W
OW!! What a start to this
month?! Winners Of
Worthiness awards and all
the memories of the event
simply bring a smile to my face. Team BE
had a tough time with all the background
work but all is well that ends well. Right?
As mentioned last time, Winners Of
Worthiness awards or as we call it I AM
WOW awards are to honour those women
who have excelled in their field and shown
immense progress. It is for those women
who are not only worthy in themselves but
also have helped people realise their worth
through their work. Finding these gems
wasn’t easy but was totally worth the task.
All the candidates were lovely human beings
and have laid their foundation brick by
brick. The strong body of work that they
have created is highly commendable. Kudos
to each of them!
This time the edition is all about WOW.
Wonderful memories of the event are shared
here – From the awardees, to the panellists
and the guests, simply everything is
beautifully portrayed. Some wonderful
performances served the purpose of icing
on the cake. This Bliss edition is especially
dedicated to detailed profiles of all the
winners and their line of work – their
stories and how they have conquered in
their respective fields. In addition to this,
as always certain informative reads are
sandwiched for your pleasure. We hope
you savour every bit of this platter served
to you.
All the lovely women, the ones who
made this happen, the ones who were
awarded and even the ones who weren’t
deserve a standing ovation. Each of us
have our strengths, weakness, pluses and
minuses which makes us as worthy as we
are. We are as lovely as love, as beautiful as
we perceive ourselves, very special in our
own special way, important for the ones
who are important to us and we are all very
worthy in our very own right.
Like all the other months, let’s try a
new to do list for this time as well:
Grab a bar of chocolate and eat as
much as you like
Look in to the mirror and tell
yourself ‘I love you”
Try and help at least 3 people in
the month without expecting
returns
Enjoy BE and be yourself!

Master trainer of a diagnostics tool -META-Health.
Trainer in Information technology called NES-health and
Advanced Clearing Energetics in India today
anu.metamedicine@gmail.com || 9930898116
ANU MEHTA
Anu Mehta is the only Master trainer
of a diagnostics tool called META-Health,
and a trainer in Information technology
called NES-health in India today. She also
trains people in various emotion releasing
techniques. She is an international speaker
and also host’s speakers from various parts
of the world to empower people in self-
development.
She assists in healing people by
identifying the stress, which causes
psychological illness or physical illness.
Disease according to her is an adaptation
that the body undergoes to assist the person
to deal and adapt with the stressful
environment. Every disease begins with
some kind of trauma. After the onset of this
trauma the disease process sets in. In short
the body starts adapting. Symptoms may or
may not show.
One of the traumas that is unheard and
kept silent about is abuse. There are various
kinds of abuse – sexual, physical, verbal,
emotional, drug and stalking. Abuse can be
an intensely traumatic situation, which can
cause health concerns like Parkinson’s,
Infertility, Obsessive Compulsive disorder,
Depression, Bipolar behavior, problem in
sexual organs and ovarian cysts, bone issues
and many more.
Most of us do not even realize that we
are getting abused. We all grow from our
personal experiences. In the same way Anu
Mehta began her journey in this field of
from a situation of feeling vulnerable,
shame, and not being good enough to
feeling heard, loved and cared for. She broke
her silence on her abuse as a child, which in
turn helped her and many others like her to
feel empowered. She found enough
evidence to prove that abuse creates silence,
secrets, and hidden anger, sadness, guilt
and shame. This can then get transformed
into unhealthy behavioral patterns and
diseases,whichcanhauntmanygenerations
to come. Clearing abuse, restraining
emotions and beliefs and the trauma can
halt a number of diseases in their tracks
and create health and happiness. She urges
people to look within and deal with their
demons.
She always says “Don’t give up, just
give yourself permission to set yourself free
from the chains that are holding you down
and making you cry”. People are scared of
any kind of change or making any changes
in their lives yet they want others in their
life to change.
Healing combination of three “A”
pillars - Awareness, Acceptance and Action.
So take responsibility of self-healing today
and create an action plan to deal with
emotional wounds so that you can help
yourself to heal fast.
Anu believes in empowering people.
According to her real empowerment can
only happen when people look very deeply
into what needs to be changed in their life
andthengoaheadandmakethatCHANGE.
The only one person who can change your
destiny and make you feel empowered is
you, so go ahead and make that one change
today.

Hiroshima Bomb Radiation
and META-Health
O
n my visit to Japan, Hiroshima, I
felt mixed emotions of sadness;
grief, anger, and anxiety. I
pondered over my tour guide,
Miharu’s words, “on August 6th, 1945 at 8.15
am, an American B-29 bomber had carried
out the World’s first atomic bombing. On that
day 13 newborn babies died even before they
had time to cry. Over 100,000 people-men,
women, and children had perished and a
millions were injured and homeless". This sad
reality made me feel like a part of history as I
stood amidst the ruins of the A-bomb Dome,
where actual bombing had occurred. The
bomb had ripped apart life in that area of the
city. Result was death and agony. Survivors
faced disease.
Miharu further commented, So many
people had sustained heavy burns and their
skin had melted due to the heat and radiation
of the bomb. They had jumped into the salty
water of river Motoyasu as it is connected to
the sea. This irritated the wounded areas
further. Their face and bodies were burnt were
beyond recognition, and could not be
recognized.
I imagined myself in the victims’ shoes
and it donned on me that they have felt
abandoned, unprotected and separated from
loved ones and would have also experienced
the fear of survival. Could these conflicts be
responsible for acute and latter effects?
As a META-Health master trainer my
mind began to buzz because knowledge of
META-health could help me to identify the
impact of radiation, heat and emotional
trauma on mind body and spirit of survivors
of Hiroshima.
The impact of shock was greater near the
epicenter of the bomb. The symptoms or
injuries appearing soon after the bombing
derived from heat, blast or radiation are
known as acute effects.
Radiation from the bomb created
harmful effects on bone marrow and mucous
membranes viz hair loss, bleeding gums,
purpura, stomatitis, hemorrhagic tendencies,
Urinary tract cancer: unable to mark
ones territory.
Breast cancer-worry nest and brutal
separation conflict.
Esophagus cancer: unable to swallow
some information
Colon cancer: unable to get rid of shit
in life.
Stomach cancer unable to digest a
problem of big chunk of information or
anger.
Lung cancer: fear of death.
Leukemia: loss of ones identity.
Cataracts occurred due to the visual
brutal separation from loved ones which
caused life to be colorless and grey this
caused the clouding of the lens.
In- Vitro Exposure of the radiation
caused microcephaly or mental retardation
in the progeny. Could it be that some
surviving pregnant mothers saw no hope in
life and this impacted the unborn child?
The trauma and the aftermaths of the
bombing were heart breaking. Getting to
know of the cause of the trauma would
actually help the survivors and their future
generations to find a strategy to deal with
further presumed and actual attacks.
Spending millions of dollars on prevention
would be a better idea that the expenditure
on the rehabilitation of the victims.
reduced red and white blood cells and other
blood abnormalities. In severe cases
radiational effects had caused death.
Acute symptoms disappeared
approximately within five months but the side
effects like keloids, cataract, leukemia,
malignant tumors and in-vitro effects
appeared.
META-Health explains that body is
doing something meaningful to protect life.
Disease that manifested years was actually
part of regeneration process. This is explained
as follows:
Keloid is an irregular abnormal scar
tissue which occurs when the skin is healing.
During the trauma the survivors felt
unprotected and separated from loved ones.
The body grew extra skin in order to give
extra protection to the individual against
further trauma.
Cancers: Cancers began to increase in
Japan after 1960. Most cancers occur a few
years after a trauma i.e. almost when people
come to terms with something. According to
META-Health some of the cancers and their
conflicts of origin were:
Myeloma (tumor of bone marrow) due
to self-devaluation conflict;
Ovarian cancer: brutal separation from
loved ones.

