A friend and I wanted to set up a conference in 2019 to be hosted in Yale-NUS College that has to do with informing students about jobs that are outside of the more famous ones that people are regularly exposed to.
2. Whichindustry
shouldyougofor?
It is no secret that most students go after a
certain career based on some sort of heuristic
—they sell themselves an idea that an industry
suits them the most based on whatever
information that they have. This has led to way
too many people going after industries that
has most data out there, i.e. the big three
(finance, tech, consulting), but there are other
interesting and potentially rewarding industries
that liberal arts student can explore.
3. Theproblem.
Students simply don’t know what industries
and jobs exist out there (even I don’t!).
Companies in new industries do not have the
HR resources to conduct recruitment events
like the big firms do. Often also, people do
not know enough of new industries even if
they have heard of them. Students are not
always proactive in approaching people to
ask—further, they don’t know who to ask.
5. What we have to do is to be for ever
curiously testing new opinions and
courting new impressions, never
acquiescing in a facile orthodoxy, of
Comte, of Hegel, or of our own.
- Walter Pater, The Renaissance (1873)
7. Purpose.
α. To introduce the new/non-traditional
industries to Yale-NUS students and to
students in the wider Singaporean
undergraduate community.
β. To connect recruiting firms with job-
seeking students.
γ. To learn the broad skills that are needed
to join and excel in the new industries.
8. Plan.
A one-day conference from 10am to 5pm,
during recess week in AY 2018/2 (20 Feb
2019), at Yale-NUS College
