I. Over and over again families are left without their loved
ones, to the acts of suicide. Suicide doesn’t only
include the people who have died but also the attempts
that have been made. There are warning signs and
prevention of suicide but that has not made suicide low
on the death rate.
A. Suicide carries a social and moral meaning in all
societies. At both the individual and population
levels, the suicide rate has been long understood to
correlate with cultural, social, political, and

B. Given its unique nature, research on suicide faces a
series of obstacles that limit progress in the
understanding, prevention, and treatment of the
problem.
II. Suicide is not something new but something that is a part
of our history.
A. This history of suicide dated back to Egypt, Greece,
and Rome where suicide was used as part of a ritual.
i. Suicide in ancient Egypt was viewed as a neutral
event, because death was merely a passage from one
form of existence to another. It was simply a
means of avoiding, disgrace, abandonment, guilt,

unemployment or financial problems, guilt

The Role of Couples’ Conversations in Relational Development: A Content Analysis of Courtship Talk in Harlequin Romance Novels, relies largely on references to the Harlequin series. This article dives deeper into the conversations that the characters have in the novels and the aspects and steps of developing romantic relationships. The stages of romantic relationships were referenced in accordance to what Knapp had previously established being initiating, experimenting, intensifying, integrating and bonding. (p. 128) After referencing Knapp’s stages of relationship development, J.K. Alberts analyzes ten novels from the Harlequin series to exemplify the stages. Alberts uses examples and quotes conversations from the text in the analysis of the novels to prove the relation as well. In conclusion, Alberts states that from the research presented in the article can lead to many other things but even though “romantic literature may have its drawbacks as a research database; however, it is a widespread and important cultural artifact that should not be dismissed out of hand.” (p. 141)
J.K. Alberts uses multiple examples to support the initial idea that there are many steps and important conversations in establishing romantic relationships. Because the Harlequin romance novels are so popular and have been around for so many years these novels were a strong choice in representing the stages of relationships. The way Alberts quotes directly from the text to exemplify different stages and different language context while also using research from a few different people, it helps the reader to understand the stages fully. The stages are also very clear and relatable to real life situations which help to be able to understand how these may both relate to novels and also real time relationships. One thing that could have been more focused is that the author referencing many different people who have done research in the past and it may have been more beneficial to focus solely on Knapp because their research seems the most expansive and relevant to the content of this article.
The information presented in this article is very relevant to my topic and will be very helpful when I write about the stages of romantic relationships in novels later in the semester when composing my paper. The stages that were developed by Knapp are also very informative and will be very useful to dive deeper into stages of theses relationships in novels.

At the beginning of this week, I felt finding references for my research paper was a little bit difficult. My topic is “women in mass media” and my research question is “Why women are affected by the media the most?” I tried to search articles that were related to my research question through Cypress Library, Gale Literary Sources, and I found two articles from this source. They are “Selling the self: women and the feminine seduction of advertising” of Kristine Blair and “Gender Issues in Advertising Language” of Nancy Artz. In addition, I also did another searching on other resources and found one more article that was “The Role of the Media in Body Image Concerns Among Women: A Meta-Analysis of Experimental and Correlational Studies” of Shelly Grabe. Overall, there was nothing resource that I thought it was the least helpful this week. However, I thought the Gale Literary Sources of Cypress Library was most helpful for me because it provided me two articles. During finding sources, I used keywords, such as “women”, “media effects”, and “advertising”, and I refined my keywords as I went along. Moreover, I also found more keywords, such as “meta-analysis” and “body image”. The database provided the most material for my topic was the result of the experiment in the article “The Role of the Media in Body Image Concerns Among Women: A Meta-Analysis of Experimental and Correlational Studies”. I did not find sources from credible Internet sources. According to these article, I was able to find specific statistics to add to my essay. My impression overall of my research experience is writing a research paper is not easy and requires the writer to take time and follow the procedure to achieve it.

There are many of children's books out there, but it's important to evaluate children's literature critically before introducing it. Suffice it to say that not all books are created equal. Students read many types of literature throughout school. To appreciate a variety of literature and to complete assignments involving these works, students need to understand how to read critically. Learn how to read literature critically to evaluate and interpret an author’s work.
In literature, readers must pay attention to plot, or the events that take place to create meaning. The plot takes place in the setting, which also adds to the meaning of the story. When reading, ask yourself how the setting adds to the different situations and important events of the story.
In most plots, characters are introduced and usually depict traits of human nature. Characters may represent only a few traits, or they may represent very complex conflicts and emotions. A character can be the narrator, or a person (or more than one person) who tells the story. The narrator or narrators will see events from a certain perspective and have attitudes toward the events and other characters. This is called point of view, and this perspective is a key issue in figuring out the meaning of the work.
Fiction will have figurative language, too, which will be used to describe and understand characters. Fiction attempts to represent reality in some way. Often, reality is represented in different ways through symbols and codes of human meaning and systems. Fiction, for example, may represent every day events and stick closely to place and time. Then again, fiction may represent moral or spiritual aspects through symbols, characters, or improbable events. Authors use fiction to offer a complex understanding of the world. As you read fiction, try to notice the differences and similarities between the world the author creates and the world you inhabit.
Critical thinking in literature also develops a keen awareness of the use of
language, not merely from the aesthetic point of view but keeping in mind today’s
world and its developments, the inevitable political point of view. Students realize that
language is not a neutral phenomenon explaining some already existing reality but
words weave layers of meanings creating and generating their own reality.

Yolonda Alston Eng 101 Professor Alicia Bolton 30 July 2012 Strength and weakness of annotated bibliography My annotated bibliography is based on my five sourcesI used to do my research paper on. We had to have five sources which were two articles, one film-on-demand, one e-book, and one physical book. We also had to summarize, evaluates, and explain how the source will be used in our research paper. My weakness in this essay was In-text citations were not formatted and framed correctly. My evaluation of each source was not logical and well-explained. I still had some trouble with using second-person and the correct use of grammar and word choices. My summary of each source was not thorough explain. My introduction could have been a little bit more clearly explain of my purpose to write a research paper. My strength is how the source is used in the essay by logical and well-explained paragraph. The essay is well-organized and the transitions flow is perfect than the other two essay I did. My evaluation was adequate/ effective to each of my source. I explain how relevance the issue related to today world.
