We tell our teens to surround themselves with true friends who promote positivity and healthy self-
esteem. Shouldn't we practice what we preach? Spring is here, and it's the perfect time for taking
emotional stock and ridding ourselves of winter's cobwebs.
The greatest gains we can achieve in the next 10 years in public mental health will derive from
closing the gap between what we know and what we do in both mental health and the addictions.
Many of the widows sought medical attention from a general health care provider for a plethora of
reasons. While some providers are adept and highly sensitive, others clearly lack some appropriate
bedside manners.
As I talked about how I felt about psychosis, my anxiety lessened. I could breathe. My chest wasn't
tight. My body was less tense. I stopped crying. Things started to come back into focus. I was still
obviously shaken, but things weren't as threatening.
I believe that I am beginning to heal from past hurts and that I am moving towards a path where I
can allow new relationships to form and existing ones to grow in a healthy way. I hope that in the
future more people will come to know the hurt that exists in the world outside of the medical
diagnosis. And health I hope that others with mental illness speak out.
The truth is, though, you have to let go of everything you were in order to become who you will be.