Animal Activist & Rescuer
CHRISTINA LOBO
My earliest recollection of being with
animals was in Goa, during visits to India.
The pigs, dogs, cats, hens and goats at my
granny’s house just fascinate me. I grew up
in Kuwait where wild life is close to nil. My
empathy for animals came from watching
my dad who used to medicate and rescue
the desert dogs. They run for miles getting
tired and searching for food so he would
keep food and buckets of water for them
behind his company.
In 2004 after I met my husband we
headed to Lucknow, India. It was there, that
I saw the sorry state and suffering of road
side animals, helpless and without any aid.
Sandeep and I decided to something about
it.
We would go out patrolling the streets
at night to treat injured animals. I learnt the
hard way that it was not a done thing for
‘bahus’ in the north to run on the street
after injured animals. I had two choices –
worry about society or help a helpless
animal that was being eaten alive by worms.
Of course, you can guess what I chose. I
never looked back. In 2007 when we shifted
to Mumbai, I got into it full time. In 3 years,
with the help of IDA (In Defence of
Animals) Mumbai and the support of my
husband and other volunteers we managed
to get 450 dogs sterilized in the area where I
reside
I met new people who were also
actively involved in the cause for stray
animals and volunteers increased. In 2009,
a kind man saw me treating a dog outside
his dental clinic and donated a Maruthi 800
to me to use as an ambulance. We handed it
over to IDA, and they gave it back to us to
run in and around our area. A generous
garage owner got the back seats removed
and installed a grill to keep the animals
caged at the back and away from the driver,
on the way to the hospital.
People started noticing the work, and
many offered to help. Phone calls started
pouring in from store owners, auto drivers
and locals for help for injured animals
when they spotted them. Mumbai over the
years has opened up even more to the cause
of stray animals, yet so many suffer. Even
today, dogs are rescued from the clutches of
horrible owners. Many burnt, tortured,
starved and even raped. Dogs were even
rescued from porn sets in Mumbai. Elite
women who make videos like this.
In July of 2013 I got my first donation
of 2000 rs and started regular work on a
larger scale....We have till date managed to
rescue bout 600 animals and around 50
adopted
Sandeep and I rescued our epileptic
dog Kelly from the clutches of a drug addict
in 2008. She is the love of our lives. In
September of 2013 we adopted a paralysed
cat named Marie. She got well and just
started walking one fine day! She died a
few months later, in November. Her lungs
collapsed after a fall from the bed.
The very same month, We adopted our
3rd pet. He was 4 months old and was lying
half dead with severe pneumonia at the
train station. We named him after his late
sister Marie and called him Marvel. Kelly
and Marvel, our Desi dog and cat are just
wonderful!

Concepts like Married Womens

also the Employer-Employee Act, where by
the employer pays for its employees and
could claim on the premium as expenses

DARSHITA PATOLIA
The beauty of a language cannot be
explained in words! One has to experience
this beautiful journey of learning a new
language to experience it.
My journey with languages started
when I shifted to Mumbai from Gujarat at
the age of 5. The first day I went to school I
realised I couldn't talk to anyone as I did
not speak Hindi. This fear of mine was one
of the main reasons of my aloofness for
almost 6 months. But with my parents by
my side to encourage me, I decided I'll ace
every language I come across so much that
no one will be able to guess my mother - tongue from my accent! This way in school
ImasteredmyEnglish,HindiandMarathon
and at home I mastered my mother - tongue
Gujarati. Post that I opted for French as the
next language and today I hold a BA in
French Literature and will shortly be
holding an MA for the same.
As for learning languages, I personally
believe everyone should learn a foreign
language and from a young age if possible.
Languages not only opens new fields of
professions for you but it also helps you
develop a good personality: studying new
culture and adopting the positives from
each one of them moulds a person's
personality. In my case, I am a food blogger
and a writer, and the credit for both of it
goes to my love for languages. The blog
which goes by the name of DesiTadka has
been designed to preserve the old recipes
and make the new recipes unique with a
desire touch!
Women of excellence are my
motivation in every field I choose because
being unique is what they encourage me to
do!! And I am glad that I am born a
WOMAN!!

Consultant Homeopath
Prof. & Head of Pharmacy Dept.
Homeopathic Medical College
DR PRABHA ACHARYA
Life is a roller coaster ride they say, and
I have experienced all its ups and downs.
Looking back I can now start to understand
the arduous and enriching journey it has
been.
Born into a lower middle class family,
little did I know what an arduous but
enriching journey it would be! Born with a
rare disease Ontogenesis Imperfecta, I was a
lame child who was forbidden the fruits of
life. I remember sitting at the window
shouting out to other children ` Come play
with me.` This scene changed my life and I
went on take upon the world with a heart of
steel. Barely had I settled at a tender age of
6, my brother was born with the same
disease but worse. I home educated him and
as a young girl of 13 I fought with the
education system and got my brother
retained at school without attendance with
the challenge of a distinction when he
reaches SSC and he did.
Being too timid without great talent I
gave my best shot to academics studying
homeopathy with LIC loans and parental
support. Not wanting to burden them
further, I walked 6 kms daily to save on
travel to buy books, but this hardship
strengthened my bones. Blessed with good
looks I modeled for few ads to take away Rs
500/-. But when I found myself drawn, I
gave it all up to pursue my studies. It was
the best phase of my life where the lame,
timid child in me grew to be confident to
stand the world. It was here that I met the
love of my life and a different journey
begun. I got married into a very orthodox
family which followed Indian custom of
`Ghungat` where females never worked.
But with responsibility of a handicap
brother, a near blind mother, a long retired
father- marriage was a decision I could take
coz my husband stood by me..
As if the toughest journey was still to
come and it fell like a thunderbolt. My
daughter was born with Ontogenesis
Imperfecta and my world came crashing. I
took up the challenge once again and home
educated her along with my career and
responsibilities. I refused post of Principal
to the medical college with no regrets.
Looking back at life now nearing 50, it’s
been 26 years of a very successful career
being Professor and Head of Pharmacy
Department and treating patients with
homeopathy from across 20+ states in India
and 60+ countries across the globe.
Life offered me a palette of challenges.
I used it to paint a dynamic picture. I pride
myself for being a woman of substance.

