Beyond Big Brother

Editor's Notes

  1. My name is Nicole Tekulve and I am the Information Commons Librarian at UT-Chattanooga. This is my first time at this conference and I am excited to present to you all today. Thank you in advance for attending this session. If you have questions at any time, please feel free to stop me. And if you’ve used lab management software before, I’d love to hear you insights as well.
  2. Recent job change. Previous held the position of Instructional Services Librarian at the University of Southern Indiana. Presenting on past research conducting during the Fall 2012 semester.
  3. Starting to build an assessment plan. When I came to USI, there was no assessment of any kind within our information literacy sessions. I started researching assessment options and began by developing a post-class feedback form as a way of assessing whether we the students were actually learning anything in these classes. I developed a Google Form and starting using it with all my classes. As there year moved on, I realized we needed more assessment. One of the things we heard through the feedback from was that we tending to cram a ton of information in a short 50 or 75 minute session. Some students thought we talked to fast covering a wide range of topics at a lightening speed.
  4. So how did that lead us to use lab management software for assessment? As someone who is new to assessment, I am open to experimenting with different technologies. This one sort of fell into my lap so I ran with it!Another reason I embarked on this project was to prove the worth of the product to campus IT. They invested in the software but there was no training or information given on how to use it in a classroom environment. They told us we could use it for a year and then evaluate. It was my plan to eventually offer workshops for faculty on how to utilize the software so they could see its potential as well.Unfortunately I left before I could do that.
  5. Throughout the literature this type of software can be categorized as lab management, classroom management, or classroom control. I chose Lab Management because our classroom also served as a computer lab and for whatever reason that’s the term I always went with. Definition: “classroom management systems provide educators with a bird's eye view of their students' computer screens, enabling teachers to have total management over their classroom environment”- Matt VillanoI’m only going to speak about one specific product but there are lots of other systems out there (Synchroneyes, Apple Remote Desktop, Netop, SMART Sync) A little bit of detail on LanSchool. Features, set-up, etc. Used version 7.6. Older version that does not have the Teacher Assistant which allows you to control the classroom via your iPad, iPhone, or Android device. This is a premium software which our school acquired a site license for. “classroom management systems provide educators with a bird's eye view of their students' computer screens, enabling teachers to have total management over their classroom environment”- MattVillano
  6. From LanSchool White Paper
  7. Many of us have used Poll Everywhere which is great. But not all students have cell phones (non traditional students) and some will opt out of participating if they’re simply asked. This ensures more participation. Students are sent a pop-up asking the with the question and possible answers. Teacher sees the following update as the students responses are recorded. Will show you a % of students who answered.
  8. Give control to students. Bring up a grid of student machines. Each will be labeled according to the configurations you choose during LanSchool set-up (numbers, names). Ask for student volunteers to demo a database search, catalog search, etc. and project their search for all the students to see. Process is as simple as a few clicks of the mouse.
  9. Capture a student’s search anonymously. Give students independent search time. Be transparent and make sure that you know you’ll be monitoring. Take screenshots (a feature built into the software) of a few students’ work. Usually pick one search that needs some tweaking and one search that is structured correctly.
  10. In my opinion, this was a worthwhile project as it gave me more experience with classroom technology and assessment. It also was interested to work with library and campus IT on resolving issues.
  11. More participation. Also was a chance to pause during the lesson and reflect.
  12. Can feel like a puppet master trying to load polls, show choices, share screens etc. The learning curve on the software can be high depending on how you classroom is networked. I suggest roping in someone from IT (either library or campus) to help troubleshoot problems.
  13. 393 students in English 101, 201, and CMST 101 (our basic research classes)
  14. Thank you for allowing me to speak to you about these ideas today. Questions!
