- 3. COMBINING FORM: DERMAT/O Dermat/o refers to the skin We can combine dermat/o with numerous prefixes and suffixes to create word meaning. An example is the word: dermatitis The suffix –itis means inflammation, therefore: Dermatitis means inflammation of the skin.
- 4. COMBINING FORM: MELAN/O Melan/o means black. We can combine melan/o with the suffix –cyte, which means cell. We have created the word melanocyte, which means “black cell.”
- 5. SUFFIX: -DERMA The suffix –derma also refers to the skin. By adding –derma to the end of a word, we can create meaning. By adding the combining form leuk/o, which means white, we can create the word leukoderma, meaning white skin.