India based celebrity hairstylist from Mumbai, also known for her
contribution to the field of fashion, writing, photography,
entertainment and reality television.
SAPNA BHAVNANI
Notoriously spanning the spectrum of
media, hair, fashion, writing, photography,
music, entertainment and reality television,
Sapna Bhavnani is a public voice and
personality to reckon with. As a pioneer
entrepreneur, she founded the funky
celebrity hair salon mad-o-wot 12 years ago
in Bombay. Through her versatile avatars
such as the outspoken appearance on reality
TV show Bigg Boss, writing a bitingly
intimate weekly column for Mumbai Mirror
and Mid Day, authoring a self-help book for
teenage girls "style o wot" to launching the
avant-garde clothing line SoFake, Sapna has
naturally assumed poster-child status as a
powerful female figure. She traverses
mainstream success with just as much ease
as she skirts the underground youth art &
culture movement. Ageless, fearless and
forevermetamorphosisinginherendeavors,
Sapna has recently begun giving her
celebrity-hood the voice of an activist-- she
produced One Billion Rising at Carter Road
(2013), acted in award-winning play
Nirbhaya, was one of the 8 women
documented in "Scattered Windows,
Connected Doors" which has won the
audience choice award at the Mumbai
Women's International film festival and
won the best documentary at the Vancouver
international Asian film festival, and
directed political music videos for Anna
Hazare's "Ambar Tak" sung by Kailash
Kher. She recently adopted an entire village
called "Palegaon" in Maharashtra and set up
a kindergarten for the kids as well as a
woman's center by raising funds online. She
also set up a woman's center in the village of
"Jawahar." She is a spokesperson for PETA,
Fight Back and Operation Black Dot. She is
also the Co-Founder of Stop Acid Attacks
(2013) (which won "CNN IBN Indian of
the Year" award (2013) and NDTV Indian
of the Year Award (2014) amongst many
others.) In November 2015, Sapna won
“The Digital Woman’s Award” for “Social
Impact” and was one of the 8 woman
entrepreneurs chosen to meet the Prime
Minister Mr. Modi at the launch of his
initiative #StartUpIndia in Delhi. Inspired
by the initiative she returned back to
Mumbai and started Pathshala ‘school of
life’, literally, where less privileged (for the
lack of a better word) women are
empowered to harness a new skill. Teaming
up with AAWC (Apne Aap Women’s
Collective); an NGO that is an anti-
trafficking organization that serves the
women and children of Kamathipura, the
red light area of Mumbai that is also one of
the largest and oldest red light areas in Asia;
for the first batch, she recruited 5 ex-sex
workers to train as professional Hair
Stylists. Sapna rented a small space in
Bandra and once again got funded by one
community reached out and in no time, she
managed to create the best academy to date
in India. Just this month Sapna was awarded
the “IBelieve” award by Savvy Magazine for
her with Pathshala. The rest, like they say, is
herstory.
Actor, spoken word artist, writer,
director, producer- Sapna embodies it all as
a visionary and change-maker. No matter
how many times she evicts herself, the
public always votes her back in!

Pankaja Munde said to 'India's Wellness
Ambassador Rekha Chaudhari “Promoting
healthy lifestyles for our employees, and
woman all over MAharstra is extremely
important and aligns well with this
initiative.”
Few organization is ready to take rally
cry of “Wellness for everyone”
Robert Redford in «The Legend of
bagger Vance» unveiled the fact that every
stroke is about finding a way for a perfect
shot to express itself. Selecting the
appropriate club to cover the distance,
adjusting to the terrain with the right
posture, getting a firm grip, letting go of
unnecessary tensions in the body & jaw,
softening the knees. Breathing long and slow
as the body pivots, raising the club. Feeling
that sweet moment when time stands still
allowing for the movement to invert, with
the swing of the pendulum, coming back
square on the ball, following through and
facing towards the flag, with one’s heart fully
open.Usually, the confirmation of an
effortless & perfect shot comes with the
clear sound that the ball makes as it soars
through the air. That moment is worth all
the hours on the driving range & the putting
green. In the vein of “Wellness for Everyone”,
that moment is accessible to all, if only you
set yourself in motion to explore how your
body works & how you can find your swing
both on the course, and in life.It is a
relentless invitation to find one’s pace
through life, one’s swing, clearing one’s mind
from its chatter, energizing the body with
enhanced flexibility & muscle tone, while
strengthening & pacifying one’s heart, with
reduced stress and anxiety.
With health being the true wealth, what
if, on June 11 2016, Global Wellness Day
helped you realize that trying out golf
,dance, walk ,gym etc for the first time, or
dusting off your old set of clubs or gym
equipment , could help you close the best

as precious artistic works because of their
graceful and delicate calligraphy.
Calligraphy is defined as the art of
beautiful writing adhering to aesthetics and
grace. Not only does it have great aesthetic
value, but also powerful energy signatures
and frequency that it translates into homes,
as each writing carries erudite sayings,
prayers periodicals and deeds.
‘Mo’alla’ is the latest achievement in the
art of calligraphy in Iranian society, after
‘Shekasteh Nas'taliq’ writing was invented
about 150 years ago. Mo’alla (The Exalted)
Calligraphy has been innovated by Hamid
Ajami whom the Artist acknowledges as his
master or teacher. Mo’alla calligraphy is
based on the calligrapher’s own subjective
and imaginative interpretation of various
traditional calligraphic styles, resulting in
the emerging of a new visual style.
Thisuniquecollectionhasbeenadorned
with Tazhib (gilding) - an Arabic word which
has been derived from “zahab” meaning
“gold”. Gilding involves drawing beautiful
patterns. At the beginning, golden color was
used in this art and this is why they called it
“tazhib” (gilding). Over a period of time,
other colors like azure, blue, green, vermilion
and turquoise have also been used along
with gold.
Kaveh Afraie is a talented Calligrapher,
Photographer & Graphic Designer. He has
trained under the adept hands of Master
Hamid Ajami (who is The Innovator of
MOALLA Calligraphy) for a decade & won
several awards. He has an innate love for
India and has travelled extensively within
our country.
The masterpiece of the Artist in this
collection is the BIRD OF BISMILLAH.
Kaveh Afraei had a dream & was shown a lot
of words which culminated into what
seemed like the form of a bird. The Master
communicated in this sacred space - ‘You do
not create these things, but they appear’. That
is what happened. All words scrambled
together and suddenly a special shape of a
bird appeared explicitly and clearly. The
artist could then perceive the Master’s words.
What resulted is this unique, exquisite
artwork - ‘Bird of Bismillah’ which has a total
of 2000 letters of the name of God woven
together ornately.
The artist expresses, ”I would like to say
We Are ONE. I think this is the Art of Artist,
who wins the hearts of the audience with his
works. One powerful energy has created the
world, It is not important for me what is the
name of that God. All calligraphy is soul art.
There are many people from all backgrounds
who will come to see this special exhibition.
It is the art of Arts, it requires no translation
- you can translate this with your own self.
Praising the Lord in any ornate form and in
any language is beautiful and does not need
an interpreter.”
“Our mutual vision is to spread love
and beauty through art. We truly dissolve all
borders when we express ourselves through
this wonderful medium of art,” says Jalpa H
Vithalani, Creative Head & Director, Cosmic
Heart Gallery, who has curated this show.
WORLD WITHOUT BORDERS

collection of art that will touch your soul.
They are committed to bringing beautiful
gifts from the world of sound and art into
peoples’ lives, to enable them connect to the

