The federal definition describes gifted students as those who demonstrate high achievement capability or potential in areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic or leadership capacities and need services beyond typical school programs to fully develop their abilities. The NAGC definition describes gifted individuals as those who show outstanding aptitude or competence defined as exceptional ability to reason and learn or documented top 10% performance in one or more domains including academics, music, language or motor skills. Winebrenner's definition describes gifted students as those whose abilities exceed grade level expectations by two or more years in one or more areas.

2. NAGC Definition
Gifted individuals are those who
demonstrate outstanding levels of
aptitude (defined as an exceptional ability
to reason and learn) or competence
(documented performance or achievement
in top 10% or rarer) in one or more
domains.
Domains include any structured area of
activity with its own symbol system
(e.g., mathematics, music, language)
and/or set of sensorimotor skills
(e.g., painting, dance, sports).
