Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) was an operating system developed at UC Berkeley that derived from Unix and included important contributions to sockets and TCP/IP networking. BSD became widely adopted and was the basis for many commercial Unix variants as well as later open source operating systems like FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD. While legal issues arose regarding AT&T code, BSD continues to influence operating systems through its open source descendants and permissively licensed code used in other proprietary systems.