Heart Gallery has put together an exquisite
collection of ‘MO’ALLA (The Exalted)
CALLIGRAPHY’, all the way from Iran, by
world renowned Artist Kaveh Afraie in
collaboration with the Culture House of
I.R. of Iran, Mumbai. This show was
inaugurated by Masood Khaleghi, Consul
General of Iran, Bollywood Actress, Gracy
Singh and Media Personality, Dolly
Thakore.
“We are happy to support these creative
endeavors and this is our third exhibition
with Cosmic Heart Gallery,” says Mr. Mahdi
Zare, Director, Culture House of the I.R. of
IRAN, Mumbai.
The art of calligraphy is one of the
reputable and famous arts in Iran. The
importance of the art of calligraphy among
Iranian arts is such that some arts seem to
be incomplete, without decorative
calligraphy to enrich & beautify them. Most
of the handwritten books of Iran specially
the Holy Quran and collections of poems
such as Shahnameh, Hafez, Golestan,
Boostan and Khayam have been recognized

A HOLIDAY - TO JUST BE !
H
ave you been on a vacation ?
Of course, you have. What a
silly question. So tell me-
where did you go for your
vacation? A new city ? To the country side
? Or to a different continent altogether?
Vacations are exciting. New places to see,
new people to meet. And lots o things to
do that we are not able to do in the
humdrum of our daily life. We too have
had the such trips where we packed in
loads of exciting activities . We have had a
lot of fun on those trips and ironically a lot
of stress too . The stress of having to DO so
many things within a limited number of
vacation days. The stress of stretching the
dollar to fit in as many collectibles (
including memories ) as possible . The
stress of having to show back home what a
happening, worthwhile trip it was and to
be able to tell others about the things we
saw and DID. In short a very tangible trip.
Everything about the trip was outwardly .
It was all about DOING things when on a
holiday.
Don’t get me wrong , am not against
these trips . But just sometimes it feels nice
to take a real break from it all . Something
like taking a journey inwards. So this
vacation, we decided to take a trip that was
different . A holiday to connect with
ourselves and get closer to our loved ones
without DOING anything. We wanted this
trip to be about Just BEING in the here and
now. Something that would bring us inner
joy , peace and happiness. Not stress and
anxiety. We thought why not take a holiday
which could be for us a real break from the
regular frantic pace of making a living and
have some time for ourselves to have a
chance to living our life ?
So here I was sitting in the restaurant
of this countryside resort , for an early
morning breakfast while my girls were still
in their cozy beds. Sipping my cuppa tea , I
noticed how rushed everyone was to have
their plates filled in with food. How eager
they were to finish their breakfast. How
frantically they planned the outing for the
day , though I dare say , there wasn’t
anything much to go sight seeing in this
small countryside. I observed the frenzy of
activities with great amusement as this
group of holiday makers tried to make the
most of this holiday by DOING everything
they thought they were supposed to DO on
a holiday . And I wondered , wasn’t life back
home in the city too , full of DOING things
that needed to be done?
The resort we were living in was a
haven of a place. With lush greenery around
, it looked like a garden in paradise. There
were fountains making gurgling sounds.
There were hammocks and swings for
relaxing and lounging under the trees.
Forest birds chirped from amongst thick
foliage on high branches. There were royal
wrought iron chairs and tea tables in the
garden, so that guests could enjoy a hot
cuppa tea on cold mornings in the lap of
nature. And am sure most of us booked into
this resort because it looked so peaceful and
had that country charm. Something that we
don’t get to enjoy in the hustle bustle of our
city life. But once everyone had settled into
their rooms , out of sheer habit of DOING
things around, people perhaps felt fraught
to DO things around this place too , in
order to enjoy the holiday . After all what
are they going to tell the people back home
in the city about how much and how they
enjoyed on this vacation trip ? It would be
such a shame if they could not tell others
what they DID over at the holiday place.
So when my nephew back home asked
me , as to how was our holiday , I told him
that we are just relaxing here at the resort.
Savoring the good food. Sleeping in
hammocks and listening to the birds
singing somewhere in the tall trees . Sipping
masala chai at leisure in the garden and
enjoying the cool breeze lilting through the
fountains nearby. And generally chit
chatting with each other about nothing in
particular. Sometimes in the early mornings
or sunset evenings, when we feel like it , we
go for a short walk or a long drive along the
deserted roads. We play with the dog,
feeling happy that she has an open ground
to play around . It’s a pleasure to just watch
the puppy go bounding across the gravel
path and chase butterflies. And how lovely it
is to lounge by the swimming pool , watch
my girls taking laps in the cool blue waters
and write about things that matter to me .
Also how rewarding it is to just BE and
listen to my inner voice. And when I look up
at the expanse of the sky full of soft fluffy
clouds, , I feel so blessed , peaceful and
happy.
Having heard my account of our
countryside sojourn, all my nephew had to
ask me was – So you didn’t DO any sight-
seeing ? So you didn’t DO any shopping ? So
what ‘s the use of spending so much money
to travel so far ?
Seeing him so aghast, all I could DO
was SIGH and say - Yes ! We did not DO
anything this vacation because for us this
holiday was not about DOING anything. It
was about BEING . Just BEING happy –
Inside Out !

