network of Petrol Stations, Kerosene Dealers, LPG Distributors, Lube Shoppes, besides
supplying fuel directly to hundreds of industries, and several international and

Bharat Petroleum Corporation ( BPCL) was established in 1952. It is one of the leading company in
the petroleum sector in India. The 1860s saw vast industrial development. A lot of petroleum
refineries also came up. An important player in the South Asian market then was the Burmah Oil
Company. Though incorporated in Scotland in 1886, the company grew out of the enterprises of the
Rangoon Oil Company, which had been formed in 1871 to refine crude oil produced from primitive
hand dug wells in Upper Burma. The search for oil in India began in 1886, when Mr. Goodenough of
McKillop Stewart Company drilled a well near Jaypore in upper Assam and struck oil. In 1889, the
Assam Railway and Trading Company (ARTC) struck oil at Digboi marking the beginning of oil
production in India.
On 24th January 1976, the Burmah Shell Group of Companies was taken over by the Government of
India to form Bharat Refineries Limited. On 1st August 1977, it was renamed Bharat Petroleum
Corporation Limited. It was also the first refinery to process newly found indigenous crude (Bombay
High), in the country

BHARAT Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) has announced the launch of its new `retail visual identity' in Kerala.
Addressing a press conference in the city today, Mr S. Varadarajan, General Manager Retail - South, BPCL, said the company's
first retail outlet with the new visual identity would be based in Thiruvananthapuram.
The new visual identity will give the company's retail outlets an international look and feel, he added. By the end of April this
year, the company plans to introduce the new visual identity in 50 outlets in the Southern region alone, he said. Nationally, it
expects to have 150 new-look outlets in place by the end of April.
By the end of the next financial year, the company plans to have between 600 and 700 retail outlets sporting the new visual
identity, he added. As part of its marketing efforts, the company recently set up its first `vehicle care centre' at a retail outlet in
New Delhi. During the course of the next financial year, the company plans to establish 30 such `vehicle care centres' across
South India, Mr Varadarajan said.
Also on the cards is an expansion of the company's `In & Out' network of convenience stores, he added. At present, the
company has 300 `In & Out' stores and it plans to have 500 such stores by the end of March 2006, he explained.
Commenting on the new visual identity for the company's retail outlets, Mr P. Sudhahar, Manager-Retail Engineering, BPCL said

used in the construction of the new-look outlets, he added.
