam (The Netherlands)
On March 11, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic as global confirmed cases of COVID-19 now surpass 240,000 and 9,900 deaths worldwide. The coronavirus pandemic is first and foremost a human tragedy, affecting hundreds of thousands of people. Its impact will leave a legacy as it is already causing economic shock around the world.
When Coronavirus strikes, the worst damage is done by the body's effort to fight off the disease. The immune system overreacts. Some critics say that's what's happening with the economy. They say the effort to fight the disease is hurting growth more than the disease itself.
Every economic shock leaves a legacy. The novel coronavirus will be no different. Experts estimate that a pandemic could cause average annual economic losses of 0.7% of global GDP.
In recent years, the world has seen a growing number of epidemic events, amounting to approximately 200 events annually. These events are increasing, and they are disruptive to health, economies, and society.
We will discuss 6 ways analytics leaders can help countries reduce the impact of this pandemic and estimate the likelihood of three broad economic scenarios that might unfold: a quick recovery, a global slowdown, and a pandemic-driven recession.
Join us as we discuss various visualizations of pandemics in human history and the economic impact of COVID-19. We will demo a portal that allows users to track the progress of confirmed cases and deaths around the world.
You'll learn how easy it is to:
* Why this pandemic has triggered an economic shock
* Current trends, facts, figures and challenges
* How companies can respond
* How to manage fear and uncertainty surrounding your health and work
* What data analytics leaders can do to prepare

Creative destruction versus Creative EvangelisationDinis Guarda
What is our human singularity? What is creativity in a digitalised, nano technology - IoT world?
Creative destruction refers to the incessant product and process innovation mechanism by which new production units replace outdated ones. It was coined by Joseph Schumpeter (1942), who considered it 'the essential fact about capitalism'.
What is Creative Evangelisation?
Preaching of the gospel or the practice of giving information about a particular doctrine or set of beliefs to others with the intention of converting others. Using digital tools and channels!

Big data for the next generation of event companiesRaj Anand
Only on rare occasions do we consider the amount of data that our every action produces. It’s pretty overwhelming just to think about every interaction on every app on every device in our bag or pocket, in every environment and every location.
But then there’s more. We also use access cards, transportation passes and gym memberships. We have hobbies, we travel, buy groceries, books and maybe warm beverages on rainy days. We are part of multiple communities. Looking around billions of people are doing the same. Our every action produces data about us. This is big.
We believe taking an interest in this wealth of data will be the key to success for next generation Event Companies.
We are living in a fast changing world, where it’s ever more important to foresee trends and seize opportunities. A global perspective is not a strategic advantage anymore it is a necessity.
Event companies are facilitators , they create common grounds for brands and audiences, by thoughtfully connecting goals and means. Having a deep understanding of customer behaviour, group psychology, digital habits, brand interaction, communication, and awareness through unlocking the power of big data will ensure next generation event companies thrive on strategy.

Topics include:
— Overview of distributed ML/DL including architecture, implementation, usage patterns, pros and cons
— Overview of Apache Ignite ML/DL, including built-in ML/DL algorithms, and how to implement your own
— Model inference with Apache Ignite, including how to train models with other libraries, like Apache Spark, and deploy them in Ignite
— How Apache Ignite and TensorFlow can be used together to build distributed DL model training and inference"
Big Data Helsinki v 3 | "Federated Learning and Privacy-preserving AI" - Oguz...Dataconomy Media
"Machine learning algorithms require significant amounts of training data which has been centralized on one machine or in a datacenter so far. For numerous applications, such need of collecting data can be extremely privacy-invasive. Recent advancements in AI research approach this issue by a new paradigm of training AI models, i.e., Federated Learning.
In federated learning, edge devices (phones, computers, cars etc.) collaboratively learn a shared AI model while keeping all the training data on device, decoupling the ability to do machine learning from the need to store the data in the cloud. From personal data perspective, this paradigm enables a way of training a model on the device without directly inspecting users’ data on a server. This talk will pinpoint several examples of AI applications benefiting from federated learning and the likely future of privacy-aware systems."

Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.

Adjusting OpenMP PageRank : SHORT REPORT / NOTESSubhajit Sahu
For massive graphs that fit in RAM, but not in GPU memory, it is possible to take
advantage of a shared memory system with multiple CPUs, each with multiple cores, to
accelerate pagerank computation. If the NUMA architecture of the system is properly taken
into account with good vertex partitioning, the speedup can be significant. To take steps in
this direction, experiments are conducted to implement pagerank in OpenMP using two
different approaches, uniform and hybrid. The uniform approach runs all primitives required
for pagerank in OpenMP mode (with multiple threads). On the other hand, the hybrid
approach runs certain primitives in sequential mode (i.e., sumAt, multiply).

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.