e are more and more shocked
each day by the number and,
more so, even by the kind of
rape cases coming to light.
The score is speedily on the rise. Not even the
compassionate, kind and harmless nuns are
being spared. Our country mourns. Lots of
voices raise, all kinds of judgments are passed
by the common people and politicians, blames
go around, a few candles lit, several tears shed,
anguish almost everywhere, bleeding hearts
and lo, there is another crippling episode.
Do we all really know what rape is all
about ? Is it sex or gratification ??? NO !!! It's a
control issue ! Yes, control issue, the seeds of
which lie in chauvinism. It's a sickness.
Definitely not a dirty mind but a turmoiled
mind that needs help and therapy.
Now let's see where this chauvinism
germinates from ... How does the control issue
build.Adaughterisborn,ohmy,whatashame.
A boy is birthed and there comes the status
symbol.
Afewyearslater,parentstelltheirson,but
boys don't cry !
Ononehandtheboy'semotionsarebeing
suppressed, he is being blocked and on the
other hand, he is being taught that he is too
superior to the girls who cry.
Crying,infact,notonlywouldbecathartic
but also allow him to express himself. On the
contrary, this pressure continues to build
withinalongtheyearsinsomanywaystocause
much more havoc within turning him weak,
insecure and now he would want to suppress
another person by controlling her and deriving
the thrill of feeling stronger and superior !
An educated and 45 plus years old close
friend from an effluent class recently shared
that his 6-7 years old son broke a plate out of
anger and stubbornness even while being told
not to do it for which he gave him a tight slap. I
felt that both of them were outraged and
destructive. The son broke the plate, whereas,
his father broke his heart and this was much
more damaging. I asked, "Would you have
instead liked to sit down with him after a short
while put your arm around him and looking
straight into his eyes ask "why did you want to
break it ? Has something hurt you, my baby ?
What made you so angry ?" and he gave me a
firm "NO ! Jyotika, children need to be
punished." So either he was really as confident
ofwhathehaddoneevendayslaterorprobably,
the guilt hadn't set in by then or his ego
prevented him from accepting his fault.
Not only the little boy is seen being
controlled in this case, he is even being taught
how to control tomorrow !
As a child, my aunts and uncles made a
game for us 7, 8 and 9 years olds. A group of 6
or so cousins. The game was who could hit the
other the most ! The complaint against me
always was that although I clenched my jaws
andpretendedtolookferocious,myfistswould
barely even touch the boys. However, the boys
learnt to take full advantage and left us almost
mutilated. Then everyone would clap for the
boys and tell them how strong and superior
they were and how well they could hold a grip
on us helpless girls !!!!!
Why didn't they want to game it in a
manner that we got to experience who would
hug the other most meaningfully ? Or better
still,whowouldgivethemostthoughtfulgiftto
theother?Iamsuretheboyswouldgolooking
for the most colorful Croton leaf, a fragrant
Tube Rose or a velvety pink Mussaenda flower
like leaves and the girls would make them their
favourite strawberry jam sandwiches or sketch
them their favourite cartoon ! I know that one
boy would still bully one of us to paint his
canvas shoes white !!!
The Vedas teach us to always respect
women, to give them the importance and
status of a High Priestess. However,
unfortunately and in complete contrast with
this, girls and women have been suppressed in
Indiaforseveraldecades.Wehaveallknownof
our ladies in parda or the ghungat (not the
burqabeingHindus)withtheirmouthszipped,
ears taped, eyes and nose shut, choked throats
and a permanently lost voice. They never had a
sayinthefamily.Theyweretrainedtoonlynod
in agreement always. They worked from early
morning until late night mechanically without
any complaint. They were like free maids or
rather slaves. And the slave drivers weren't just
men but also the women: mother-in-law and
sisters-in-law in a stereotypical joint family
scenario. They were the ones who, in fact,
complained and shouted .... and we are
discussing families of the upper class here !
The point I tried to make here is that men
are not to be blamed alone for suppressing and
controlling women.
Let's take another example .... One that
most of us will be able to relate with - a pratha
(norm) that still exists. It's the mothers who
traintheirsonsjustbeforetheirgettingmarried
to have a tight grip over their wives and these

  • 6. 4 • B E - May 2016 Master trainer of a diagnostics tool -META-Health. Trainer in Information technology called NES-health and Advanced Clearing Energetics in India today anu.metamedicine@gmail.com || 9930898116 ANU MEHTA Anu Mehta is the only Master trainer of a diagnostics tool called META-Health, and a trainer in Information technology called NES-health in India today. She also trains people in various emotion releasing techniques. She is an international speaker and also host’s speakers from various parts of the world to empower people in self- development. She assists in healing people by identifying the stress, which causes psychological illness or physical illness. Disease according to her is an adaptation that the body undergoes to assist the person to deal and adapt with the stressful environment. Every disease begins with some kind of trauma. After the onset of this trauma the disease process sets in. In short the body starts adapting. Symptoms may or may not show. One of the traumas that is unheard and kept silent about is abuse. There are various kinds of abuse – sexual, physical, verbal, emotional, drug and stalking. Abuse can be an intensely traumatic situation, which can cause health concerns like Parkinson’s, Infertility, Obsessive Compulsive disorder, Depression, Bipolar behavior, problem in sexual organs and ovarian cysts, bone issues and many more. Most of us do not even realize that we are getting abused. We all grow from our personal experiences. In the same way Anu Mehta began her journey in this field of from a situation of feeling vulnerable, shame, and not being good enough to feeling heard, loved and cared for. She broke her silence on her abuse as a child, which in turn helped her and many others like her to feel empowered. She found enough evidence to prove that abuse creates silence, secrets, and hidden anger, sadness, guilt and shame. This can then get transformed into unhealthy behavioral patterns and diseases, whichcanhauntmanygenerations to come. Clearing abuse, restraining emotions and beliefs and the trauma can halt a number of diseases in their tracks and create health and happiness. She urges people to look within and deal with their demons. She always says “Don’t give up, just give yourself permission to set yourself free from the chains that are holding you down and making you cry”. People are scared of any kind of change or making any changes in their lives yet they want others in their life to change. Healing combination of three “A” pillars - Awareness, Acceptance and Action. So take responsibility of self-healing today and create an action plan to deal with emotional wounds so that you can help yourself to heal fast. Anu believes in empowering people. According to her real empowerment can only happen when people look very deeply into what needs to be changed in their life andthengoaheadandmakethatCHANGE. The only one person who can change your destiny and make you feel empowered is you, so go ahead and make that one change today. • 7. 5 • B E - May 2016 Hiroshima Bomb Radiation and META-Health O n my visit to Japan, Hiroshima, I felt mixed emotions of sadness; grief, anger, and anxiety. I pondered over my tour guide, Miharu’s words, “on August 6th, 1945 at 8.15 am, an American B-29 bomber had carried out the World’s first atomic bombing. On that day 13 newborn babies died even before they had time to cry. Over 100,000 people-men, women, and children had perished and a millions were injured and homeless". This sad reality made me feel like a part of history as I stood amidst the ruins of the A-bomb Dome, where actual bombing had occurred. The bomb had ripped apart life in that area of the city. Result was death and agony. Survivors faced disease. Miharu further commented, So many people had sustained heavy burns and their skin had melted due to the heat and radiation of the bomb. They had jumped into the salty water of river Motoyasu as it is connected to the sea. This irritated the wounded areas further. Their face and bodies were burnt were beyond recognition, and could not be recognized. I imagined myself in the victims’ shoes and it donned on me that they have felt abandoned, unprotected and separated from loved ones and would have also experienced the fear of survival. Could these conflicts be responsible for acute and latter effects? As a META-Health master trainer my mind began to buzz because knowledge of META-health could help me to identify the impact of radiation, heat and emotional trauma on mind body and spirit of survivors of Hiroshima. The impact of shock was greater near the epicenter of the bomb. The symptoms or injuries appearing soon after the bombing derived from heat, blast or radiation are known as acute effects. Radiation from the bomb created harmful effects on bone marrow and mucous membranes viz hair loss, bleeding gums, purpura, stomatitis, hemorrhagic tendencies, Urinary tract cancer: unable to mark ones territory. Breast cancer-worry nest and brutal separation conflict. Esophagus cancer: unable to swallow some information Colon cancer: unable to get rid of shit in life. Stomach cancer unable to digest a problem of big chunk of information or anger. Lung cancer: fear of death. Leukemia: loss of ones identity. Cataracts occurred due to the visual brutal separation from loved ones which caused life to be colorless and grey this caused the clouding of the lens. In- Vitro Exposure of the radiation caused microcephaly or mental retardation in the progeny. Could it be that some surviving pregnant mothers saw no hope in life and this impacted the unborn child? The trauma and the aftermaths of the bombing were heart breaking. Getting to know of the cause of the trauma would actually help the survivors and their future generations to find a strategy to deal with further presumed and actual attacks. Spending millions of dollars on prevention would be a better idea that the expenditure on the rehabilitation of the victims. reduced red and white blood cells and other blood abnormalities. In severe cases radiational effects had caused death. Acute symptoms disappeared approximately within five months but the side effects like keloids, cataract, leukemia, malignant tumors and in-vitro effects appeared. META-Health explains that body is doing something meaningful to protect life. Disease that manifested years was actually part of regeneration process. This is explained as follows: Keloid is an irregular abnormal scar tissue which occurs when the skin is healing. During the trauma the survivors felt unprotected and separated from loved ones. The body grew extra skin in order to give extra protection to the individual against further trauma. Cancers: Cancers began to increase in Japan after 1960. Most cancers occur a few years after a trauma i.e. almost when people come to terms with something. According to META-Health some of the cancers and their conflicts of origin were: Myeloma (tumor of bone marrow) due to self-devaluation conflict; Ovarian cancer: brutal separation from loved ones.
  • 8. 6 • B E - May 2016 Animal Activist & Rescuer CHRISTINA LOBO My earliest recollection of being with animals was in Goa, during visits to India. The pigs, dogs, cats, hens and goats at my granny’s house just fascinate me. I grew up in Kuwait where wild life is close to nil. My empathy for animals came from watching my dad who used to medicate and rescue the desert dogs. They run for miles getting tired and searching for food so he would keep food and buckets of water for them behind his company. In 2004 after I met my husband we headed to Lucknow, India. It was there, that I saw the sorry state and suffering of road side animals, helpless and without any aid. Sandeep and I decided to something about it. We would go out patrolling the streets at night to treat injured animals. I learnt the hard way that it was not a done thing for ‘bahus’ in the north to run on the street after injured animals. I had two choices – worry about society or help a helpless animal that was being eaten alive by worms. Of course, you can guess what I chose. I never looked back. In 2007 when we shifted to Mumbai, I got into it full time. In 3 years, with the help of IDA (In Defence of Animals) Mumbai and the support of my husband and other volunteers we managed to get 450 dogs sterilized in the area where I reside I met new people who were also actively involved in the cause for stray animals and volunteers increased. In 2009, a kind man saw me treating a dog outside his dental clinic and donated a Maruthi 800 to me to use as an ambulance. We handed it over to IDA, and they gave it back to us to run in and around our area. A generous garage owner got the back seats removed and installed a grill to keep the animals caged at the back and away from the driver, on the way to the hospital. People started noticing the work, and many offered to help. Phone calls started pouring in from store owners, auto drivers and locals for help for injured animals when they spotted them. Mumbai over the years has opened up even more to the cause of stray animals, yet so many suffer. Even today, dogs are rescued from the clutches of horrible owners. Many burnt, tortured, starved and even raped. Dogs were even rescued from porn sets in Mumbai. Elite women who make videos like this. In July of 2013 I got my first donation of 2000 rs and started regular work on a larger scale....We have till date managed to rescue bout 600 animals and around 50 adopted Sandeep and I rescued our epileptic dog Kelly from the clutches of a drug addict in 2008. She is the love of our lives. In September of 2013 we adopted a paralysed cat named Marie. She got well and just started walking one fine day! She died a few months later, in November. Her lungs collapsed after a fall from the bed. The very same month, We adopted our 3rd pet. He was 4 months old and was lying half dead with severe pneumonia at the train station. We named him after his late sister Marie and called him Marvel. Kelly and Marvel, our Desi dog and cat are just wonderful! christinalobo07@gmail.com || 9833843424

  • 14. 12 • B E - May 2016 DARSHITA PATOLIA The beauty of a language cannot be explained in words! One has to experience this beautiful journey of learning a new language to experience it. My journey with languages started when I shifted to Mumbai from Gujarat at the age of 5. The first day I went to school I realised I couldn't talk to anyone as I did not speak Hindi. This fear of mine was one of the main reasons of my aloofness for almost 6 months. But with my parents by my side to encourage me, I decided I'll ace every language I come across so much that no one will be able to guess my mother - tongue from my accent! This way in school ImasteredmyEnglish,HindiandMarathon and at home I mastered my mother - tongue Gujarati. Post that I opted for French as the next language and today I hold a BA in French Literature and will shortly be holding an MA for the same. As for learning languages, I personally believe everyone should learn a foreign language and from a young age if possible. Languages not only opens new fields of professions for you but it also helps you develop a good personality: studying new culture and adopting the positives from each one of them moulds a person's personality. In my case, I am a food blogger and a writer, and the credit for both of it goes to my love for languages. The blog which goes by the name of DesiTadka has been designed to preserve the old recipes and make the new recipes unique with a desire touch! Women of excellence are my motivation in every field I choose because being unique is what they encourage me to do!! And I am glad that I am born a WOMAN!! • 15. 13 • B E - May 2016 Consultant Homeopath Prof. & Head of Pharmacy Dept. Homeopathic Medical College DR PRABHA ACHARYA Life is a roller coaster ride they say, and I have experienced all its ups and downs. Looking back I can now start to understand the arduous and enriching journey it has been. Born into a lower middle class family, little did I know what an arduous but enriching journey it would be! Born with a rare disease Ontogenesis Imperfecta, I was a lame child who was forbidden the fruits of life. I remember sitting at the window shouting out to other children ` Come play with me.` This scene changed my life and I went on take upon the world with a heart of steel. Barely had I settled at a tender age of 6, my brother was born with the same disease but worse. I home educated him and as a young girl of 13 I fought with the education system and got my brother retained at school without attendance with the challenge of a distinction when he reaches SSC and he did. Being too timid without great talent I gave my best shot to academics studying homeopathy with LIC loans and parental support. Not wanting to burden them further, I walked 6 kms daily to save on travel to buy books, but this hardship strengthened my bones. Blessed with good looks I modeled for few ads to take away Rs 500/-. But when I found myself drawn, I gave it all up to pursue my studies. It was the best phase of my life where the lame, timid child in me grew to be confident to stand the world. It was here that I met the love of my life and a different journey begun. I got married into a very orthodox family which followed Indian custom of `Ghungat` where females never worked. But with responsibility of a handicap brother, a near blind mother, a long retired father- marriage was a decision I could take coz my husband stood by me.. As if the toughest journey was still to come and it fell like a thunderbolt. My daughter was born with Ontogenesis Imperfecta and my world came crashing. I took up the challenge once again and home educated her along with my career and responsibilities. I refused post of Principal to the medical college with no regrets. Looking back at life now nearing 50, it’s been 26 years of a very successful career being Professor and Head of Pharmacy Department and treating patients with homeopathy from across 20+ states in India and 60+ countries across the globe. Life offered me a palette of challenges. I used it to paint a dynamic picture. I pride myself for being a woman of substance. drprabhaacharya@yahoo.com || + 91 9167000152

