The Wrath of GrendelCharacters:Hrothgar- The king of the Danes, who is troubled by Grendel’s attacks on the people of his town.Grendel- A monster who terrorizes the people in Herot. He brutally kills and eats the men as they sleep. He is a heartless beast who kills with no remorse.Events:Grendel begins his killings of the people of Herot. For twelve years the people are forced to live in fear of Grendel. Hrothgar and his council look for solutions to their problem
The Wrath of Grendel Cont’dImportance:This section sets up the entire story of Beowulf and shows the savagery of Grendel and the despair of Hrothgar and his people.Connecting A-S Values:This section showed the Anglo-Saxon belief in a Christian religion and of God
The Coming of Beowulf Characters:Beowulf- The strongest of the Geats and follower of Higlac. He is stronger then any man in the world. He vows to slay Grendel and free the inhabitants of Herot from their sorrow.Hrothgar- He meets Beowulf and listens to why Beowulf has come.Events: Beowulf arrives at Herot and tells them that he comes there to kill Grendel and speaks to Hrothgar about his motives.Importance: Brings Beowulf into the story and sets up the battle between Beowulf and GrendelConnecting A-S Values:Anglo Saxon stories usually have a strong male protagonist which Beowulf is a prime example of
The Battle with GrendelCharacters:Beowulf- Beowulf fights Grendel with his bare handsGrendel- Comes into Herot and begins to snatch up men to kill and eat some men, then is grabbed by Beowulf and fights for his life.Events: Night falls and Grendel comes in to the meadhall and grabs Beowulf and then they have an intense battle. Beowulf tears off one of Grendel’s arms and Grendel flees for his life back to his lair. Importance: Beowulf does as he promised to do and defeats Grendel, which makes the people feel safe. He shows his heroic abilities in this section.Connecting A-S Values:This section exhibits the bravery that was valued and admired by the Anglo-Saxon culture .
The Monsters’ Lair Characters:Hrothgar- Tells Beowulf of Grendel’s Mother’s existenceGrendel’s Mother- She is referenced for the first time in the story and is more ferocious then Grendel.Events:Hrothgar tells Beowulf the monsters seen in the moors, Grendel and his mother, and asks Beowulf to go to her lair and defeat her and he will give him riches and fame.Importance:This section tells of the next enemy for Beowulf to slay and sets up their battle.Connecting A-S Values:The Anglo Saxon culture had polytheistic properties which explains their belief in monsters such as Grendel and his mother.
The Battle with Grendel’s MotherCharacters:Beowulf- He takes vows to kill Grendel’s mother and dives into the lake to seek her lair and slay her.Grendel’s Mother- A vicious beast who attacks Beowulf and takes him to his lair and tries to kill Beowulf to avenge her son.Events:
