Startups will redesign our cities through innovations in mobility, infrastructure, and city services. While past predictions of the future often missed major technological changes like smartphones and the internet, startups are now positioned to address ongoing urban challenges through sectors that are among the least digitized like transportation, energy, and water. New companies are developing technologies like drones for inspections, smart sprinklers to reduce water use, electric transportation, indoor vertical farms, tools for architects and first responders, and low-cost water quality monitoring. However, this is still an early stage for urban tech startups, with many opportunities remaining across city systems as digitization accelerates.
It feels like we have building web sites and applications for centuries, doesn’t it? However, we know that this is so untrue, because the web is only 25 years old since Sir Tim Berner’s Lee great proposal at CERN. The impetus of online design and development has changed, we now talk about the Digital Worker, the Digital environment and we about building web applications and ecommerce applications that are user friendly and customer centric. So what has this all to with the humble Java application developer? The answer is everything. We must be explicit in the software that we write, lean and agile in the way we write, and whilst making sure the take full advantage of the underlying Java platform. In fact, because we have this magnificent Java Virtual Machine and open standards like Java EE, we can continue build quality, robust and sustainable software for all our stakeholders and business users.

The Impact of Digitisation on Photographic HeritageSimon Tanner
Simon Tanner of King's College London gave a talk on the impact of digitization on photographic heritage. He discussed how digitization has led to an exponential growth in the number of photographs ever taken, from just a few million daguerreotypes to over 3 trillion photos today. However, digitizing cultural heritage collections poses financial challenges, with estimates that it could cost 14-19 million euros to digitize photographs held in European libraries alone. Tanner also addressed issues around curating digital collections and ensuring their long-term preservation and access.

It included seven speaker presentations and the announcement of award winners in 13 categories, including best use of Twitter, blogs, and collaboration platforms.
The future of BIM is open - or - Is proprietary BIM unsustainableBe2camp Admin
The document discusses the future of building information modeling (BIM) being open rather than closed or proprietary. It notes that open, documented, and free formats like SQL and XML may be better communication formats for BIM going forward, rather than closed commercial options like Revit or ArchiCAD. The future of BIM is seen as being open like the internet, with open standards allowing building data to be used more flexibly across different analysis and design programs from multiple developers.
The document discusses using social media and web 2.0 tools to share Building Information Modeling (BIM) data. It notes that while these tools are commonly used for activities like email and social media, they could also be used to collaborate on modeling, clash detection, and sharing data across the construction supply chain. The document provides examples of how blogs, slidesharing, video, and storification could be used to structure BIM data and discusses the need for rules and procedures to classify and search the data, similar to existing document filing systems and the PAS 1192 standard.
The third BIM: the social built environment modelBe2camp Admin
The document discusses the use of an immersive 3D model of the new Library of Birmingham created by Daden Limited. The model was used for consultation, planning, and training purposes during the development of the library. It allowed library staff and the community to experience the new spaces before they were built. A variety of interactive tools within the model gathered feedback that informed the project. Quotes from those involved expressed how the model helped with layout, positioning of features, and engagement during the planning process. The document argues that immersive 3D models can provide benefits beyond traditional BIM/CAD by allowing for collaborative and subjective first-person experiences of a space throughout its lifecycle.
1. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens developed a new Center for Sustainable Landscapes (CSL) building to serve as a model for sustainability and multidisciplinary collaboration.
2. The 24,000 square foot CSL building cost $11.8 million to construct and includes administration, research, and teaching spaces focused on sustainability.
3. The design team used passive strategies like optimal orientation, a high-performance envelope, natural daylighting, and natural ventilation to achieve net-zero energy and Living Building Challenge certification with only 118,000 kWh annual energy consumption, far less than a typical office building.
This document discusses the performance gap that often exists between the expected and actual energy performance of green buildings. Design does not always match reality due to factors like inadequate commissioning, improper lighting levels and controls, and poor fabric performance. The Technology Strategy Board studied over 100 new-build and refurbished buildings and found common issues that contributed to energy performance falling short of predictions. Measuring actual building performance through tools like TM46 and CarbonBuzz can help identify performance gaps and ensure that green buildings are not only designed to be efficient but are also delivered that way.
1) Prof. Angus McIntosh presented on the vision of "Green Towns" and principles of sustainable urban development at the Green Vision 2013 conference in Manchester.
2) The presentation examined case studies of existing towns and developments that incorporated environmental, economic, and social sustainability including Bournville, Cumbernauld, Port Sunlight, and Vauban, Germany.
3) Key principles that could guide master plans and policymakers included focusing on sustained occupier demand, investment performance, climate change mitigation, and creating a strong culture and sense of place that respects people and the environment.

Some key benefits mentioned include being able to be lit, stunning designs, award winning, and using recycled materials. The solid surfaces can be used for countertops, bartops, worktops, backlit splashbacks, splashbacks, tiles, bespoke projects, tables, and more limited only by design and imagination.
Responsible Sourcing of building materialsBe2camp Admin
This document discusses a construction company that operates over 350 sites in the UK and Channel Islands, employs 4000 people, and produces over 40 million tonnes of materials annually. It is one of the largest construction material companies in Europe, owning and operating the largest granite quarry on the continent. The document repeatedly emphasizes delivering value in construction materials and services.
This document discusses enabling technology to create an online community focused on green vision and building information modeling. It emphasizes building trust and staying connected within the community by making it accessible to all and establishing a culture of reciprocity. The community aims to connect people interested in green vision and BIM through social media accounts.
Using social media in sustainability educationBe2camp Admin
The document discusses using social media for collaborative learning in education. It proposes that social media can create an egalitarian landscape that promotes psychological safety and knowledge sharing. This allows for a 360-degree perspective on projects from various stakeholders like students, researchers, and external critics. When used for reflective blogging, team wikis, and idea sharing on Twitter, social media can foster peer review, engagement, cohesion and the consolidation of knowledge between projects and teams. It presents social media as a template for collaborative practice that encourages innovation through the externalization and robust testing of ideas.