  • 19. 17 • B E - May 2016 India based celebrity hairstylist from Mumbai, also known for her contribution to the field of fashion, writing, photography, entertainment and reality television. SAPNA BHAVNANI Notoriously spanning the spectrum of media, hair, fashion, writing, photography, music, entertainment and reality television, Sapna Bhavnani is a public voice and personality to reckon with. As a pioneer entrepreneur, she founded the funky celebrity hair salon mad-o-wot 12 years ago in Bombay. Through her versatile avatars such as the outspoken appearance on reality TV show Bigg Boss, writing a bitingly intimate weekly column for Mumbai Mirror and Mid Day, authoring a self-help book for teenage girls "style o wot" to launching the avant-garde clothing line SoFake, Sapna has naturally assumed poster-child status as a powerful female figure. She traverses mainstream success with just as much ease as she skirts the underground youth art & culture movement. Ageless, fearless and forevermetamorphosisinginherendeavors, Sapna has recently begun giving her celebrity-hood the voice of an activist-- she produced One Billion Rising at Carter Road (2013), acted in award-winning play Nirbhaya, was one of the 8 women documented in "Scattered Windows, Connected Doors" which has won the audience choice award at the Mumbai Women's International film festival and won the best documentary at the Vancouver international Asian film festival, and directed political music videos for Anna Hazare's "Ambar Tak" sung by Kailash Kher. She recently adopted an entire village called "Palegaon" in Maharashtra and set up a kindergarten for the kids as well as a woman's center by raising funds online. She also set up a woman's center in the village of "Jawahar." She is a spokesperson for PETA, Fight Back and Operation Black Dot. She is also the Co-Founder of Stop Acid Attacks (2013) (which won "CNN IBN Indian of the Year" award (2013) and NDTV Indian of the Year Award (2014) amongst many others.) In November 2015, Sapna won “The Digital Woman’s Award” for “Social Impact” and was one of the 8 woman entrepreneurs chosen to meet the Prime Minister Mr. Modi at the launch of his initiative #StartUpIndia in Delhi. Inspired by the initiative she returned back to Mumbai and started Pathshala ‘school of life’, literally, where less privileged (for the lack of a better word) women are empowered to harness a new skill. Teaming up with AAWC (Apne Aap Women’s Collective); an NGO that is an anti- trafficking organization that serves the women and children of Kamathipura, the red light area of Mumbai that is also one of the largest and oldest red light areas in Asia; for the first batch, she recruited 5 ex-sex workers to train as professional Hair Stylists. Sapna rented a small space in Bandra and once again got funded by one post on FaceBook. The hairstyling community reached out and in no time, she managed to create the best academy to date in India. Just this month Sapna was awarded the “IBelieve” award by Savvy Magazine for her with Pathshala. The rest, like they say, is herstory. Actor, spoken word artist, writer, director, producer- Sapna embodies it all as a visionary and change-maker. • 25. 23 • B E - May 2016 as precious artistic works because of their graceful and delicate calligraphy. Calligraphy is defined as the art of beautiful writing adhering to aesthetics and grace. Not only does it have great aesthetic value, but also powerful energy signatures and frequency that it translates into homes, as each writing carries erudite sayings, prayers periodicals and deeds. ‘Mo’alla’ is the latest achievement in the art of calligraphy in Iranian society, after ‘Shekasteh Nas'taliq’ writing was invented about 150 years ago. Mo’alla (The Exalted) Calligraphy has been innovated by Hamid Ajami whom the Artist acknowledges as his master or teacher. Mo’alla calligraphy is based on the calligrapher’s own subjective and imaginative interpretation of various traditional calligraphic styles, resulting in the emerging of a new visual style. Thisuniquecollectionhasbeenadorned with Tazhib (gilding) - an Arabic word which has been derived from “zahab” meaning “gold”. Gilding involves drawing beautiful patterns. At the beginning, golden color was used in this art and this is why they called it “tazhib” (gilding). Over a period of time, other colors like azure, blue, green, vermilion and turquoise have also been used along with gold. Kaveh Afraie is a talented Calligrapher, Photographer & Graphic Designer. He has trained under the adept hands of Master Hamid Ajami (who is The Innovator of MOALLA Calligraphy) for a decade & won several awards. He has an innate love for India and has travelled extensively within our country. The masterpiece of the Artist in this collection is the BIRD OF BISMILLAH. Kaveh Afraei had a dream & was shown a lot of words which culminated into what seemed like the form of a bird. The Master communicated in this sacred space - ‘You do not create these things, but they appear’. That is what happened. All words scrambled together and suddenly a special shape of a bird appeared explicitly and clearly. The artist could then perceive the Master’s words. What resulted is this unique, exquisite artwork - ‘Bird of Bismillah’ which has a total of 2000 letters of the name of God woven together ornately. The artist expresses, ”I would like to say We Are ONE. I think this is the Art of Artist, who wins the hearts of the audience with his works. One powerful energy has created the world, It is not important for me what is the name of that God. All calligraphy is soul art. There are many people from all backgrounds who will come to see this special exhibition. It is the art of Arts, it requires no translation - you can translate this with your own self. Praising the Lord in any ornate form and in any language is beautiful and does not need an interpreter.” “Our mutual vision is to spread love and beauty through art. We truly dissolve all borders when we express ourselves through this wonderful medium of art,” says Jalpa H Vithalani, Creative Head & Director, Cosmic Heart Gallery, who has curated this show. WORLD WITHOUT BORDERS Mo'alla Calligraphy from Persia by Artist Kaveh Afraie Cosmic Heart Gallery is an art space with a difference which offers an exquisite collection of art that will touch your soul. They are committed to bringing beautiful gifts from the world of sound and art into peoples’ lives, to enable them connect to the Divine. In the latest exhibition, Cosmic Heart Gallery has put together an exquisite collection of ‘MO’ALLA (The Exalted) CALLIGRAPHY’, all the way from Iran, by world renowned Artist Kaveh Afraie in collaboration with the Culture House of I.R. of Iran, Mumbai. This show was inaugurated by Masood Khaleghi, Consul General of Iran, Bollywood Actress, Gracy Singh and Media Personality, Dolly Thakore. “We are happy to support these creative endeavors and this is our third exhibition with Cosmic Heart Gallery,” says Mr. Mahdi Zare, Director, Culture House of the I.R. of IRAN, Mumbai. The art of calligraphy is one of the reputable and famous arts in Iran. The importance of the art of calligraphy among Iranian arts is such that some arts seem to be incomplete, without decorative calligraphy to enrich & beautify them. Most of the handwritten books of Iran specially the Holy Quran and collections of poems such as Shahnameh, Hafez, Golestan, Boostan and Khayam have been recognized

