Breastfeeding ...... They were thousands of years ago the only way to
feed the newborn. The mother's milk is the food of choice, which all
agree fittings child.
Breastfeeding is the optimal way to feed a baby from birth and during
weaning. Mothers should continue to breast feed for as long as they wish
because of the health and psychological benefits that breast feeding
provides.
 Babies were born to be breastfed.
 Human milk is easy to digest and contains more than 200
components that babies need in the early months of life.
 Factors in breast milk protect infants from a wide variety of illnesses.
 Children who have been breastfed have less risk of becoming overweight
or obese, even as adults.
 Research has shown that children who had been breastfed had higher IQs.
 Lack of breastfeeding is a risk factor for sudden infant death
syndrome(SIDS).
 Human milk protects premature infants from life-threatening
gastrointestinal disease.
 Breastfed children have lower risk of dying before their first birthday.
Formula fed infants have twice the risk of having ear infections
in the first year than infants who are exclusively breastfed for
at least 4 months.
 Breastfeeding reduces the incidence, and lessens the severity of a
large number of infections, including pneumonia and meningitis in
infants.
 Breastfeeding protects infants against a variety of illnesses, such as
diarrhea and infant botulism.
Breastfed babies have less chance of allergies, asthma and eczema.
 Evidence suggests that exclusive breastfeeding for at least two
months protects susceptible children from Type I insulin dependent
diabetes mellitus (DDM).
 Breastfeeding may reduce the risk for subsequent inflammatory
bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and childhood
cancers.
Breastfeeding helps the uterus to shrink to its pre-pregnancy state
and reduces the amount of blood lost after delivery.
 Mothers who breastfeed for at least 3 months may lose more weight
than mothers who do not breastfeed.
 Breastfeeding mothers usually resume their menstrual cycles 20 to 30
weeks later than mothers who do not breastfeed.
Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months can help in child
spacing among women who do not use contraceptives (The Lactation
Amenorrhea Method).
 Breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
 Breastfeeding may reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
The cost of infant formula has increased 150 percent since the 1980’s.
 Breastfeeding reduces health care costs.
Unlike infant formula, breastfeeding requires no fossil
fuels for its manufacture or preparation.
 Breastfeeding reduces pollutants created as by-products
during the manufacture of plastics for bottles and metal for cans
to contain infant formula.
 Breastfeeding reduces the burden on our landfills, as there are
no cans to throw away.
The answer is of course “no”. Human milk is specific to the human
species, a dynamic and complex biological fluid containing over 200
active constituents including immuno-protective agents, enzymes,
hormones ,vitamins , growth and other factors as well as essential
nutrients in perfect balance for the growth and development of
human infants. It changes in composition during a feed, from feed to
feed during the day and over time as the growing infant’s needs
change.
Breast milk changes in appearance over time
Breastfeeding at least 8 times in 24 hours
Breastfeeding is best for moms and their babies for many
reasons. One reason is that breastfeeding makes it easier to
lose the weight gained during pregnancy, by using up extra
calories. Also, breast milk helps fight infections and reduces
allergies, so breastfed babies are sick less often.
Follow your My Pyramid Plan for Moms (see slide19) to choose the right
amount from each food group. In addition, visit your doctor. While you
are breastfeeding, your doctor can keep track of your weight and tell
you if you are losing weight as you should. If you are losing weight too
slowly, cut back on the calories you are eating. The best way to eat
fewer calories is to decrease the amount of “extras” you are eating.
Your need for fluids also increases while you are breastfeeding. You may
notice that you are thirstier than before. Drink enough water and other
fluids to quench your thirst. A common suggestion is to drink a glass of
water or other beverage every time you breastfeed. Some beverages,
such as soft drinks and fruit drinks, contain added sugars. Limit your
intake of these beverages. Drinking a moderate amount (up to two to
three 8-fluid-ounce cups a day) of coffee or other caffeinated beverages
does not affect your baby. The Dietary Guidelines recommend that
breastfeeding women not drink alcoholic beverages. Any alcohol that is
in your bloodstream while you are breastfeeding can pass into breast
milk.
Unless your doctor advises you not to be physically active, include 30
minutes or more of physical activity, such as walking or swimming, on
most if not all days of the week . The physical activity can be done in
short periods of 10 minutes . The total time of 30 minutes is what is
important
When you are breastfeeding, you have special nutritional needs. Follow
the My Pyramid Plan for Moms below to help you and your baby stay
healthy.
Eat these amounts from each food group daily.
The calories and amounts of food you need differ if you are only
breastfeeding or breastfeeding and giving formula.
Choose the Plan that is right for you.
In each food group, choose foods and beverages that are low in
“extras.”

Benefits of breastfeeding

  • 1.
  • 2. Breastfeeding ...... They were thousands of years ago the only way to feed the newborn. The mother's milk is the food of choice, which all agree fittings child. Breastfeeding is the optimal way to feed a baby from birth and during weaning. Mothers should continue to breast feed for as long as they wish because of the health and psychological benefits that breast feeding provides.
  • 3.  Babies were born to be breastfed.  Human milk is easy to digest and contains more than 200 components that babies need in the early months of life.  Factors in breast milk protect infants from a wide variety of illnesses.  Children who have been breastfed have less risk of becoming overweight or obese, even as adults.  Research has shown that children who had been breastfed had higher IQs.
  • 4.  Lack of breastfeeding is a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome(SIDS).  Human milk protects premature infants from life-threatening gastrointestinal disease.  Breastfed children have lower risk of dying before their first birthday.
  • 5. Formula fed infants have twice the risk of having ear infections in the first year than infants who are exclusively breastfed for at least 4 months.  Breastfeeding reduces the incidence, and lessens the severity of a large number of infections, including pneumonia and meningitis in infants.  Breastfeeding protects infants against a variety of illnesses, such as diarrhea and infant botulism.
  • 6. Breastfed babies have less chance of allergies, asthma and eczema.  Evidence suggests that exclusive breastfeeding for at least two months protects susceptible children from Type I insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (DDM).  Breastfeeding may reduce the risk for subsequent inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and childhood cancers.
  • 7. Breastfeeding helps the uterus to shrink to its pre-pregnancy state and reduces the amount of blood lost after delivery.  Mothers who breastfeed for at least 3 months may lose more weight than mothers who do not breastfeed.  Breastfeeding mothers usually resume their menstrual cycles 20 to 30 weeks later than mothers who do not breastfeed.
  • 8. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months can help in child spacing among women who do not use contraceptives (The Lactation Amenorrhea Method).  Breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.  Breastfeeding may reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
  • 9. The cost of infant formula has increased 150 percent since the 1980’s.  Breastfeeding reduces health care costs. Unlike infant formula, breastfeeding requires no fossil fuels for its manufacture or preparation.  Breastfeeding reduces pollutants created as by-products during the manufacture of plastics for bottles and metal for cans to contain infant formula.  Breastfeeding reduces the burden on our landfills, as there are no cans to throw away.
  • 10.
  • 11. The answer is of course “no”. Human milk is specific to the human species, a dynamic and complex biological fluid containing over 200 active constituents including immuno-protective agents, enzymes, hormones ,vitamins , growth and other factors as well as essential nutrients in perfect balance for the growth and development of human infants. It changes in composition during a feed, from feed to feed during the day and over time as the growing infant’s needs change.
  • 12. Breast milk changes in appearance over time
  • 13.
  • 14. Breastfeeding at least 8 times in 24 hours Breastfeeding is best for moms and their babies for many reasons. One reason is that breastfeeding makes it easier to lose the weight gained during pregnancy, by using up extra calories. Also, breast milk helps fight infections and reduces allergies, so breastfed babies are sick less often.
  • 15. Follow your My Pyramid Plan for Moms (see slide19) to choose the right amount from each food group. In addition, visit your doctor. While you are breastfeeding, your doctor can keep track of your weight and tell you if you are losing weight as you should. If you are losing weight too slowly, cut back on the calories you are eating. The best way to eat fewer calories is to decrease the amount of “extras” you are eating.
  • 16. Your need for fluids also increases while you are breastfeeding. You may notice that you are thirstier than before. Drink enough water and other fluids to quench your thirst. A common suggestion is to drink a glass of water or other beverage every time you breastfeed. Some beverages, such as soft drinks and fruit drinks, contain added sugars. Limit your intake of these beverages. Drinking a moderate amount (up to two to three 8-fluid-ounce cups a day) of coffee or other caffeinated beverages does not affect your baby. The Dietary Guidelines recommend that breastfeeding women not drink alcoholic beverages. Any alcohol that is in your bloodstream while you are breastfeeding can pass into breast milk.
  • 17. Unless your doctor advises you not to be physically active, include 30 minutes or more of physical activity, such as walking or swimming, on most if not all days of the week . The physical activity can be done in short periods of 10 minutes . The total time of 30 minutes is what is important
  • 18. When you are breastfeeding, you have special nutritional needs. Follow the My Pyramid Plan for Moms below to help you and your baby stay healthy. Eat these amounts from each food group daily. The calories and amounts of food you need differ if you are only breastfeeding or breastfeeding and giving formula. Choose the Plan that is right for you. In each food group, choose foods and beverages that are low in “extras.”