We have had a lot of fun on those trips and ironically a lot of stress too . The stress of having to DO so many things within a limited number of vacation days. The stress of stretching the dollar to fit in as many collectibles ( including memories ) as possible . The stress of having to show back home what a happening, worthwhile trip it was and to be able to tell others about the things we saw and DID. In short a very tangible trip. Everything about the trip was outwardly . It was all about DOING things when on a holiday. Don’t get me wrong , am not against these trips . But just sometimes it feels nice to take a real break from it all . Something like taking a journey inwards. So this vacation, we decided to take a trip that was different . A holiday to connect with ourselves and get closer to our loved ones without DOING anything. We wanted this trip to be about Just BEING in the here and now. Something that would bring us inner joy , peace and happiness. Not stress and anxiety. We thought why not take a holiday which could be for us a real break from the regular frantic pace of making a living and have some time for ourselves to have a chance to living our life ? So here I was sitting in the restaurant of this countryside resort , for an early morning breakfast while my girls were still in their cozy beds. Sipping my cuppa tea , I noticed how rushed everyone was to have their plates filled in with food. How eager they were to finish their breakfast. How frantically they planned the outing for the day , though I dare say , there wasn’t anything much to go sight seeing in this small countryside. I observed the frenzy of activities with great amusement as this group of holiday makers tried to make the most of this holiday by DOING everything they thought they were supposed to DO on a holiday . And I wondered , wasn’t life back home in the city too , full of DOING things that needed to be done? The resort we were living in was a haven of a place. With lush greenery around , it looked like a garden in paradise. There were fountains making gurgling sounds. There were hammocks and swings for relaxing and lounging under the trees. Forest birds chirped from amongst thick foliage on high branches. There were royal wrought iron chairs and tea tables in the garden, so that guests could enjoy a hot cuppa tea on cold mornings in the lap of nature. And am sure most of us booked into this resort because it looked so peaceful and had that country charm. Something that we don’t get to enjoy in the hustle bustle of our city life. But once everyone had settled into their rooms , out of sheer habit of DOING things around, people perhaps felt fraught to DO things around this place too , in order to enjoy the holiday . After all what are they going to tell the people back home in the city about how much and how they enjoyed on this vacation trip ? It would be such a shame if they could not tell others what they DID over at the holiday place. So when my nephew back home asked me , as to how was our holiday , I told him that we are just relaxing here at the resort. Savoring the good food. Sleeping in hammocks and listening to the birds singing somewhere in the tall trees . Sipping masala chai at leisure in the garden and enjoying the cool breeze lilting through the fountains nearby. And generally chit chatting with each other about nothing in particular. Sometimes in the early mornings or sunset evenings, when we feel like it , we go for a short walk or a long drive along the deserted roads. We play with the dog, feeling happy that she has an open ground to play around . It’s a pleasure to just watch the puppy go bounding across the gravel path and chase butterflies. And how lovely it is to lounge by the swimming pool , watch my girls taking laps in the cool blue waters and write about things that matter to me . Also how rewarding it is to just BE and listen to my inner voice. And when I look up at the expanse of the sky full of soft fluffy clouds, , I feel so blessed , peaceful and happy. Having heard my account of our countryside sojourn, all my nephew had to ask me was – So you didn’t DO any sight- seeing ? So you didn’t DO any shopping ? So what ‘s the use of spending so much money to travel so far ? Seeing him so aghast, all I could DO was SIGH and say - Yes ! We did not DO anything this vacation because for us this holiday was not about DOING anything. It was about BEING . Just BEING happy – Inside Out ! • 32. 30 • B E - May 2016 W e are more and more shocked each day by the number and, more so, even by the kind of rape cases coming to light. The score is speedily on the rise. Not even the compassionate, kind and harmless nuns are being spared. Our country mourns. Lots of voices raise, all kinds of judgments are passed by the common people and politicians, blames go around, a few candles lit, several tears shed, anguish almost everywhere, bleeding hearts and lo, there is another crippling episode. Do we all really know what rape is all about ? Is it sex or gratification ??? NO !!! It's a control issue ! Yes, control issue, the seeds of which lie in chauvinism. It's a sickness. Definitely not a dirty mind but a turmoiled mind that needs help and therapy. Now let's see where this chauvinism germinates from ... How does the control issue build.Adaughterisborn,ohmy,whatashame. A boy is birthed and there comes the status symbol. Afewyearslater, parentstelltheirson, but boys don't cry ! Ononehandtheboy'semotionsarebeing suppressed, he is being blocked and on the other hand, he is being taught that he is too superior to the girls who cry. Crying, infact, notonlywouldbecathartic but also allow him to express himself. On the contrary, this pressure continues to build withinalongtheyearsinsomanywaystocause much more havoc within turning him weak, insecure and now he would want to suppress another person by controlling her and deriving the thrill of feeling stronger and superior ! An educated and 45 plus years old close friend from an effluent class recently shared that his 6-7 years old son broke a plate out of anger and stubbornness even while being told not to do it for which he gave him a tight slap. I felt that both of them were outraged and destructive. The son broke the plate, whereas, his father broke his heart and this was much more damaging. I asked, "Would you have instead liked to sit down with him after a short while put your arm around him and looking straight into his eyes ask "why did you want to break it ? Has something hurt you, my baby ? What made you so angry ?" and he gave me a firm "NO ! Jyotika, children need to be punished." So either he was really as confident ofwhathehaddoneevendayslaterorprobably, the guilt hadn't set in by then or his ego prevented him from accepting his fault. Not only the little boy is seen being controlled in this case, he is even being taught how to control tomorrow ! As a child, my aunts and uncles made a game for us 7, 8 and 9 years olds. A group of 6 or so cousins. The game was who could hit the other the most ! The complaint against me always was that although I clenched my jaws andpretendedtolookferocious, myfistswould barely even touch the boys. However, the boys learnt to take full advantage and left us almost mutilated. Then everyone would clap for the boys and tell them how strong and superior they were and how well they could hold a grip on us helpless girls !!!!! Why didn't they want to game it in a manner that we got to experience who would hug the other most meaningfully ? Or better still, whowouldgivethemostthoughtfulgiftto theother?Iamsuretheboyswouldgolooking for the most colorful Croton leaf, a fragrant Tube Rose or a velvety pink Mussaenda flower like leaves and the girls would make them their favourite strawberry jam sandwiches or sketch them their favourite cartoon ! I know that one boy would still bully one of us to paint his canvas shoes white !!! The Vedas teach us to always respect women, to give them the importance and status of a High Priestess. However, unfortunately and in complete contrast with this, girls and women have been suppressed in Indiaforseveraldecades.Wehaveallknownof our ladies in parda or the ghungat (not the burqabeingHindus)withtheirmouthszipped, ears taped, eyes and nose shut, choked throats and a permanently lost voice. They were like free maids or rather slaves. And the slave drivers weren't just men but also the women: mother-in-law and sisters-in-law in a stereotypical joint family scenario. They were the ones who, in fact, complained and shouted .... and we are discussing families of the upper class here ! The point I tried to make here is that men are not to be blamed alone for suppressing and controlling women. Let's take another example .... One that most of us will be able to relate with - a pratha (norm) that still exists.
